Indulging in a glass of wine when flying might seem like a nice travel luxury to help you relax and fall asleep, but research suggests it may do more harm than good. According to a recent study, the lower oxygen and air pressure levels in an airplane cabin combined with alcohol consumption can negatively impact your sleep, blood oxygen saturation, and heart rate.1

What the Research Says

The study involved two groups of healthy people who spent two nights sleeping for four hours in either a sleep laboratory or an altitude chamber designed to mimic the airplane cabin environment. One night was alcohol-free, while the other involved the equivalent of two glasses of wine or cans of beer.

The combination of alcohol consumption and low oxygen concentration at high altitudes led to an increased heart rate and less oxygen in the blood. The researchers noted that not only were sleep quality and cardiovascular health poorly affected, but it also increased the length of hypoxemia, a serious health condition characterized by low oxygen levels in the blood.

Also, participants who drank spent less time in REM sleep compared to those who didn’t. REM sleep is the fourth and final stage of a sleep cycle, and it’s important for brain development, emotional processing, and memory consolidation.2

What Medical Experts Say

We spoke with Chester Wu, MD, a double-board-certified doctor in Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine, who explained, “Alcohol can significantly impair sleep quality and lead to persistent sleep issues. It impacts sleep in several ways, particularly affecting REM and deep sleep.”

Dr. Wu added “Consuming an amount of alcohol equivalent to about two standard drinks before sleep (targeting a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 mg/L) disrupts sleep architecture by significantly decreasing REM sleep. According to a study, participants who consumed alcohol over three consecutive nights experienced increased slow wave sleep (SWS) accumulation but reduced REM sleep accumulation at the start of each night, resulting in an overall decrease in total REM sleep.”3

Tips for Sleeping Better on a Plane

The upside is that you have plenty of other ways to help you sleep better when traveling. These are some of our top recommendations to help make napping on planes easier.

1. Dress in Layers

Temperature swings are common on long-haul flights, so it’s best to wear light layers of clothes you can easily remove or add on as needed. The more comfortable you are, the easier it will be to sleep. Packing a pair of socks or a small blanket in your carry-on could help too when temps go down.

2. Turn Off Your Tech Devices

That in-flight movie might seem like a good idea, but if your goal is to sleep, it might be best to wait until after your nap to watch one. According to Harvard Health, screen devices emit a blue light that suppresses melatonin production, which can leave you feeling more alert rather than sleepy.4

3. Wear an Eye Mask

Wearing an eye mask is an easy way to block out light. This is especially true for daytime flights, though even if you fly overnight, an eye mask will help if the person seated next to you has their reading light on. Make sure you’re using a light-blocking eye mask specifically, and we recommend one that’s soothing against the eyes for added comfort, such as satin.

4. Try a Travel Pillow

A travel pillow is a compact pillow to use while traveling. You can choose from many designs ranging in size, material, and shape. If you’ve spent time in airports, you’ve probably noticed those U-shaped pillows, which are a common travel pillow design that’s easy to carry around. These can help with neck support so you don’t strain anything, especially if you’re not seated next to the window.

5. Wear Noise-Canceling Headphones

Whether it’s the jet engine or people talking, airplanes are loud. Bringing along some noise-canceling headphones or earbuds can help make the environment quieter and more suitable for sleep.

6. Avoid Caffeine

Many of us love coffee, but the caffeine in it can make you feel wide awake. If you’re going on a flight, it’s best to avoid caffeinated beverages like coffee or soda if you plan to sleep. Water is the best substitute if you’re thirsty because it will help you stay hydrated.

Conclusion

If your goal is to get in a good nap on your next flight, skipping that alcoholic beverage could be your best bet. Add on some helpful accessories like a travel pillow and eye mask, and you’ve got an ideal recipe for a relaxing in-flight snooze.

That said, sleeping on a plane isn’t the easiest thing in the world, so don’t stress too much if you can’t get some shut-eye. The good news is that you can still look forward to sleeping in your cozy hotel bed after you land.

Excellent Matches For the Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress

  • Folks seeking a customized bed – The Custom bed allows you to choose which firmness, comfort materials, and cover fabric you want. This allows for ultimate personalization. Shoppers who purchase a King or Cali-King can choose to split the comfort level of their bed.
  • Hybrid fans – A combination of foam and springs can provide the advantages of both materials, such as the comfort and body conformance of foam with the airflow and bounce of coils.
  • Hot sleepers – The breathable cover choices and airflow through the individually pocketed springs in this mattress should help you keep the bed temperature neutral while you sleep and ensure you don’t wake up sweaty.

Possible Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress Considerations:

  • Not available in smaller sizes – The Custom offers a lot of great options, but sizing is limited. The bed is only available in a Queen, King, or California King.
  • It won’t have an all-foam feel – A hybrid mattress is a fusion of foam and coil systems. That being said, some shoppers prefer an all-foam bed and may need time to get used to the feel of coils. The good news is you have up to 120 nights under the trial period to decide whether this hybrid bed is for you.

Construction: What’s Inside the Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress?

The standard cover of the Custom is made with organic cotton. Cotton is an excellent material because it’s highly breathable. Furthermore, the cotton in this cover is sustainably sourced.

In total, the medium-firm Custom stands at 13 inches high.

  • Below the cover are two 2-inch layers of comfort foam. Customers can choose among Titanflex, Luxe Memory Foam, or Latex for their comfort layer.
  • The next layer is a 2-inch transitional foam that should help ease you into the coils further below.
  • The innerspring unit is made up of 1,024 individually encased Ascension® coils and stands 8 inches thick. This layer serves as the primary support mechanism of the Custom and should help deliver motion isolation as well.
  • The base of this mattress is a 1-inch high-density foam. This layer gives the bed durability and reinforces the Ascension® coils as they compress.

First Impression: How Does It Feel?

The Custom is compressed and shipped in a box to your home. The company recommends waiting 3-5 hours for the mattress to expand before lying on it.

When you lie down, you’ll feel the soft comfort of the cotton cover combined with your personalized comfort foam that holds your body in a gentle hug. The responsive foams should not cling to your shape or make you feel stuck, but since the bounce is deeper, rolling over might be an issue for those who struggle with mobility.

Firmness Scale: Customizable

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Pressure Relief

As you lie down, your weight will begin to put pressure on some parts of the body. Unfortunately, these areas can become sensitive to pressure and may cause discomfort or pain. These pressure points, as they’re referred to, can help find relief through a well-made mattress that incorporates pressure relieving features.

The advantage of the Custom is that you can choose your desired comfort foam based on your pressure relief needs and preferences. For example, those who prefer some more responsiveness may choose the latex comfort layer, or folks who want even more pressure relief and motion isolation may opt for the Luxe memory foam.

Support

A supportive mattress is also important because it helps keep your spine in proper alignment. When the spine becomes maligned, this can lead to problems with back or neck pain.

The Custom’s support system is comprised of an innerspring unit with 8-inch individually encased Ascension® coils. The advantage of pocketed coils is that they react independently, allowing them to contour to your body to provide the necessary support where you need it most.

In addition to these coils, the bottom of the Custom contains a 1-inch highly-dense foam base. This base aids in bed support by reinforcing the coils as they compress while providing a durable foundation.

Preference-based Features

Multiple Options

This bed comes with three 2 inches of personalized comfort foam that includes Latex, Luxe Memory Foam, or Titanflex. Customers can choose between a soft, medium, and firm feel. Lastly, you can customize your cover by choosing the standard cotton or selecting the Luxury Cooling or Recovery fabrics for an additional 100 dollars.

EuroTop

This mattress features a zippered Eurotop cover that’s designed to foster airflow and keep the bed cool.

Cooling

In addition to a breathable cotton over, this bed features coils further below, which should deliver even more airflow. For advanced cooling, you can pay 100 more for the Luxury Cooling or Recovery cover.

Exceptional Edge Support

Mattresses designed to compress into smaller boxes show some slight changes in support on the far edges, and this hybrid performs as we expect from this industry. You are free to lie down on the side of the bed as you normally would without feeling any significant change to the support system, but you might notice some compression when seated on the very edge with all of your weight concentrated on one spot.

Motion Isolation

The foams in this mattress, though responsive, do a great job of capturing vibration at its source and preventing most of it from moving across the bed and the pocketed coil unit also cuts down on motion transfer. You may feel a slight bit of disturbance when your partner gets in and out of bed, but this choice performs excellently for a hybrid and should not rattle you awake.

Adjustable Base Compatible

The Custom is compatible with an adjustable base.

Overall Summary

Brooklyn Bedding’s answer to the demand for personalization has yielded Custom, a versatile hybrid that you can adjust to fit your specific needs and preferences.

Side Sleeping Icon

Side Sleep

4/5

Most side sleepers should feel comfortable lying on their side, but they should be mindful of excess pressure that can build up under the hips and shoulders in this position. If you tend to feel extra pressure in this area, the softer configuration may suit your needs better.

Back Sleeping Icon

Back Sleep

4/5

Most back sleepers should like how the comfort foam conforms to their shape and create a well-supported and low-pressure sleeping environment. Tastes in this category do tend to vary, and some exclusive back sleepers may prefer the firmer setting.

Stomach Sleeping Icon

Stomach Sleepers

4/5

Stomach sleepers often are best suited by firmer mattresses so that their heavier midsections do not sink too low and affect good spine alignment. Occasional tummy sleepers or those who are lighter than average might prefer the Medium, but many may gravitate towards the Firm.

Combination Sleeping Icon

Combination Sleepers

5/5

A medium-firm setting adapts well to different positions, which is a particular advantage to combination sleepers who do not commit to one sleep style. The personalization of the Custom is a strong advantage for combination sleepers, making this an excellent choice for these consumers.

Couples Icon

Couples

4/5

The bed’s multiple firmness options and comfort choices allow you and your partner to create a bed that caters to both of you. Another benefit of the Custom is that you can choose to split the comfort if you order a King or Cali-King size.

Heavy Sleepers Icon

Heavy Sleepers

3/5

Individuals who weigh substantially more typically prefer a firmer bed to support them well. Some heavier folks may enjoy the Firm setting on the Custom. However, those who weigh over 300 pounds should consider the company’s Titan mattress, which is specially designed for larger frames.

Light Weight Sleepers

Light-Weight Sleepers

4/5

Lightweight sleepers, who usually go for plush beds, will appreciate the Eurotop and likely gravitate towards the softer setting, especially if they weigh under 120 pounds. However, lightweight stomach or back sleepers may decide to incorporate the medium foam for something a bit more supportive.

Overall Value

4/5

Rather than deciding between different models, the Brooklyn Bedding Custom offers multiple ways to personalize your mattress by being a part of the building process when you make your order.

You get to decide how your mattress feels in at least four ways, ensuring that you’re getting a bedding product that’s more tailored to you than ever before.

If you have back pain, you know that it can disrupt your daily activities as well as your nightly sleep. Your doctor should always be your first stop when you’re experiencing these symptoms—but your mattress may be a bigger part of the problem than you realize.

“Your mattress can either make your back pain worse or help ease it,” said Dr. Raj Dasgupta, a quadruple board-certified physician and Sleep Advisor Chief Medical Officer. According to him, there are multiple aspects to look for in a new bed if you’re seeking relief for an achy back.

My colleagues and I chose the best mattresses for back pain based on these factors, as well as the different kinds of back pain you might experience. Having tested these mattresses in person, we can speak directly to how they supported and pampered our spines.

What’s the Best Mattress for Back Pain?

The Helix Midnight tops this list because of how well it balances support, pressure relief, and a medium-firm feel. Our testers gave it 5 out of 5 stars for the first two categories, and remarked that it aligned their spines without sacrificing a pleasant cushiony feeling from the upper foam layers.

Advice from a Medical Expert

“To ease back pain, go for a mattress that keeps your spine aligned (medium-firm to firm usually does the trick). If it’s too soft, your spine might sink too much, putting extra strain on your lower back. But if it’s firm enough to keep your spine aligned, it can actually reduce pressure and discomfort.”

– Dr. Raj Dasgupta

What We Want to See in a Mattress for Back Pain

Support for Spinal Alignment

Perhaps the most important thing we want to see in a bed for back pain is support. Consistent, even support leads to neutral spinal alignment—that is, your spine being arranged in a relatively straight line, with no odd dips or unnatural curves.

Because support is so crucial to combating back pain, we weighted it very heavily for this roundup. Every mattress on the list below received a perfect 5 out of 5 rating from the testing team in this category.

Medium-Firm to Firm Feel

As Dr. Raj mentioned above, a medium-firm to firm mattress is best for someone with back pain. If your mattress is too plush, you risk your spine sinking out of alignment.

His advice is supported by a 2021 review of 39 articles and studies, which concluded that medium-firm beds both improved sleep quality for people with lower back pain and reduced the risk of low back pain developing.1

Therefore, all of the beds we chose for this list have a firmness score of at least 5 out of 10 (which is the softer side of medium-firm), and most are firmer than that.

Enough Pressure Relief for Comfort

Of course, if a mattress is only firm and supportive, you might as well be sleeping on a big brick. When your back is in pain, you want some degree of cushioning so that your sleep space feels cozy. Without pressure relief, you might even exacerbate existing pain as pressure builds up around stressed areas.

All of the beds on this list received at least a 4 out of 5 from our testers in the pressure relief category. Some feel softer than others, so whether you enjoy a buoyant, bouncy bed or you want to be cradled by pillowy foams, you’ll find options below.

Why It’s Great for Back Pain

A closer look at the Helix Midnight mattress construction
A look inside the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight tops this list because it delivers support and pressure relief in near-perfect harmony. The testing team awarded it perfect 5 out of 5 scores in both of these categories, noting that the bed kept their spines aligned on their backs and sides in particular. Our pressure map test also showed blue and green across the board, signaling no problem areas where pressure might build up.

Combine these stats with an ideal medium firmness level (6 out of 10 on our scale), and you’ve got a bed that feels like it’s made to fight back pain.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“Testers’ spines appeared to be straight from the base of the neck to the tailbone. When lying on our backs, we felt aligned … There is definitely a sense of overall support.”

Loren Bullock, Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Feature

Helix Responsive Foam. There are two layers of the brand’s proprietary responsive foam inside this bed, and we think they make a big difference when it comes to addressing back pain.

Rather than sinking in slowly, like memory foam, these layers compress and bounce back fast. They provide a medium-firm feel, and were designed to encourage body alignment along with the innerspring unit underneath them.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight has over 6,500 reviews on Helix’s website, scoring at 4.5 out of 5. Some negative reviews mention feeling a dip in the middle of the bed when it’s shared with a partner. But overall, most users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep along with some pain relief.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Versatility – Loren described this bed as “not too soft, not too firm,” and it’s this middle-of-the-road feel that makes it a safe choice for many different types of sleepers.
Awesome motion isolation – Surprisingly, testers gave the Midnight another perfect score for its motion isolation. It cancels out movement very well for a hybrid bed.
Cons
Poor edge support – Loren and other testers felt like they were sliding off the bed while lying on the sides.
Stomach sleepers need more support – If you sleep on your stomach, this bed is probably too soft for you. Your hips will sink in and disrupt your spinal alignment.

Why It’s a Great Firm Mattress for Back Pain

Emma Hybrid Comfort layers
The layers inside the Emma Hybrid Comfort

This hybrid reliably supports a variety of body types where other mattresses might sag, resisting the dips and sinkage that cause back pain. During testing, the firm surface distributed my body weight evenly and kept my spine lifted.

The mattress accomplishes this feat by stacking three thin foam layers above a sturdy coil unit, and by splitting that coil unit into seven zones for specialized support.

Our Favorite Feature

Innerspring Unit with Seven Zones. The Hybrid Comfort’s coil unit consists of pocketed springs that are strong enough to buoy both stomach sleepers and plus-size people.

It’s also zoned into seven areas that provide varying levels of pushback to different parts of the body, so you feel more bolstered where you need more support—especially under the low back and hips.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“You get a good responsive feel from the coils, but not a whole lot of sink on a surface level. This is really appealing for those who need solid back support because of the good weight distribution and spine alignment the bed offers.”

Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Customer Reviews of the Emma Hybrid Comfort

This is a fairly new mattress, so Emma’s site doesn’t have many reviews yet. Early customers already rate it at 4.5 out of 5 stars from a little over 70 reviews. So far customers appreciate the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress for its bracing firmness. Looking at the few negative reviews, some people have reported that it’s slightly too firm for them, or that there were delivery issues.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Surprising pressure relief – Considering how firm this bed is, we were wowed by its favorable pressure map results and gave it a 4 out of 5 in that category.
Affordability – The Emma Hybrid Comfort is priced lower than most other hybrids, and sales often reduce the cost to less than $1,000 for a queen.
Cons
Noisy foam – Rolling around on this bed during testing, I could hear one of the foam layers crackling, almost like styrofoam.
Not for side sleepers – A 7 out of 10 firmness rating isn’t what you want to see if you’re a side sleeper. You’ll need more cradling for your shoulders and hips.

Why It’s Great for Upper Back Pain

The layers of the Saatva RX mattress
The foam-capped springs inside the Saatva Rx

The Saatva Rx was built specifically to combat both back and joint pain. Its design places more emphasis on pressure relief than some of the other beds on this list, so we think it’s especially suited to sleepers who feel sore in the upper portion of their backs.

Moreso than the lower spine, which typically needs lots of lift and firmness, the upper back and shoulders need some cushioning between them and a bed’s support system. We loved how this bed zeroed in our sensitive spots, cradling our upper bodies while keeping our spines straight and aligned.

Our Favorite Feature

Rx Foam Modules™. Every single spring inside the Saatva Rx is wearing its own “hat”: a foam module that stands 2 inches tall. Because the coils are topped with these individual pieces of foam, no matter where you lie on the bed, you feel simultaneously cushioned and lifted. All of our testers loved this aspect.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“The height, at first glance, insinuates a lot of cushiony layers. But turns out, it’s housing all those sturdy, wide pocketed coils. It feels squishy, supportive, and not too firm at all.”

Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Rx

Customers on Saatva’s website have awarded the Saatva Rx 4.8 out of 5 stars on average. The bed has around 50 reviews, praising the bed for helping with chronic back and neck pain, with only a few mentioning drawbacks such as lackluster edges.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Supports the low back, too – Like most Saatva mattresses, the Rx also has dedicated lumbar support features, including firmer micro-coils beneath the low back.
Responds instantly – This bed got a perfect score in the bounce category as well. It’s easy to move around on if you change positions often.
Cons
Doesn’t isolate motion – More bounce unfortunately means you’ll be able to feel more movement from across the bed.
Expensive – Before sales, a queen-size Saatva Rx costs more than $3,000.

Why It’s Great for Couples with Back Pain

Mattresses that help with back pain often sacrifice motion isolation in their pursuit of a supportive, springy profile. But not the Nectar Hybrid—this bed preserves the motion-absorbing skills of its predecessor (the all-foam Nectar mattress) while adding coils.

The result is a bed that can still address back pain while allowing couples to sleep soundly. Thanks to how it dampens motion, “you could sleep through an earthquake on this thing,” said Stuart, who tested the bed.

Our Favorite Feature

Infinity innerspring coils. The springs are what give the Nectar Hybrid most of its spine-aligning properties. In fact, we chose this model over pricier Nectar Hybrids because it has fewer foam layers between the top and the innerspring unit, upping its support score (and your chances of relief from back pain).

The coils also shore up the edges of the bed quite nicely, earning it a 5 out of 5 in the edge support category. This is another big plus for couples who want to stretch out during the night without feeling like they might slide off the sides.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“I felt decently cradled on the top of the bed without feeling like I was sinking or becoming too stuck … This mattress does a really great job melting to my pressure points around my shoulders, and my hips, and my lower back.”

Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Customer Reviews of the Nectar Hybrid

On Nectar’s website, this mattress scored a 4.5 out of 5 stars, from over 2,000 reviews. The Nectar Hybrid mattress is favored by customers for its affordability and pressure relief. On the flip side, some customers complained about the off-gassing odors upon unboxing.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Foam fans rejoice – Nectar is known for its cradling foams, and this hybrid will likely give you more of a “hug” than other choices on this list.
Great policies – A year-long sleep trial and lifetime warranty pair well with the Nectar Hybrid’s affordable price.
Cons
Not super responsive – You should be able to reposition on this bed, but it may take just a bit of effort.
Can be a little too firm – For lightweight people and side sleepers, this bed will feel more like a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which might be too hard for comfort.

Why It’s Great for Middle Back Pain

WinkBed interior
The WinkBed’s internal layers

If your pain is located in the middle of your back, a mattress that distributes your weight evenly is essential. Otherwise, a buildup of pressure can occur in a localized area and worsen or even spread the pain.

Across the board, our testers praised the WinkBed for how it kept them lifted and level. Its zoned support system provides the right amount of cushioning or resistance beneath different areas, and its responsiveness makes it “one of the best mattresses for combo sleepers,” according to Loren.

Our Favorite Feature

Zoned innerspring unit. During testing, we felt like the zones of the WinkBed’s coil unit did a fantastic job of keeping us aligned in different positions. No matter which way we turned, we were buoyed in all the right places. These coils also give the mattress a “luxury hotel bed” feel, said Loren.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“I scored the WinkBed high in pain relief. The pressure-relieving foams and zoned support work to keep your body weight evenly distributed, and the built-in lumbar support helps to prevent back pain.”

Loren Bullock, Lead Product Tester

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed has over 8,500 reviews and a score of 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Multiple firmness options – The WinkBed has more firmness options than most mattresses on the market; four, to be exact. There’s Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus (for heavier folks).
Strong edges – “Those reinforced edges really do pay off,” Loren said.
Cons
Motion travels – Our testers could easily feel movements across the surface of the WinkBed, so it may not be a good fit for very restless sleepers.
Not much cradling – The WinkBed has a distinctly hybrid feel, so it won’t please people who want a deep hug from foam layers.

Why It’s a Great Soft Mattress for Back Pain

You typically don’t want a mattress that’s too soft if you’re dealing with back pain. But the Nolah Evolution Comfort+ is a rare breed of bed: it has a lovely amount of plushness to its upper layers, followed by a super-supportive and zoned coil unit.

My fellow testers and I were surprised to feel this much softness coupled with enough lift for our lower backs and midsections. Though the bed was designed for heavier people, I’m pretty sure it’ll work for just about anyone.

Our Favorite Feature

Cooling AirFoam™ HD. Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam™ allegedly cools better, lasts longer, and relieves more pressure than traditional memory foams. What’s more, the “HD” version of this material inside the Evolution Comfort+ is even denser than the AirFoam™ in other Nolah beds, an adjustment geared toward spine alignment and support.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It’s a very inviting, soft sleep surface that doesn’t nix support. I feel plenty of lift around my midsection in any position I flip to, which is pretty unheard of for softer mattresses.”

Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution Comfort+

The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Nolah’s website. Some customers have mentioned how the Comfort+ gives them some cradling while remaining supportive, with several people praising this bed for alleviating their back pain.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
It’s for almost everyone – Regardless of your body type and preferred sleeping position, you’ll probably feel pretty comfortable and aligned.
Enough lift for the hips – As a dedicated stomach sleeper, I was kind of shocked (in a good way!) by the support I felt around my hips and lumbar spine in this bed.
Cons
Softness means sink – Even though the bed should keep your spine aligned, you’ll sink a bit into the upper layers of the Evolution Comfort+, and that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Not very cool – We gave this bed a 3 out of 5 in the cooling category. Its predecessor, the Nolah Evolution, has more temperature-regulating features.

Why It’s Great for Lower Back Pain

Bear Elite Hybrid mattress construction
A cutaway view of the Bear Elite Hybrid

All three of the testers who interacted with this bed pointed out how well it treated their lower backs. I thought the lift for my lower back was great, and I’m an average-weight sleeper who typically lies on her stomach.

Spencer agreed, commenting that he felt well-lifted across all positions—a rarity for plus-sized folks. Loren, our resident lightweight tester, was of the same opinion, saying she was pleased that there was “no excess sinking or sagging.”

Our Favorite Feature

Higher gauge coils in the lumbar zone. The innerspring unit inside the Bear Elite Hybrid is split into zones. The zone beneath the lumbar spine is full of coils with a higher gauge, grouped more tightly together. The net effect is that this region receives more of the pushback and support it needs to prevent lower back pain.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“There was full-body support, but also cushioning. There were no gaps between the mattress and my low back, which is rare for me.”

According to Bear’s website, where the Bear Elite has over 3,700 reviews, the mattress scores 4.6 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Cooling stands out – With phase change material, copper, and airflow around its springs, this bed is built to keep sleepers cool.
You won’t get stuck – The responsiveness of the bed means that it assists with your movements, rather than working against them. “Roll around to your heart’s content,” Loren advised.
Cons
Pressure around the shoulders – Side sleepers and lightweight people may experience some pressure buildup around the shoulders on this mattress and firmness level.
Doesn’t cancel out movement – A consummate hybrid, this mattress has lots of bounce and won’t absorb the feeling of motion very well.

Why It’s a Great Affordable Mattress for Back Pain

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid construction
The foams and springs inside the Signature Hybrid

Finding the right mattress for your back-pain woes shouldn’t mean straining your budget as well. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is an affordable bed—often priced around $1,000 when discounts are in effect—with the right ingredients for back pain relief. It has a strong support system, pressure-relieving foams, and lots of bounce for quick repositioning.

Our testers experienced “perfectly straight” spinal alignment when lying on this bed, adding that its structure made them feel lifted and lightweight.

Our Favorite Feature

Supreme Response Comfort Foam. This upper foam layer helps with the bed’s superior responsiveness, which one tester called “insane.” Having a bed that assists with movement (instead of making you feel stuck in its layers) can be a big advantage as you find the most comfortable sleeping positions for your back pain.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It feels wonderful [while I’m on my back]. The cushion around my hips is pushing back ever so slightly with this buoyant feel.”

Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has over 10,000 reviews and a score of 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
High degree of bounce – We gave this mattress a 5 out of 5 in the bounce category, and loved how responsive it was while still feeling soft at the surface.
Stays cool – There’s a decent amount of airflow around the springs in this hybrid. Our temperature testing resulted in a grade of 4 out of 5 for this category.
Cons
Not great for couples – Both the edge support and the motion isolation on this bed are lacking. Sharing it with a light sleeper may not work out.
Too soft for stomach sleeping – At a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, the medium version of this bed is almost too soft for this roundup. We recommend going firmer if you snooze on your belly.

Why It’s Great for Heavy People with Back Pain

Titan Plus construction image
A peek inside the Titan Plus

Plus-size sleepers need many of the same qualities from a mattress as someone with back pain. Even, reliable support is most important—dips and sagging can spell lots of discomfort. So, if you have a larger frame as well as back problems, you’ll want to consider this factor first and foremost.

Luckily, the Titan Plus was designed to comfortably support up to 1,000 pounds, and its firm feel caters to heavier people. Our heavyweight tester, Spencer, was very taken with this bed, calling it “very, very comfortable.” The lightweight and average-weight testers agreed that it provided “great lift and full-body support.”

Our Favorite Feature

TitanCore Coils. Taking up 8 inches of the bed’s height, these coils are the key player in its ability to support up to 1,000 pounds. Brooklyn Bedding says that they design the innerspring units in-house with an emphasis on strength and durability.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“My lower back especially is supported, and I’m not feeling any sinkage. I may be taking this bed home, it’s so comfortable.”

Spencer, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. There are over 2,500 reviews where most customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Pressure relief is there, too – Spencer’s pressure maps read exclusively blue and green, a good sign that the foams at the top are preventing pressure from building up in any one area.
Surprisingly cool – This bed received a perfect score in the cooling category. “The mattress doesn’t even feel warm from my body heat when I get up and lie back down,” said one tester.
Cons
Not very versatile – The lightweight and average-weight testers, Loren and I, felt supported by this bed but didn’t find its firmness level very cozy. It’s designed primarily for heavier folks.
Won’t hug you – This bed’s priority is providing support, so you won’t feel a slow-sinking embrace from its foams.

How We Chose the Best Mattresses for Back Pain

My fellow mattress testers and I spend our days assessing beds in person at Sleep Advisor’s studio. We grade them on a variety of general performance factors, but for this roundup, we paid special attention to the criteria that matter most for soothing sore backs.

As an average-weight stomach sleeper, I can only speak to how a mattress felt for my body type. So, I test beds alongside petite and plus-sized folks, too.

We also reached out to Dr. Raj Dasgupta, a physician and sleep medicine expert who helped us clarify how exactly a mattress can address (and potentially relieve) back pain.

What to Look For in a Mattress for Back Pain

A lot of things go into a quality mattress, and the best mattresses for back pain have even more particular features to consider. Below, we’ve outlined the most important factors when you’re looking for a bed to alleviate your back pain.

Support & Pressure Relief

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid lightweight back sleeper testing
Loren tests the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid’s support

A good mattress for back pain will balance both pressure relief and support in a soothing combination. You don’t want to sink too far into your mattress, yet you need cradling around sensitive areas like the hips and shoulders (especially if you prefer to sleep on your side, as these areas experience a lot of pressure buildup).

This combination also works to ensure that your spine remains in the proper alignment. A misaligned spine is a common cause of back pain, especially in the lumbar area.  It can also exacerbate pre-existing back issues, whether they’re acute or chronic.²

What Does an Aligned Spine Look Like?

When aligned, your spine should be relatively straight, regardless of your sleeping position. You’ll need a bed that doesn’t allow you to sink too far or feel too unyielding. Otherwise, it will put undue stress on your back.

The degree of alignment is mostly determined by the bed’s support unit, which can be made up of coils, foam, or even latex. We recommend hybrid models for the best balance of pressure relief and support.

How do we test for pressure relief and support?

When we say a mattress relieves pressure, we aren’t just sharing a personal opinion. We actually use a pressure map to record where pressure is building up. Everything is color-coded: red means more pressure, and blue means less.

For support, it’s a little less technical. We have all of our testers lay on the bed on their back, side, and stomach. Then, we judge how much we sink into the mattress, and whether our spines look and feel aligned.

A graphic displaying the ideal spine alignment based on sleep position when you're sleeping

Firmness

A quick search might yield the claim that firm beds are best for back pain, but it really isn’t as simple as that. The best mattress firmness for back pain depends on your body type and sleeping preferences, and a bed that’s too soft or too firm can cause problems.

A medium to medium-firm bed (between a 5 and 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale) is typically best for most sleepers with back pain. It should have the right amount of lift while still providing some cushion.

However, your experience of firmness can change depending on how much you weigh: lightweight folks tend to find beds firmer than most, and heavyweight sleepers may find them too soft. It’s important to find out how firmness feels for you, then find the right firmness for you.

What Else Should You Think About As You Shop for a Bed for Back Pain?

There are plenty of other criteria you’ll want to consider when picking out a new bed. Whether you have back pain or not, you’ll want to think about the following elements and how they affect your comfort.

Sleeping Position

Your sleeping position determines what kind of mattress you should choose, as different positions require different features.

It’s also important to take your weight into consideration, since it can affect how you perceive firmness: petite sleepers may prefer a softer bed, while plus-size sleepers may want a firmer bed.

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper

Side Sleepers

For side sleepers, pressure relief reigns supreme. These sleepers have their hips and shoulders digging into the mattress, and need a softer surface to cushion these areas.

But it’s also important that the bed shouldn’t be so soft that their spine slips out of alignment—a potential cause of back pain. Foam beds with strong support cores or hybrids with thick comfort layers should work best.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers are perhaps the easiest to please—they do well with the widest variety of mattresses. They need a bed that keeps their spine straight but not uncomfortably so, with a smidge of pressure-relieving ability for any areas that dig into the mattress. Medium-firm usually works best for these sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Us stomach sleepers need a firm bed. Otherwise, our hips may sink too far into the mattress, causing discomfort and—you guessed it—back pain.

A firm bed doesn’t necessarily mean an uncomfortable one, though. Stomach sleepers should enjoy a bed with a super-firm support core and thin (but pressure-relieving!) foam layers on top. They might even prefer sleeping without a pillow to keep their upper back and neck aligned.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers switch between positions throughout the night, so they need a bed that allows them to do so with ease. The best mattresses for combination sleepers will have some bounce to them, like responsive foams or a springy coil unit.

On the other hand, beds with a thick, cushy foam top run the risk of having you feel as though you’re “stuck” in your mattress, making it difficult to change positions.

Cooling

Temperature gun testing for BB signature hybrid
Testing the Brooklyn Bedding Signture Hybrid’s Cooling ability

Some folks with back pain might also sleep hot—whether it’s from all your stirring to get comfortable or just plain overheating. Regardless of the cause, the best beds for hot sleepers have built-in cooling elements to tackle night sweats.

For example, foam mattresses might infuse the layers with cooling gel, or use foams with larger pores to allow air to flow through the bed. Coils yield a similar result, thanks to the space between the springs. Even a moisture-wicking cover on top of the mattress can contribute to temperature regulation.

How do we test cooling?

We get pretty technical when it comes to a bed’s cooling capability. Our testers use temperature guns to measure the surface temperature of the mattress at given intervals.

First, we take the initial temperature before anyone’s been on it. Then, we lie on it for five minutes and record again. Our final temperature recording is after another five minutes. If the temperature goes up only 5 degrees or less (or not at all!), it’s a sign we’ve got a cooling bed.

This way, we’re able to see whether or not the bed can maintain a comfortable temperature, or if it sucks up and holds onto all that excess heat.

Motion Isolation

If you share the bed with a partner, you may have suffered through sleepless nights, kept up by their tossing and turning. Did you know there’s a way to combat that?

Some beds can stifle movement so it doesn’t travel to the other side of the bed, a capability we call motion isolation. All-foam beds are masters of motion isolation, but you can still get a good amount from hybrid mattresses with cushy foam layers on top.

Good motion isolation means little-to-no disturbances from partners or pets. This cushioning can also be a plus for those with back pain!

How do we test motion isolation?

We use a seismograph app to measure and monitor disturbances. Bigger waves mean more movement is being picked up, and smaller waves (or a straight line) mean little to no movement. Our testers also lie side by side on the mattress and see if they can feel each other’s movements.

WinkBed motion isolation seismograph
Above is the recorded seismograph for the WinkBed’s motion isolation test.

Sex

Sexually active folks with back pain have to consider an extra facet when it comes to finding a good bed. The best beds for sex should have a springy surface that makes moving around relatively easy. So, maybe consider a bed with an innerspring unit and/or thinner foam comfort layers on top.

Edge Support

Titan Plus edge support testing
Testing the edge support of the Titan Plus

Edge support may not be what comes to mind when you think of back pain, but it’s a valuable asset for folks who like spreading out or need help getting in and out of bed, such as seniors.

Strong edges can make it easier to sit or lay near the perimeter of the bed. Mattresses will sometimes reinforce their edges with foam or extra coils to ensure they can bear more weight without egregious sagging.

How do we test edge support?

Our testers will sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes, then they’ll lay on the edge for a minute. This way, we can determine how much the edges sag and whether or not we feel secure within the mattress perimeter.

Delivery

A lesser-known consideration for mattress shopping is the delivery method, especially now that you can shop for a bed online. Most online mattresses will arrive compressed in a box, and you have to wait a few days for them to fully expand. It makes it easy to transport the bed to your room, but some folks might not want to wait to have to use their bed.

Some companies offer free white glove delivery, which means they’ll send a team to deliver and set up your mattress. Sometimes, this can also mean removing your old mattress. If you want to eliminate a lot of hassle, you might want to consider buying a bed with white glove delivery—such as the Saatva RX

Having a team transport, unpack, and place your bed can also be very beneficial for anyone whose back pain limits their movement or lifting ability.

Which Mattress Type is Best for Back Pain?

all types of mattresses illustration

Hybrid beds generally have the best balance of support and comfort features for addressing back pain. Therefore, all of the mattresses featured in the roundup above are hybrid beds.

That being said, the best mattress type for someone’s back pain also  depends on personal preference. You may be able to find an all-foam bed that meets your needs—just make sure it keeps your spine aligned.

If you want to consider other mattress types, we’ve outlined the pros and cons of each:

Memory Foam

Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid construction

Memory foam beds are some of the most popular options, especially for those looking for that iconic “hugging” feeling. When it comes to back pain, though, that sink needs to be backed up by support, otherwise your spine will fall out of alignment.

Side sleepers with back pain might appreciate a memory foam mattress, as they need pressure relief the most and tend to do better with softer, cushioning beds.

Innerspring

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress

Innerspring mattresses are the most traditional tried-and-true mattress type. They consist of a spring unit plus a thin comfort layer on top, so they tend to be great for folks who need lots of support.

Most folks with back pain may need something with a bit more cushioning, but stomach sleepers might enjoy the firmness and lift these beds can offer.

Hybrid

The construction of a hybrid mattress, tested by Julia Forbes

Hybrid beds are constructed with both an innerspring unit and multiple comfort layers. They bring the best of both worlds, so it’s no surprise that we recommend them for sleepers with back pain.

These beds have a balanced profile of lift and comfort that work for a variety of sleepers and body types. Most people with back pain should be able to find a hybrid bed that’s soft or firm enough for their needs.

Latex

Julia Forbes, testing a latex mattress

Latex is derived from the sap of rubber trees and has a bouncy feel. Latex mattresses are best suited for folks who prefer a springy bed, such as combination sleepers or sexually active couples. They’re a great choice for eco-conscious shoppers, but not the most budget-friendly option.

These beds also provide a unique sort of pressure relief that can benefit folks with back pain. It’s a different feeling to memory foam, so there won’t be as much sinkage, but the buoyant nature of latex leads to a more responsive cradle.

What Causes Back Pain?

The causes of back pain are numerous and varied. Some are easily treated, while others require more involved solutions from a medical professional. If you’re experiencing back pain you’re far from alone: about 25 percent of U.S. adults report having lower back pain in the last three months.³

Common physical causes range from muscle strain caused by heavy activity to complex musculoskeletal issues. Interestingly, some health experts cite stress as a culprit, as its effects on breathing could cause tension in the back.⁴

Don’t just trust our word for it. Check out this video by our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, who’s been through his own journey with low back pain. In the video below, he outlines what to expect when seeking treatment for this kind of pain, as well as its causes.

Can a Mattress Cause Back Pain?

Easy answer: yes. If your mattress is poorly suited to your body type, sleeping position, or any other health or preference concerns, it can cause or exacerbate back pain.

As we’ve mentioned, spinal alignment is key. If your bed isn’t supporting your back or encouraging a neutral spine position, chances are, it’s contributing to your back pain. A bed that’s too soft can have you sinking too far, while a bed that’s too firm could prevent necessary pressure relief in crucial areas.

The solution is simple: find a bed that works with you, not against you.

A graphic showing the ways that a mattress can cause back pain through misalignment

Tips to Reduce Back Pain

You might be surprised to find that small lifestyle changes can help with back pain, especially ones related to your mattress or sleeping habits. These tips may help to get you on the road to recovery:

  • Find a mattress that works for you – If your mattress already isn’t working for you, it might be time to upgrade. Make sure to take into account all the considerations we’ve outlined above so you can choose the best mattress for you.
  • Get mattress accessories – Worry not, budget shoppers—you might not have to get a whole new bed. You can add pillows, toppers, or an adjustable base to change the feel of your mattress and make it more conducive to pain-free sleep. (We’ll explore this option more below!)
  • Improve sleep hygiene – Sleep hygiene refers to the choices you make that affect your sleep quality. Good sleep hygiene practices include keeping your room cool and dark, and making sure to turn off screens at least an hour before bed.
  • Relax before bed – If your back pain is linked to stress, it’s important to take a moment to calm your mind before bed. This could mean anything from doing yoga to regulating your breathing. Don’t bring things like work tasks or adrenaline-inducing movies into bed, as they can disrupt the calming environment.

For more guidelines, check out our detailed guide on How to Sleep With Lower Back Pain.

Back Pain Sleep Accessories

Not in the market for a new mattress? No worries, you can truss up your sleeping experience with plenty of accessories to combat your back pain.

Pillows for Back Pain

Sutera Dream Deep Pillow Review 1640x840px
That’s me testing out a pillow!

Not all pillows are created equal, and there’s a chance your pillow could be doing more heavy lifting to tackle your back pain. After all, pillows can be highly useful for taking pressure off your spine.⁵

Depending on your sleeping position, you can place a pillow under areas where pressure might build up. Side sleepers might benefit from having a pillow between their legs, while back sleepers could use one to elevate and cushion their knees. Even stomach sleepers can counteract a sinking mattress with a pillow beneath their hips.⁶

Thankfully, we’ve compiled a list of the best pillows for back pain to make your search easier.

Mattress Toppers for Back Pain

Mattress toppers can change the feel of a mattress without forcing you to purchase a brand-new one. The best mattress toppers for back pain should address whatever concerns you have about your current bed.

If your bed is too firm, you can add a cushioning mattress topper; the same is true if your bed is too soft, as firm toppers exist. Mattress toppers can provide extra pressure relief or support, reviving old, sagging mattresses that aren’t getting the job done anymore.

Adjustable Bases for Back Pain

A person laying on an adjustable mattress
An Adjustable bed frame can provide pressure relief in all of the right places: your shoulders, lower back, and hips.

Adjustable bed frames are all the rage for their ability to turn your mattress into a smart bed, but did you know they’re becoming a popular product to address back pain? It makes sense, since folks may need to lie at an angle that their regular mattress (or a mountain of pillows) can’t provide.

An adjustable bed frame can also be a gift for folks with chronic pain who need lots of shifting. Some of the “smart” bases even offer massage settings, a more luxurious feature to address strained back muscles.

Of course, using an adjustable base for back pain should always correspond with your doctor’s treatment plan. Consult with them to learn the best postures to try and which ones to avoid, as some positions could amplify your pain.

Best Mattresses for Back Pain FAQs

What type of mattress should I avoid for back pain?

Avoid mattresses that don’t offer enough support to align your spine. These may be beds that are too soft (usually super-soft foam options) or cheaply made.

On the other hand, you don’t want a too-firm mattress, as the lack of pressure relief can exacerbate upper or lower back pain when the shoulders and hips aren’t sufficiently cradled..

Stick to beds with solid support units, like hybrid or innerspring beds, or memory foam beds with strong cores. Zoning in the coils or foams is also a plus, as it should help with spinal alignment.

Is it better to have a soft or firm mattress for back pain?

Generally, we recommend medium-firm mattresses for back pain, as they balance softness and support. Preferences and individual experiences being what they are, you may find that some mattresses marketed as “soft” or “firm” don’t feel that way when you test them out.

For example, a petite person might find “softer” beds too firm for their liking, and a heavier person might find that “firm” beds aren’t truly firm enough. It’s important to consider your unique needs, as it’s hard to find a one-size-fits-all bed for back pain.

Is memory foam good for your back?

It can be, but a mattress with springs is generally recommended over one that’s made entirely of foam. Memory foam is a good option for cushioning, but it’s important to have the proper support underneath.

What is the best mattress for lower back pain?

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a wonderful bed for people with lower back pain, as it keeps the lumbar spine lifted with a zoned coil system. During testing, the team agreed that they all felt supported in this key region.

The best mattresses for lower back pain should coax the spine into its proper alignment so the lower back doesn’t sink too far or remain uncomfortably elevated. These beds usually have a medium to medium-firm feel with some pressure relief. We recommend you check out hybrid beds, as they’ll check these boxes.

What is the best mattress topper for back pain?

Mattress toppers change the feel of a mattress, so the best one for your back pain will depend on what you want from your current bed. If your mattress is too firm, you’ll probably want a softer, cushioning mattress topper. If your mattress is too soft, stick to a firmer mattress topper made of stiffer foam or latex.

Features of Celebrity-Endorsed Mattresses:

Organic Luxury Materials

We noticed that a common theme between all the celebrity mattress is the material selection. Common high price tag materials include natural latex, organic cotton, and silk.

Organic, Latex and Hybrid Mattresses tend to have a higher price tag.

Smart Technology

Another common theme we have noticed, especially in athlete endorsed mattresses, is the advanced technology.

Celebrities tend to lean towards smart mattresses that can predict their recovery time, adjust with their bed frame, and give them a full report of their sleep every night.

Exclusiveness

We also found that celebrities are drawn to products not super readily available.

For example, the Kardashian approved Hästens mattresses sell for $14,000-$40,000 depending on the model. Which is a price tag most can’t afford.

Support & Pressure Relief

After testing all of these mattresses, I noticed that all of them performed very well with our pressure relief tests.

Looks like celebrities prioritize comfort and support to keep up with their lifestyles.

The holidays can certainly be a joyful time with family gatherings that consist of laughing around a crackling fireplace, decorating a tree, singing carols, and enjoying delicious food. Of course, the holiday season isn’t always like an idyllic Hallmark movie either. For many people, the holiday season is downright stressful.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to just power through it. There are ways to help you manage some of that holiday stress so that you can make it to the new year a little more refreshed and relaxed.

What Causes Seasonal Stress?

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), about two in five Americans1 say their stress levels increase from November to January each year. Further, nearly nine in 10 Americans2 report that at least one aspect of the previous holiday season caused them stress.

It may not surprise you, but finances are the number one worry for most people, closely followed by the stress of finding the right gift.2 Below, we’ll go over some of the most common causes of stress during the holiday season.

Money

Over half of U.S. adults feel stressed during the holidays because of finances. More specifically, they’re concerned about spending too much money or not having enough money.2

The APA found that this was especially true for households earning under $50,000 annually compared to households earning more than $100,000 annually.1

Gift-Giving

40 percent of adults in America are stressed about gift-giving during the holidays.1 This might include worrying about getting the right gifts for people, having enough time to buy gifts, the anxiety of shopping in crowds, or taking the time to ship them.

Family Time

Depending on your relationship and proximity to your family, you might experience family stress during the holidays. For 38 percent of Americans who can’t be with their loved ones during the holidays, this shows up as stress around missing their family.1

Of course, you might be one of the people who spends a little too much time with your family during the holidays, which can also lead to major stress. The APA says that 22 percent of American adults experience stress around anticipated family conflict during the holidays, and 30 percent are stressed with the pressure to make the holidays feel special.1

Schedules

For many people, the holidays are packed with outside expectations such as work parties, holiday functions, demands from family or friends, and a lack of downtime.  More than 30 percent of American adults report feeling stressed about having too much to do during the holidays.1

Celebrating Different Holidays

People who don’t celebrate mainstream American holidays may have fewer stressful social demands, but instead, these folks may feel left out and underrepresented during this time.

According to the APA, nearly one in five American adults who celebrate traditional Jewish or other non-Christian holidays report feeling stressed because the holiday season doesn’t reflect their culture. The fear of potentially being discriminated against during the holiday season worries 42 percent of Jewish people and 55 percent of other non-Christians.1

Travel

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the busiest travel days of the year are usually the Tuesday and Wednesday3 before Thanksgiving and then the Sunday after. The days leading up to Christmas and just after New Year’s are also some of the busiest in the airport.3

Roads also get clogged with traffic during the holidays, with some of the worst days to drive being December 23 and December 284. Transportation chaos can create a high level of stress, with 19 percent of people reporting holiday stress due to travel.1

Social Media

The time off from work or school during the holidays can mean more time to peruse social media. There is mounting research5 showing that spending time on social media negatively impacts our mental and even physical health. This has to do with comparing ourselves to others, distorting reality, feeling excluded from fun experiences, and distracting us from our own emotions.5

The seasonal uptick of people posting “perfect Hallmark holiday” content can certainly be a recipe for comparison, envy, and stress.

Eating and Drinking too Much

Holiday stressors can have us turning to small comforts to feel better. More than 15 percent of Americans say that they change their eating habits during the holidays (by either binging or restricting), and 13 percent say they increase their use of alcohol or nicotine to cope with the stress.1

Unfortunately, these small comforts may help momentarily, but they add to long-term stress by increasing levels of cortisol6

How to Manage Your Holiday Stress

Talk to Someone

Talking about how you feel can help manage negative emotions7. Further, talking to someone who cares about how you feel can help build a stronger bond between you both.7

According to the APA, 70 percent of people feel comfortable discussing their holiday stress with family or friends, though only 41 percent of those people actually do so.

Don’t Numb Your Feelings

As mentioned, some people may turn to alcohol, excessive eating, or additional screen time to manage holiday stress. Although these coping mechanisms might work to numb the underlying feelings for a while, experts say8 that pushing feelings down can cause them to come back and even worsen.

Manage Your Expectations

Basing your holiday expectations on movies and social media can lead to disappointment. Instead, try managing your expectations.

There will probably be conflicts and not everything will go smoothly. During these times, remind yourself that it’s okay if something doesn’t go perfectly. Also, remember that social media posts, even from friends and family, are just the highlights.

Limit Social Media Time

Limiting your social media time during the holidays may not only help manage your expectations but also free up time for healthier activities. For example, going for a walk, journaling, reading, exercising, or talking to a friend can refresh and sustain you.

Be Mindful of What You’re Eating and Drinking

When we’re stressed, the body craves foods high in sugar and fat9, and these sorts of foods can cause weight gain and increase the stress hormone cortisol. Alcohol has also been shown to increase cortisol levels.6

Limiting the amount of sweet, carb-laden treats and alcohol over the holidays can allow you to enjoy holiday goodies without the guilt that comes from overindulging.

Stick to Your Sleep and Exercise Schedule

Sleep is the foundation10 of our mental and physical well-being. It’s not just about getting enough sleep, though; it’s also important to get consistent and regular sleep.10

In the same vein, exercise improves physical and mental health, and it is one of the greatest tools for managing stress11.

You might be tempted to go to bed late and skip your workouts during the holidays, but instead, try to stick to your regular sleep and exercise routines to keep your health in check.

Prioritize What’s Important

It may be helpful for you to sit down and come up with a list of priorities before the holiday season.

Ask yourself questions such as:

  • What do I want to accomplish this holiday season?
  • Who do I want to spend my time with?
  • How do I want to feel?

Getting clear on your desires before the holiday season may help prioritize what’s important when invitations start coming your way.

Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries may mean saying “no” to activities that don’t align with your priorities during the holiday season.

This may also mean setting boundaries with family or friends you’ll be spending time with. One of the big stressors people face during the holidays is “anticipating conflict with family.”1 By setting important boundaries, you could help prevent a conflict.

Take Time for Yourself

If you’re the type of person who’s always putting others before yourself, this one is for you. Instead of saying “yes” to everything that comes your way, ask yourself first, “Do I really want to do this?” “Will this nourish me?” Just pausing long enough to answer questions like that is a good start. Then, say yes or no from there.

Volunteer

Volunteering or being of service to others releases dopamine12, which reduces stress and increases positive, relaxed feelings. During the holidays, 16 percent of Americans choose to volunteer, which helps them reduce their stress levels.1

Volunteering can also give people a greater sense of meaning and appreciation – not to mention it can improve the lives of those you’re helping.

Get Outside

Getting outside into green spaces can help reduce stress levels13. Of course, depending on where you’re located, it may be colder outside during the holidays. However, cooler temperatures may help you relax since hot weather14 is more likely to cause feelings of stress, anger, and irritability.

Practice Mindfulness

One of the best ways to implement more mindfulness into your life is by adopting a daily meditation routine. The APA recommends meditation as a way to reduce stress and anxiety.13

You might also practice mindfully relaxing each of your muscles, one at a time. To do this, lie on your back on a flat surface. Close your eyes if you feel comfortable doing so. Then, focus your attention on one group of muscles at a time. You’ll inhale and contract the muscles for five to 10 seconds and then exhale slowly, consciously relaxing the muscles and releasing tension. Start from the bottom of your body and work your way up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I control my holiday stress?

There are many ways to control your stress during the holidays, but in general, we recommend sticking to your regular healthy habits as much as possible and, if necessary, introducing some extra self-care. For example, stick to your normal sleep and exercise schedule, consider talking to a friend or family member, and take time to journal or meditate.

Is it normal to feel stressed during the holidays?

Yes, it is totally normal to feel stressed during the holidays. Close to 90 percent of American adults report feeling stressed at least at some point during the holidays.1

Why do the holidays make me anxious?

For many people, the holidays cause anxiety because this time of the year can be filled with social expectations and anxieties, financial and family stressors, loneliness, pressures to eat or drink, and more.

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is a Canadian-made mattress dedicated to providing locally sourced, handmade mattresses at an affordable price. In addition to its all-foam mattress, Silk & Snow now has a hybrid version of their flagship bed. This mattress uses a combination of memory foam layers and individually-pocketed coils.

In this article, I will explain the construction of this mattress and its performance, providing detailed information and evaluations based on my hands-on testing experience.

Pros
The individually wrapped pocket coils are zoned to provide targeted support. Heavier parts of the body, such as the midsection, should receive more support than lighter areas.
The Silk & Snow provides comfort and support for all sleep positions.
Handmade and affordable don’t often go together, but the Silk & Snow Hybrid is a quality mattress at a budget-friendly price.
Cons
Those with restless partners may want to avoid this bed. It doesn’t isolate motion particularly well, which could cause interrupted sleep for people whose bedmate tosses and turns.
The Silk & Snow Hybrid doesn’t sleep exceptionally cool. Those who tend to overheat when they sleep may want to avoid this bed.

Who I Recommend the Silk & Snow Hybrid For:

  • Stomach sleepers – The zoned coils provide targeted support for the midsection. This design feature helps elevate the hips, providing comfortable spinal alignment for stomach sleepers.
  • Sexually active people – The Silk & Snow Hybrid has fantastic bounce, making it easy to reposition, which is why it could be a great choice for sexually active couples.
  • Pressure relief seekers – The soft pillow top and slow-moving foam layers provide cushioning and contouring while the zoned coils give balanced support. The combination of these materials and construction helps eliminate pressure buildup.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Silk & Snow Hybrid For:

  • Those looking for a removable cover – Unlike the all-foam Silk & Snow model, this model doesn’t have a removable cover. Take a look at my Silk and Snow foam mattress review if you want to try that bed instead.
  • Shoppers who want American-made products – Silk & Snow products are proudly made in Canada. If you want to buy a mattress made in the U.S., we’ve got a great list of American-made beds you can check out.

Customer Reviews of the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress

With over 3,500 customer reviews, the Silk & Snow Hybrid has a 4.8 out of 5 rating. Many cite the comfort and supportiveness as pros for this mattress. Although there weren’t many complaints, a recurring one was that the mattress was not as firm as advertised.

Testing the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, we believe the best way to provide you with an accurate mattress evaluation is hands-on testing. Through this testing, I was able to evaluate the Silk & Snow Hybrid for a variety of performance categories.

I also included feedback from other members of our team to get a more thorough understanding of how the Silk & Snow Hybrid does for different body types. While I’m an average-weight sleeper, I had Loren Bullock come in as our lightweight tester for this bed and Spencer Bland as our plus-size tester.

Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6/10

Mattress Firmness Level 6

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your body type will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers might experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

We rate mattress firmness on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the absolute firmest feel you can get. The Silk & Snow Hybrid received a 6 out of 10 from me. The great news here is that this means the bed has a medium-firm feel, which can appeal to a wide variety of sleepers.

How Does It Feel?

I immediately noticed the softness of the pillow top. Although Silk & Snow doesn’t officially label it as a Euro top, I still that it is because it has a padded, tufted surface for extra cushion and is adhered along the edges for stability. I liked how this bed weaved gentle comfort and balanced support while not being too soft or too hard.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is constructed to hold 500 pounds per person, which means it can hold up to 1,000 pounds for couples.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Loren liked the cushioning on this bed and experienced good spine alignment for side sleeping. She felt it was a more comfortable fit than the all-foam version of this bed.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – There was more sink than I anticipated. Often, I experience less sinkage on hybrid beds. This is important to note because sinking too much can lead to spinal misalignment, so I wouldn’t recommend it for those with lower back pain. However, it has wonderful pressure relief.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – This is an interesting mattress for heavyweight side sleepers. On the one hand, Spencer experienced a lot of sinking around his midsection, which could lead to lumbar pain. However, he still felt it had a comfortable surface.

Explore: Best Mattress for Side Sleepers

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – According to Loren, the Silk & Snow Hybrid is a comfy, even-keeled mattress for lightweight back sleepers. The cushioned top provided comfort, and she felt some pressure relief around her midsection.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Although I noticed some slight sinkage at the hips, the cushiony pillow top meant my spinal alignment wasn’t compromised. I appreciated how evenly my weight was distributed.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Spencer experienced more sinking while on his back compared to side and stomach testing. However, he still felt the bed gave him good lumbar support and a comfortable sleep surface.

Browse: Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Based on Loren’s experience, this bed is soft enough that lightweight stomach sleepers should find it comfortable and firm enough to offer balanced support.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – I LOVE the Silk & Snow Hybrid so much for average-weight stomach sleepers that I am considering getting one for myself. The coils kept my hips elevated and spine aligned while I luxuriated in the pressure-relieving cushion of the pillow top.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Some heavyweight stomach sleepers may experience a little sink around their midsection, but it shouldn’t be much. Overall, though, Spencer preferred the Silk & Snow foam model to this one.

Discover: Best Mattress for Stomach Sleepers

Pressure Relief

4/5

I expected this bed’s memory foam option to provide better pressure relief than the hybrid. However, I was wrong about that. The pillow top makes this mattress softer, and this contributes heavily to its ability to relieve pressure. The cozy foam contours pressure points to provide some welcome relief.

Is the Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Good for Pain Relief?

The Silk & Snow does an excellent job of relieving pain. The pillow top brings substantial cushioning, and the sturdy, individually wrapped coils provide a well-balanced distribution of weight. By keeping the body both gently contoured and elevated, there is little worry about pressure buildup or awkward spinal alignment for most sleepers.

Back Pain

Although there was some sinkage around the midsection, particularly for heavyweight sleepers, it wasn’t that noticeable or problematic. There is ample pressure relief and support that should do an excellent job of preventing and alleviating back pain.

Hip Pain

The soft, comfortable pillow top, mid-level firmness, and supportive coils elevate most sleepers properly. These features can help prevent the midsection from sinking, which means that there should be little to no pressure buildup around the hip.

Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is a small area that often absorbs much of our weight when we are sleeping, and this can lead to pain. However, the Silk & Snow Hybrid should do an impressive job of alleviating this pain thanks to its soft pillow top, medium firmness, and even weight distribution.

Looking for more pain-specific beds?

Support

4/5

The sturdy, zoned coils in the Silk & Snow Hybrid provide ample lumbar support for stomach and back sleeping. Side sleepers may sink into the mattress a little. Although this wasn’t a significant issue, I deducted one point because it could exacerbate existent back pain for side sleepers.

Motion Isolation

3/5

In addition to hands-on testing, I used a seismograph app to chart and evaluate how well motion was isolated to the side of the mattress where it was generated. Foam layers typically absorb motion well, so I was a bit surprised that I felt as much motion as I did. Those with restless partners may want to find an alternative to the Silk & Snow Hybrid. Our Best Memory Foam Mattress list is a good place to find a mattress that isolates motion well.

Dog Testing on the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress
Expert Tested, Dog Approved!

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

3/5

The open structure of the coils promotes airflow that helps dissipate body heat. However, other than that, I didn’t detect any cooling properties. That said, I also didn’t notice a temperature spike when I was testing. The Silk & Snow Hybrid may not be the best choice for particularly hot sleepers, but those who don’t get particularly hot during the night may not be bothered by it.

Bounce

5/5

I was impressed with the bounce and responsiveness of the Silk & Snow Hybrid, giving it a 5 out of 5. The surface of the bed bounced back almost immediately. In addition to this mattress quickly responding to weight, it also supports you as you go. Combination sleepers and sexually active couples should appreciate how easily they can reposition.

Edge Support

5/5

The coils and extra firm perimeter of the Silk & Snow Hybrid help prevent sinking when you’re sitting or lying near the edge of the bed, which is why it earned a perfect score here. This feature makes this bed a great choice for those who may need a boost getting out of bed or couples who want to spread out without concern of falling out of bed.

Performance for Couples

4/5

Performance categories such as bounce, motion isolation, edge support, and temperature regulation are important features for couples to consider. The Silk & Snow Hybrid excels in bounce and edge support but is average when it comes to preventing motion transfer and keeping sleepers cool. I recommend this bed for some couples, but if you have a restless partner or sleep particularly hot, this may not be an optimal choice.

Preference-Based Features

Antimicrobial Cover

The Silk & Snow uses innovative material that prevents bacterial growth.

Euro Top

Silk & Snow doesn’t call their cushioned topper a Euro top, but it has all the markings of one.

Locally Sourced Materials

Silk & Snow uses foam, coils, and fabric made by manufacturers in Toronto.

Adjustable Base Compatible

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is compatible with a variety of bases, including adjustable bed frames

Construction: What’s Inside the Silk & Snow Hybrid?

All sizes of the Silk & Snow Hybrid are 12 inches tall and weigh between 61 pounds for a Twin and 124 pounds for a King.

  • The cover is made with antimicrobial polyester that protects sleepers from bacteria.
  • Directly under the cover, there is a 1-inch layer of quilted foam that is infused with cooling gel and hollow fibers that help keep sleepers cool.
  • The third layer is 2 inches of high-density memory foam that encourages pressure relief.
  • Beneath the memory foam, you’ll find 600-1,200 individual coils (depending on mattress size). This section is zoned to provide a firmer middle and balanced support.

The Silk & Snow has an extra firm perimeter that reinforces the structure and prevents sagging when sitting or lying near the edge of the bed.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The Silk & Snow Hybrid arrives compressed and rolled in a box. This delivery method means that your bed will be conveniently placed on your doorstep, but given the weight of these mattresses, you may want someone to help you bring it inside.

Once inside, you will remove it from the box and place it on the foundation. Your Silk & Snow Hybrid should immediately start to take shape. While it is inflating, you may notice a chemical smell. This is known as off-gassing. Although it may be unpleasant, it is not abnormal. Place the mattress in a well-ventilated area to help this smell dissipate more quickly.

Certifications

  • The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

My Verdict

After testing the Silk & Snow Hybrid, I am considering getting one for my home. This is a standout mattress that comes at a very affordable price.

I was particularly fond of how well the Silk & Snow Hybrid supported my hips. Also, this mattress is incredibly responsive, making it a great fit for combination sleepers, sexually active couples, and anyone else who needs to easily reposition on their bed. I wish that it had better motion isolation and cooling, but overall, I thought this was an exceptional bed. The Silk & Snow Hybrid earned an overall score of 4 out of 5.

Tempur-Pedic is a long-standing, respected mattress brand. Their TEMPUR-Cloud® mattress is available as an all-foam option as well as a hybrid. In this review, I’ll be covering the Medium Hybrid model.

What sets this bed apart from its all-foam alternative and other similar hybrid mattresses? Of course, the big selling point over the foam version is the addition of an innerspring unit, which gives this mattress the edge for buoyancy and responsiveness. Keep reading for more on what I found from testing this bed in our mattress studio.

Pros
The soft memory foam is gentle on the hips and shoulders, making it great for side sleepers.
The TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid is one of the most budget-friendly Tempur-Pedic mattresses.
Combination sleepers and sexually active couples should enjoy this hybrid mattress’s responsiveness that makes it easier to adjust positions.
Cons
The lack of edge support may make it difficult for couples to utilize the entire sleeping surface. It may also prevent those with mobility issues from getting out of bed easily.
Despite the addition of coils in its construction, which usually helps regulate temperature, this mattress sleeps hot.

Who I Recommend the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid For:

  • Sleepers who wake easily –  I jumped up and down on this bed, and it registered barely any motion transfer. This means that if you share the bed with someone, you’re less likely to feel them move around in the middle of the night from your side of the bed.
  • Side sleepers – The top foam layer gently cradles the hips and shoulders, but it is also supportive enough for great spinal alignment. This makes the TEMPUR-Cloud® an optimal pick for side sleepers.
  • Memory foam fans – Those who love the slow-moving characteristics of memory foam should enjoy the TEMPUR-Cloud®.

Who I Don’t Recommend the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid For:

  • Those who sleep hot – Often, beds with an innerspring unit, like the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid, will have some airflow, but don’t expect much from this one. It didn’t score well for temperature regulation. If you sleep hot, consider our list of the best cooling beds instead.
  • Heavyweight sleepers – Heavier people are likely to find this bed too soft for proper support. We had a plus-size tester try out this bed as well, and based on his feedback, I think there are better mattresses out there for heavyweight sleepers.

Customer Reviews of the TEMPUR-Cloud® Mattress

With over 1,600 reviews, the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid rates 4.6 stars out of 5 on Tempur-Pedic’s website. Customers admire the TEMPUR-Cloud® for its pressure relief, but some find its lack of edge support to be a disadvantage.

Testing the TEMPUR-Cloud®  Mattress

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

As part of my testing process for the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid, I evaluated this mattress for specific categories that are important to consumers, such as cooling, bounce, edge support, motion isolation, support, and pressure relief. I also used these and other details to help assess whether this bed is a good fit for most couples.

I also enlisted help of my colleagues Loren Bullock and Spencer Bland to test the TEMPUR-Cloud® with me so we could see how it does for different weight groups. Loren served as our lightweight tester, I was the average-weight tester, and Spencer was our heavyweight tester.

Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 7/10 (Medium Hybrid)

Mattress Firmness Level 7

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your body type will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers might experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

Our Sleep Advisor firmness scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest feel. The TEMPUR-Cloud® Medium Hybrid is fairly firm, especially when compared to other Tempur-Pedic mattresses such as the ProBreeze® or the LuxeBreeze®. I gave this mattress a 7 out of 10 for firmness, which means it only slightly firmer than what we consider to be medium-firm.

How Does It Feel?

This mattress felt pretty squishy when I moved around on it, and it took the memory foam a while to spring back to its original shape. Although it is soft and contouring, the lower layers of firmer foam prevent sleepers from sinking too far into the bed. Furthermore, I loved how this mattress gently cradled my hips and shoulders.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

Tempur-Pedic mattresses don’t have a weight limit, but their foundations have a 400-pound weight limit for Twin, Twin XL, Full, and split sizes. Queens and larger sizes have an 800-pound limit.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Loren liked the pressure relief from this bed and said the firmness level was good for her spine alignment.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – My pressure points felt cushioned on the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid and I remained supported.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Overall, Spencer felt comfortable while on his side. He experienced some sinking but not as bad as other positions.

Explore: Best Mattress for Side Sleepers

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Loren liked the gentle cushioning from the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid and added that it was supportive without feeling overly rigid.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – I felt a good amount of sink when I was on my back. I would have liked to have been more supported, and I think that this could have been achieved with a pocket coil interior.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Spencer found himself sinking way too much while on his back to the point of feeling “sandwiched” in the mattress.

Browse: Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – According to Loren, this bed’s even-keeled firmness kept her spine nicely aligned for stomach sleeping.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Although my lower back wasn’t in pain, I wasn’t thrilled about how this mattress made it feel. However, I found it to be supportive and welcoming for the rest of my body.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Our heavyweight tester noticed some tension around his lower back when sleeping on their stomach. It wasn’t a dealbreaker, but there are better beds for plus-size stomach sleepers available.

Pressure Relief

4/5

The memory foam and coils of the TEMPUR-Cloud® provide an almost pressure-free sleeping experience. I noted how much relief the weight-bearing areas of my body, such as my shoulders and hips, received on this mattress. The gentle contouring of the memory foam and the supportiveness of the base layer of coils should make this bed a dream for side sleepers, in particular.

Is the Tempur-CLOUD® Hybrid Mattress Good for Pain Relief?

The answer to this question is yes — and no. Certain body types and sleep positions should find that the Tempur-CLOUD® Hybrid is helpful for pain relief. However, others may not get the kind of support they need to alleviate pain.

Back Pain

Average-weight and heavyweight back and stomach sleepers may experience some back issues when sleeping on this mattress. This is mainly because they could find themselves sinking too far into the mattress. If they sink too much, this could lead to awkward spinal alignment, which may cause back pain. If you’re concerned about this, explore our picks for the best mattresses for back pain.

Hip Pain

For many sleepers, the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid could helpful for hip pain relief. The gentle contouring of the foam and the balanced support of the coils propel this bed to the top.

Shoulder Pain

Similar to hip pain, this bed should do a great job of easing shoulder pain. The memory foam was fantastic at cradling my shoulders, which can help manage pressure in this area.

Support

4/5

I have an average build and was held aloft on the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid. When sleeping on my side, I felt incredibly comfortable and supported. However, there was some sinkage when I was on my back and stomach. It wasn’t particularly worrisome, and I didn’t feel that my spine was in danger of slipping out of alignment.

With that being said, I don’t know if this is the best bet for heavier back and stomach sleepers who are looking for a supportive mattress.

Motion Isolation

4/5

Sleeping with a restless pet or partner can certainly cause you to lose sleep. If you are being kept awake by your bedmate’s tossing and turning, you will want a bed that isolates their motion.

The TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid did an amazing job of prohibiting motion from transferring from one side of the bed to the other. Even when I jumped up and down on this bed, there was barely any motion detected on our seismograph test.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

2/5

After memory foam hit the market, it developed a reputation for causing sleepers to overheat.  Many manufacturers have since implemented a variety of cooling techniques.

Unfortunately, the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid’s foam layers trap heat; it was not cool to the touch, and I felt warm while I was lying on it. The open structure of the coils does allow some air to escape, but hot sleepers will likely want to check out a bed with better cooling properties, such as Tempur-Pedic’s ProBreeze® mattress, which I really liked for cooling.

Bounce

4/5

I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of bounce and responsiveness from this bed. Memory foam is typically not known for these characteristics, but thanks to the firmness of the foam and coils in the hybrid construction, the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid has a faster bounce-back than many other memory foam mattresses. I also found it to be more responsive than beds in the Tempur-Pedic Breeze® collection.

A bouncy, repsonsive mattress is helpful because it can help to move around easier. If you’re someone who loathes feeling ‘stuck’ in a mattress when you try to move, then this is a good feature for you.

Edge Support

2/5

How well a mattress secures you when you are sitting or lying close to the perimeter is known as edge support. This feature allows you to get in and out of bed more easily and makes it easier for couples to utilize the whole sleeping surface.

Unfortunately, with the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid, I felt as if I were going to slip off when I was sitting on the edge. Furthermore, I didn’t feel secure when I was lying near the outside.

Performance for Couples

3/5

The TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid’s motion isolation capabilities make it an excellent pick if you have a partner who tosses and turns. Likewise, the bounce this bed provides should make it easier for sexually active couples to reposition. However, its lack of edge support and less-than-stellar cooling capabilities meant that I had to deduct points in this category.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

The TEMPUR-Cloud® arrives compressed and rolled in a box. While this delivery method is convenient, the box is heavy, and you may need help moving it.

Once you have it where you need it, simply open the box and unroll it. It should immediately start to take shape. You may notice a slight chemical smell during this time. This is known as off-gassing, and while it is unpleasant, it’s common for bed-in-a-box mattresses. Place your bed in a well-ventilated room to help the smell dissipate faster.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® certified –  The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Noteworthy Updates:

  • Tempur-Pedic has donated more than $100,000,000 worth of mattresses to military personnel and disaster relief efforts.
  • Additionally, the company is committed to eco-friendly polices and reached its goal of zero landfill waste for its European and USA facilities in 2022. They are also on track to be totally carbon-neutral by by 2040.

What is the average life of a Tempur-Pedic mattresses?

Tempur-Pedic uses durable, quality materials, and their mattresses should last between eight and 10 years with proper care and maintenance.

How soft are Tempur-Pedic mattresses?

Tempur-Pedic mattresses come in a variety of firmness levels. Depending on the model you choose, you can pick between soft, medium, and firm feel. The TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid I tested is a Medium model, though it felt more like a slightly firm bed to me.

Are Tempur-Pedic mattresses worth the cost?

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are made with quality and durable materials, but that also means they have a higher price tag. However, if you have the money in your budget, Tempur-Pedic products should be a solid investment. I would just make sure you get the specific bed best-suited for your needs.

My Verdict

Tempur-Pedic is a luxury brand, but the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid is a more budget-friendly option from this long-standing company.

This mattress is a side sleeper’s oasis, but it wasn’t as reliable for stomach and back sleeping. For this reason, I think this bed is more limiting to who it could work for. Also, hot sleepers and couples looking to utilize the entire sleeping surface of the bed may want to avoid this mattress, but again, if you’re a side sleeper, I think it’s worth considering. Overall, the TEMPUR-Cloud® Hybrid received a 3.4 out of 5.

Self-care can take many forms, whether it’s eating healthily, exercising regularly, meditating, journaling, or just checking in with yourself. One of the most important ways to practice self-care, though, is to get quality sleep.

The reason sleep is such a powerful part of self-care is that it impacts our physical, mental, and emotional health. We’ll go into these details and share some easy tips to help you achieve better overall health through sleep.

Why Is Good Sleep a Part of Self-Care?

Consistent and sound sleep is a big part of self-care because it affects our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Let’s look at these three components in depth.

Physical Health and Sleep

Sleep is critical for your physical health because it impacts multiple aspects of it1. More specifically, sleep heals and repairs your heart and blood vessels, monitors your appetite and insulin levels, and supports a healthy immune system. Conversely, sleep deprivation can negatively affect these functions. For example, someone who is sleep-deprived can have a harder time trying to fight off a cold.1

Additionally, sleep supports the release of the growth hormone, which explains why children and adolescents2 need more sleep than adults.1

Mental Health and Sleep

A 2021 meta-analysis3 found a causal relationship between sleep and mental health, meaning that participants showed improved mental health symptoms with better sleep quality. Some areas of mental health that were evaluated included depression, anxiety, and stress. In sum, this meta-analysis reveals that good sleep can help improve mental health symptoms.3

Emotional Health and Sleep

Being sleep-deprived can heighten your emotions4, which makes you more susceptible to stressors. Specifically, our negative reactions are stronger when we’re tired and sleep-deprived, which may manifest as irritability, frustration, or sadness.4 You can probably think of a time when you didn’t get enough sleep, and minor inconveniences throughout your day seemed to bother you more than they typically would.

Benefits of Good Sleep

  • Improves memory and learningAccording to experts5, sleep helps with learning new things and strengthening our memory. More specifically, they say the non-rapid eye movement stages of sleep (NREM) are especially important for learning.5
  • Reduces stress levels – Research has found an association between sleep deprivation and increased stress levels. Specifically, a study6 of medical students who worked 24-hour shifts found that participants showed increased stress levels after being sleep-deprived due to their long shifts.
  • Helps maintain a healthy weight – Sleep duration and quality are important for maintaining or losing weight. A 2022 study7 reported that increased quality and quantity of sleep boosted the chances of losing weight by 33 percent.
  • Reduces risk of heart diseaseRecent research8 found that adults aged 58-78 who had irregular sleep patterns were more at risk for heart disease than their peers who had good sleep patterns.
  • Reduces mental health symptoms – Experts have found that better sleep quality is associated with improved mental health. A specific example from this research is that people with insomnia are more likely than those with this sleep disorder to experience higher levels of depression and anxiety.3
  • Strengthens your immune systemResearch from 20219 explains that regular sleep helps maintain homeostatic immune functioning, which helps fight off infection and disease.
  • Helps regulate emotions – Being sleep deprived can heighten your emotional sensitivity, so getting enough sleep every night should help you maintain a more steady emotional balance.4

How Does Self-Care Improve Sleep?

Self-care combines practices to boost our physical and mental health. The great news here is that many healthy habits for good sleep overlap with common self-care practices. We’ll discuss some self-care sleep tips below and explain why these self-care practices can positively impact your sleep.

Self-Care Sleep Tips

1. Exercise Regularly

Exercise is a great way to practice self-care. Physical activity10 helps manage your weight, reduce the risk of disease, and strengthen your body. Not only that, but exercise can improve your cognition11 and positively impact your brain function.

Additionally, research has shown that physical activity can improve sleep quality and duration12, along with helping people fall asleep more quickly.

2. Eat a Healthy Diet

Good nutrition13 lowers the risk of serious health problems and helps keep your body physically fit. With regards to sleep, a 2020 study14 revealed that foods containing tryptophan, phytonutrients, and melatonin can help improve sleep quality.

Some foods that contain tryptophan15 are beef, pork, dairy, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Foods containing phytonutrients16 include many fruits and vegetables. Finally, some foods with high melatonin17 levels are fish, eggs, and tart cherries18

3. Don’t Eat Too Late at Night

Health experts suggest that you stop eating about three hours19 before you go to sleep. This time frame gives your body enough time to digest the food before bedtime. Further, recent research20 has demonstrated that eating within that three-hour window is associated with at least one nighttime awakening.

4. Manage Stress

Being stressed can take a toll on us physically and mentally. To manage stress, the CDC21 suggests that you meditate, exercise, eat well, and get good sleep.

While good sleep can help lower your stress levels, did you know that managing your stress can help you sleep better, too? High stress levels can make falling and staying asleep more difficult22. Stress and sleep deprivation have the potential to become a vicious cycle; if you’re not sleeping enough, your body’s stress hormone levels rise, which can disrupt your sleep even more.22

5. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol

While you may already know that drinking caffeine at night can harm your sleep schedule, you might not have realized that drinking caffeine in the afternoon is not ideal either. Caffeine can stay in your system for up to six hours23, so try to drink your last cup of coffee earlier in the day so you don’t disrupt your nighttime rest.

Additionally, a 2019 study24 found that alcohol and nicotine use in the evenings were both associated with lower quality sleep compared to sleep without the use of these substances. In hopes of improving your sleep quality and taking care of yourself, avoid or limit alcohol and nicotine use, especially in the evenings.

6. Have a Relaxing Nightly Routine

Having a relaxing nighttime routine is a way to take care of yourself because it allows you to unwind after a long day and prepare for a good night’s rest. If you have a consistent routine that you practice every night, you’ll begin to condition your brain and body25 to feel sleepy around your bedtime.

Some practices we suggest for a relaxing bedtime routine are reading, drinking non-caffeinated tea, practicing yoga, listening to calming music, taking a warm bath, or meditating. All of these practices should help to calm your body, reducing your stress hormone levels and promoting easier, better sleep.22

7. Avoid Electronics Before Bed

Electronic devices use blue light26, which can suppress your melatonin levels and shift your circadian rhythm. As a result, this can make it more challenging to fall asleep when it’s time for bed.26 Instead of using electronics before bed, we recommend reading a book or listening to music at night to help yourself wind down.

8. Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule

If you go to sleep around the same time each night, your body will begin to start feeling sleepy around that time each night.25 The American Academy of Sleep Medicine27 recommends going to sleep and waking up around the same time every day, even on the weekends.

Along with going to sleep at a consistent time, getting the proper amount of sleep is just as important. Sleep health experts28 suggest that adults sleep between seven and nine hours nightly. Also, keeping a set schedule can help ensure you set aside the appropriate amount of time to get enough hours of shuteye.

9. Invest in a Quality Mattress

Investing in a good mattress is another great way to prioritize your sleep and wellness. There are top-quality mattresses for all types of sleepers and their varying needs. If you haven’t bought a mattress in a while, check out our in-depth guide with tips on choosing a mattress to help you narrow down your options.

10. Make Your Bedroom Comfortable and Stress-Free

Our last suggestion to help you have a better night’s rest is to keep your bedroom comfortable and stress-free. The ideal temperature to sleep in is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit29. Furthermore, keeping your room dark and quiet can further facilitate better sleep. While a quiet room helps eliminate distractions, keeping out light can help boost melatonin production to help promote sleep.26

We also recommend that you keep your bedroom clean and tidy. A study found that household chaos30 was associated with negative socio-emotional outcomes, including increased stress levels. When your stress levels are higher, it’s more challenging to sleep well.22

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly latex mattress with a soft feel, I suggest you check out the Nest Finch mattress. Nest Bedding was founded in 2011 and was one of the first brands to sell the bed-in-a-box design. Their Finch mattress is made from quality materials and comes with a Lifetime Renewal Exchange deal.

I tested the Medium Nest Finch mattress with one of my colleagues, Loren Bullock, and together we compiled information about the bed. In this review, I’ll share what we found during our testing, as well as important construction details, the pros and cons of this bed, and who I’d recommend it to.

Pros
The Nest Finch is available as either a Medium or Firm version, which is great for buyers looking for a specific level of firmness.
Since this mattress is fully latex, heat shouldn’t build up.
The Nest Finch is very buoyant, which is fantastic for combination sleepers and those with limited mobility. You shouldn’t feel stuck in one position or like you’re sinking.
Cons
While the Nest Finch is not as expensive as some luxury mattresses, it isn’t necessarily the best option for budget shoppers. Before any discount, the Queen size costs $2,349.
This mattress doesn’t come with memory foam. So, if you prefer memory foam in your mattress, then you’ll want a memory foam bed specially.

Who I Recommend the Nest Finch For:

  • Hot sleepers – Latex mattresses typically expel heat, keeping the mattress cool throughout the night. If you get hot while sleeping, the Nest Finch is a great choice as it is a fully latex mattress.
  • People with limited mobility – People with mobility issues can benefromt from a mattress with high bounce and responsiveness like the Nest Finch. This bounce will help you easily get on and off the bed and move from one position to another without feeling stuck.
  • Back sleepers – Back sleepers, especially those of light or average weights, should find the Nest Finch to be really comfortable. I’d say it is firm enough to support a healthy spine alignment but is still cushioned enough for pressure relief in this position.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Nest Finch For:

  • Side sleepers with shoulder pain – While lying on my side I noticed some sinking around my shoulders due to the mattress’ medium firmness. I can imagine this sinkage would be uncomfortable for people who experience shoulder pain.
  • Heavier folks – Since I rated the Nest Finch a 4 out of 10 for firmness, I don’t recommend this mattress for heavier folks. A more firm mattress should provide more spine support and overall comfort for heavier people.
  • Stomach sleepers – Similarly to heavier folks, stomach sleepers will probably feel more supported by a mattress that is firmer than the Nest Finch in Medium. In this case, I recommend trying out the Firm version of the Finch or visiting our top mattress picks for stomach sleepers.

Customer Reviews of the Nest Finch Mattress

Customers on the Nest Bedding website give the Nest Finch mattress an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars. Some aspects of the mattress that customers particularly enjoyed are its cooling qualities, removable cover, and pressure relief. Some customers did note that the mattress is very heavy and others said that it was too soft for their preference.

Testing the Nest Finch Mattress

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, we test mattresses in various ways so we can get the most comprehensive information about each bed. Along with looking at specific performance features like cooling, edge support, bounce, and motion isolation, we pay attention to pressure relief and support.

How a mattress feels is also subjective to your weight, so I tested the bed as average-weight sleeper and had Loren test it as our lighweight sleeper. This way, it gives us even more details of how this bed can accommodate different body types.

Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 4/10

Mattress Firmness Level 4

Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your body type will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers might experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.

At Sleep Advisor, we rate mattresses on a firmness scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the most firm. I would rate the medium version of the Nest Finch as a 4 out of 10, which means it’s quite soft.

The surface of the mattress is plush with a squishy pillow top. While the bed is pretty soft, it is still supportive enoughfor  because of the bouncy latex material.

How Does It Feel?

The Nest Finch mattress is soft and cloudlike with a squishy surface. When lying on the Nest Finch, the latex contoured to my body nicely, providing a subtle pushback. However, the cover didn’t feel cool to the touch.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

While the total weight that the Nest Finch can support will depend on the size of the bed, Nest says that the Queen-size Finch can comfortably support up to 800 pounds.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Loren, our lightweight mattress tester for the Finch, thinks that lightweight side sleepers will sleep very comfortably on this mattress. She felt like her spine was aligned properly and experienced pressure relief around her hips and shoulders. The mattress was soft enough for her to comfortably sleep on her side.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – As an average-weight mattress tester, I really enjoyed the Nest Finch when lying on my side. The latex provided great cushioning for pressure points. There was a little bit of sinking by my shoulders, but I think that could be remedied with the right pillow.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight side sleepers may find this mattress to be a little bit too soft, especially if there’s too much sinkage around pressure points. While side sleepers typically like a softer bed, heavyweight side sleepers may need something slightly more firm to maintain enough spine support. Heavyweight side sleepers might want to check out the Firm version of the Nest Finch instead.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should find the Nest Finch suitable for their needs. Loren felt that the bed provided ample cushioning and she still felt supported. Since this latex mattress is so responsive, Loren added that she felt lifted and not as though she was sinking too much into the mattress.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – When lying on my back, it felt buoyant and responsive but still comfortable and not like I was on a trampoline. I would recommend this bed to average-weight back sleepers.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers may enjoy this bed, but it will ultimately come down to personal preference. There is a pretty even weight distribution across the bed and it can support up to 800 pounds. However, you may feel like this mattress is too soft, in which case the Firm model might be better.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers will probably find the Nest Finch in Medium to be too soft. Even lightweight sleepers might feel like their hips are sinking too much and that their spine is not lifted enough.
  • Average-Weight Sleepers – Similarly to lightweight people, I think this bed is just too soft for average-weight stomach sleepers. I didn’t feel as lifted as I wanted to be.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers and heavyweight sleepers both typically prefer a firmer mattress for extra support. Heavyweight stomach sleepers will most likely find that this Nest Finch far too soft.

Pressure Relief

4/5

The latex in the Finch did a wonderful job of contouring my body, which is helpful for pressure relief. The mattress provides a soft pushback that bridges the gap between comfort and support for those sensitive areas.

Is the Nest Finch Mattress Good for Pain Relief?

Overall, I think the Nest Finch mattress could be good for pain relief, but its success in relieving pain will ultimately depend on your specific pain, body type, and sleeping position.

Back Pain

The Finch is an excellent mattress for back pain relief. This mattress could be especially helpful for back sleepers since it’s comfortable and supportive for a healthy spine alignment. That said, it’s not supportive enough for stomach sleeping and could wind up worsening lower back pain if the hips dip too low.

Hip Pain

This mattress can be a good choice for people with hip pain since it contains latex to help with pressure relief. However, if you are a stomach sleeper with hip pain, the Nest Finch may be too soft for you. You’ll likely feel like your hips are sinking too much into the mattress, which may worsen hip pain.

Shoulder Pain

If you experience shoulder pain, you may dislike this mattress. When lying on my side, there was some sinking around my shoulders, and I think that for someone with pre-existing shoulder pain, this sinkage is not ideal and could cause further discomfort.

Support

4/5

This mattress provides really good support, which is important for maitning spine alignment. When testing this mattress, my shoulders sank slightly, but I generally felt supported. That said, it’s not ideal for support when it comes to stomach sleeping since people of all sizes won’t be enough lifting in the midsection.

Motion Transfer

4/5

The Nest Finch’s motion isolation is pretty good. The density of the latex layers mostly withheld movement. Even so, I still felt some motion transfer when Loren was getting in and out of the bed. Motion isolation is an important factor to consider if you share a bed with a partner. For even better motion isolation, though, take a look at our favortie memory foam mattresses.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

4/5

Since this mattress is entirely latex, it does well at keeping heat from building up, which is good news if you’re someone looking for a cooler bed to sleep on. However, the Finch didn’t feel cool to the touch, so that could be a drawback if you’re in search of something with strong cooling at the surface. You can check out more of our picks for the best cooling mattresses.

Bounce

5/5

The Nest Finch mattress has fantastic bounce. It’s easy to move around on, which is exactly what a latex hybrid mattress should be. You may be looking for a buoyant, responsive mattress if you have limited mobility, are a combination sleeper, or are sexually active.

Learn More: Best Mattress for Sex

Edge Support

3/5

This mattress has mediocre edge support, which can be a drawback for couples who like to spread out to the edges of the bed or people who have trouble getting in and out of bed. Laying at the edge of the edge is fine, but I was not able to sit on the edge of the bed without sliding off. Since the pillow top is fairly thick, there is quite a bit of sink near the edges of the bed.

Performance for Couples

4/5

There are certain characteristics that couples can benefit from in a mattress, including menial motion transfer, cooling, some bounce, and good edge support. Not only does the Nest Finch bed excel in bounce, but it also has pretty good motion isolation, which means couples should not feel each other tossing and turning throughout the night. They may, however, be disrupted when their partner gets in and out of bed. Another drawback is the averag eedge support on this bed, which may make it harder to spread out. That said, I think this best had plenty of nice attributes for couples.

Plus, if you want a King or California King Nest Finch, you have the option to purchase a “dual split” firmness. This means that each side of the bed can be a different firmness level, catering to each partner’s needs more closely.

Preference-Based Features

Lifetime Renewal Exchange (LRE)

Nest Bedding provides a perk for their customers called the Lifetime Renewal Exchange (LRE). With the LRE, you can renew your mattress one time, whether it’s during the first 365 nights or many years down the line. This renewal consists of receiving a brand-new comfort layer for free. Also, the LRE is sustainable because, instead of replacing the entire mattress, you only have to replace the comfort layer, which can reduce mattress waste in landfills.

Family Owned and Made in the USA

Nest bedding is a family owned business that prides themselves on manufacturing

products in the U.S.

Eco-Friendly Materials

Nest uses eco-friendly materials in their mattresses. For instance, the mattress cover is made with organic cotton and Joma Wool®.

Construction: What’s Inside the Nest Finch Mattress?

The Nest Finch mattress is 10.5 inches tall and is topped with a removable foam cover. This mattress cover is made of stretch cotton and eco-flex quilting, which accounts for the cloud-like, plush feel of the bed.

  • Below the pillow top, there’s a 3-inch layer of natural talalay latex, which accounts for the mattress’ responsiveness, motion isolation, and cooling qualities. This layer is where Nest Bedding customizes the firmness level of their different mattresses; depending on whether you purchase the Medium or Firm version of the Nest Finch, this layer will feel different.
  • The base of the mattress is a 6-inch layer of natural talalay latex, which is much more firm than the layer above. This firm layer acts as a supportive base for the mattress and for you while you sleep. A firm base layer of a mattress not only helps structurally, but also increases durability and longevity.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

When unboxing your mattress, Nest suggests you allow 12 to 24 hours for the mattress to fully expand. There may be a minimal off-gassing scent when you first unbox the mattress, but Nest airs out foam and latex in their factory prior to shipping the mattresses to you, which decreases the degree of off-gassing.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® certified –  The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Noteworthy Updates:

  • The most noteworthy update that Nest Bedding has made to this mattress is changing its name. This bed was formerly called the Natural Hybrid Latex Mattress and is now called the Finch. According to the Nest Bedding website, nothing about this mattress has changed other than its name.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – Nest provides free shipping in the continental U.S. and shipping typically takes between three and eight business days. The mattress will be delivered to your door.
  • White Glove Delivery – If you would like white glove delivery for your Nest mattress, you should call +1(888)992-2001 to schedule. The Nest Bedding website does not clearly state whether or not this service is free of charge.
  • Trial – Nest Bedding provides a 365-night trial period in which you can exchange or return your mattress if you’re not satisfied. The company does ask that you try out the mattress for at least 30 nights before asking to exchange or return the item.

  • Return Policy – You may return your Nest Finch mattress within the 365-night trial period after the first 30 nights. Nest offers free returns during this period.

My Verdict

The Nest Finch mattress has many great qualities, whether it be the excellent responsiveness, the eco-friendly design, or the great balance between support and pressure relief. However, this soft mattress isn’t the best option for stomach sleepers or heavier people since it’s likely not supportive for these groups. However, don’t forget they have this bed in Firm, which could be a great solution if you’re still interested in the Finch.

I do think this mattress is a solid option for some people, especially hot sleepers, and light to average-weight side, back, and combination sleepers. The latex is responsive to pressure points and should still support your spine. Best of all, Nest Bedding’s 365-night trial period is a fantastic way to try out the Finch bed without making a serious financial commitment just yet. This mattress earned an overall score of 4 out of 5.

I’ve tested many neck pillows, but the Cabeau Evolution S3 is definitely among the tallest models. It’s a neck pillow, so I didn’t really expect it to look cute, but the bigger question was whether it was comfortable for sleeping while traveling, right?

The Cabeau Evolution S3 has some cool features that I appreciated while traveling. Some things didn’t work out so nicely, but I wouldn’t necessarily call them drawbacks; they’re just a few things I didn’t enjoy so much. In this article, I will tell you more about my first-hand experience with this unique pillow, including its features, specifications, pros, and cons.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, we test pillows first-hand to provide our readers with a genuine understanding of who we think would like the product. We look at different features such as support, comfort, and more. I was fortunate enough to take the Cabeau Evolution S3 on a trip, having the chance to test this while actually traveling for a more authentic review.

Who Is the Cabeau Evolution S3 Neck Pillow Best for?

Pros: Who Might Like the Cabeau Evolution S3 Pillow:

  • People with a taller neck – This is one of the tallest neck pillows out there, so it should provide excellent support for those with a taller neck.
  • Frequent travelers – The Cabeau Evolution S3 is a convenient neck pillow with a few useful features. As such, it’s a good opinion for those who travel a lot.
  • Budget shoppers – This travel pillow is an affordable model, which is excellent for budget shoppers and those looking for the best value for money.

Cons: Who Might Not Like the Cabeau Evolution S3 Pillow:

  • Those who use headphones – Because this pillow is as tall as it is, I think it might be a little tricky to use with headphones and earbuds. It comes all the way to your ears, so it could be uncomfortable to pair with earbuds.
  • Petite sleepers – Petite people, such as myself, might find this neck pillow a little too tall.
  • Claustrophobic people – When I first put this neck pillow on, I felt it was really tight and tall. It feels a little too “in my face,” which can be a problem if you’re claustrophobic.

What Is the Cabeau Evolution S3 Pillow Made Of?

Cover

The Cabeau Evolution S3 neck pillow comes with a 100 percent polyester cover. You can choose between a few colors, which is always a nice quality.

The cover is removable and washable, but make sure to wash on cool settings only. If you’re going to tumble dry it, do so on low as well. It’s important not to bleach or iron the fabric.

Core

The core of this pillow is filled with 100 percent polyurethane memory foam. We often see this material in neck pillows as it offers excellent support and conforms well. It’s unlikely to dent, so you should be able to sleep for hours without having to fluff the filling as you would with loose memory foam cubes.

The filling is not washable, but you can vent it a little to freshen it up after a trip.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Pillow Firmness & Feel

Firmness

Like many similar travel pillows, the Cabeau Evolution S3 is on the firmer side. In my experience, neck pillows are typically firmer than regular pillows because they have to support your neck and head upright. Nonetheless, this firmness is rather universal, and I can see it working out for many people.

Feel

Even with the firmer feel, this neck pillow is pretty comfortable. It felt nice around the neck, considering it might have been a little too tall for me. The taller construction gives you more support, that’s for sure. I noticed it does a good job of keeping my head in place since it goes all the way up to my jaw.

Loft

As I pointed out several times, this is a taller pillow. It’s 5 inches tall, and although that might not seem like a lot, you should think about how tall your neck is. I don’t have the longest neck since I’m pretty petite, so this pillow was really on the edge of being too tall for me. That said, the loft size can really do its job, supporting both the neck and head.

Weight (Density of the Pillow)

The Cabeau Evolution S3 neck pillow weighs 11.6 ounces. This might be a little heavier than your regular neck pillow. The memory foam inside is dense and firm, which explains the extra weight.

However, keep in mind that 11 ounces is still lightweight, generally speaking, so carrying this pillow around shouldn’t be an issue.

Sleeping on the Cabeau Evolution S3 Pillow

This is a comfortable neck pillow that does a good job of keeping your neck and head supported. It’s meant for flying, but I can see it working out in car rides as well. I tested it out for a few hours and was able to get a good sleep, which means it passed the ultimate test.

How comfortable it will be for you depends on how its loft size fits your neck. What I also liked was being able to anchor it to the headrest, so I didn’t have to hold it.

Sleep Advisor’s Performance Ratings for the Cabeau Evolution S3 Pillow

Temperature

3/5

I wouldn’t say the Cabeau Evolution S3 feels hot, but it’s also not designed for cooling, which might be an issue if you’re a particularly hot sleeper traveling during hot weather. Memory foam does have a reputation for overheating, though. Luckily, Cabeau has a cooling version of the Evolution neck pillow for those who sleep hot.

Support

5/5

Support is unmatched here, mostly thanks to the taller loft. I really felt it kept my neck and head in place, which is great to avoid hitting your head on the window. The memory foam filling is dense and firm, further promoting good support for the neck and head.

Durability

5/5

I can see this neck pillow lasting a long time, but this also depends on how frequently you use it. The foam filling is unlikely to develop any dents since it keeps coming back into shape after you remove the pillow. The polyester cover looks equally durable, but again, I only tested this pillow for a few hours. That said, I’d still give it a 5 out of 5 here since the foam and cover feel and look quite durable.

Comfort

4/5

I can say the Cabeau Evolution S3 is a comfortable neck pillow, but its height might not work for everyone. As mentioned, it has a taller loft that could be uncomfortable for those with a shorter neck. For me, it felt a little suffocating, which I didn’t love. Nonetheless, I was able to sleep nicely, and that’s what counts.

Off-Gassing

4/5

The Cabeau Evolution S3 might have an odor when you first unpack it. This is because it has memory foam, a material that’s known to off-gas a little. If you notice any odors, don’t worry because those should dissipate within a few hours.

Allergens

1/5

Unless you’re allergic to polyester or memory foam, you shouldn’t have any allergic reactions when sleeping on the Cabeau Evolution S3 neck pillow. However, this pillow has no certifications for the foam in it, which is why I only gave it a 1 out of 5 here.

Cleaning & Care

5/5

Cleaning the Cabeau Evolution S3 neck pillow is easy and quick. The cover is washable, so just throw it in the washing machine on cool settings. You can tumble-dry the cover or leave it outside to dry.

Sleep Trial & Warranty

2/5

This pillow comes with a 1-year warranty and no sleep trial. Since there’s no sleep trial, I gave it a 2 out of 5 here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do travel neck pillows actually work?

Travel pillows can be amazing when you want to nap during your trip. It doesn’t matter if you’re flying or traveling in a train, bus, or car, a travel pillow can make the experience much more comfortable by keeping your head and neck well-supported.

Can you wash the Cabeau neck pillow?

The neck pillow itself is not washable, but the cover is. You can easily remove and wash it in the washing machine, but I would advise against washing the memory foam core.

How do you store a Cabeau neck pillow?

This pillow is easy to fold and pack into a small travel bag. This makes it convenient to carry around when you’re not actually sleeping on it.

My Final Thoughts on the Cabeau Evolution S3 Pillow

Although I didn’t love the tall design, I can’t complain about its comfort. It felt more comfortable than it looked, I’ll give it that.

There’s plenty to like about this neck pillow, though, starting with anchor straps to attach it to the seat and then the adjustable strap to tighten the pillow around your neck. Oh, and did I mention it has a little pocket for your earphones or a small snack?

The temperature might be a drawback for you if you’re a particularly hot sleeper. I can see it being too much to wear when the weather is hot, in which case it might help to have a few cooling features. Overall, it earned a score of 3.6 out of 5.
