Best Mattresses for Heavier and Plus-Size People (2024)

Your mattress should always give you the proper amount of support as you sleep. For larger people, finding that support is especially important—it ensures that you snooze comfortably, without sinking too deep into the bed.

The best mattresses for heavy people will take both your needs and preferences into account. We’ve analyzed several beds in order to find those designed with bigger bodies in mind, and sorted them for your perusal below.

Best Mattresses for Heavy People

How We Chose the Best Mattresses for Heavy People

I’m one of the lead product testers for Sleep Advisor, and as part of my job, I get to try out these beds first-hand, evaluating important performance features to help break down whether a bed is good and who should get it.

For this roundup, our team chose mattresses with features that are especially important for plus-size people, including overall support. As a petite person, I’m not always going to have the same experience on a mattress as a heavier person. This is why it’s important to include feedback from our plus-size testers, which you’ll find throughout the page.

You can hear from one of our heavyweight testers, Spencer Bland, in our video review. Other plus-size testers from our team featured on this page include Sean and Patrick.

Weight Disclaimer

In this article, we use common terms like “plus-size” and “heavyweight” interchangeably, but it’s worth noting that individual experiences and body types don’t always directly correlate to these categories. To be more specific, we categorize heavy folks as those weighing over 230 pounds and have chosen beds and written our reviews with that in mind.

What We Want to See in a Mattress for Heavyweight Sleepers

Enhanced Support Systems

You’ll find that many mattresses on this list are made with specialized, highly durable materials aimed at delivering more advanced support, whether that be through denser foams or stronger coils. Multiple beds on this list are also specifically marketed toward plus-size sleepers, showing a genuine effort from brands to target the needs of this group.

Thicker Construction

Another important quality is that the mattress is thicker to help ensure the sleeper doesn’t bottom out. A heavyweight sleeper will naturally sink more into a bed, which is why the layers of a mattress must be thick enough that they don’t leave the sleeper unsupported and uncomfortable.

Medium or Firmer Feel

You’ll find that the mattresses on this list have at least a medium to medium-firm feel. Though firmness isn’t indicative of support, firmer beds are often more beneficial for heavier sleepers to help them remain more lifted.

Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers Overall

The Titan Plus is a considered response to the needs of plus-sized sleepers. It’s built to be sturdy, responsive, and cool, with a hybrid design that marries foam with extra-strong coils. Its edge support and 1,000-pound weight capacity make it a popular bed for couples, as well.

According to our testers, this mattress doesn’t sink too low, contours well to the lower back, and keeps your spine comfortably straight. One plus-sized reviewer, Patrick, noted that the Titan Plus stood out amongst the competition: “Unlike many mattresses that I have tried, my weight is evenly distributed over this surface and I feel extremely comfortable.” It’s easy to see why this bed earned our top spot.

Spencer, another heavyweight tester from our team, shared that the Titan Plus is his favorite mattress he’s tried so far. While he didn’t feel as comfortable on it for stomach sleeping, he really enjoyed it for side and back sleeping, adding “I may be taking this bed home, it’s so comfortable.”

Pros
Stellar support system – The Titan Plus characterizes its coils as “industrial level,” and Patrick noted that “the edge to edge coils are super strong.”
It stays cool – “This bed is designed to keep heat moving,” said Emma, another of our reviewers.
A dream for couples – The two layers of foam above the robust coil unit should provide excellent motion isolation, making the Titan Plus a strong choice for couples.
Cons
Quite firm – This bed will feel particularly firm to side sleepers and petite folks.
Not much cradling – Fans of foam layers that hug you probably won’t enjoy this bed.
Not as great for stomach sleeping – The only position Spencer didn’t enjoy as much on this bed was on his stomach.

Why the Helix Plus Earned Best Mattress for Heavy People with Lower Back Pain

Formerly introduced as the Nightfall, the Helix Plus uses higher-density foams and thicker coils than other models in the brand’s lineup. It should feel particularly comfortable for heavy people with back pain, as it expertly balances pressure relief with noteworthy support.

“Most mattresses aren’t built to provide the support that plus-size people need, especially not in the middle section,” said Sean, one of our mattress testers. “That means their hips are sagging all night … [but] the Helix Plus is built to improve back pain and stand the test of time.”

Spencer also got a chance to try out the Helix Plus. While testing this bed on his back, Spencer said there was “great lift and light cushioning, plenty of support for the lumbar zone.”

Pros
Support plus softness – The Helix Plus still offers an initially plush, pressure-relieving hug in conjunction with its medium-firm feel.
Built to last – The TitanCore coils were built to withstand years of pressure, and the foams should also resist sagging over time.
Cooling cover options –You can pay extra for a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover that absorbs and redirects body heat.
Cons
Firm but not ultra-firm – The Helix’s comfort layers are a bit soft in comparison to others detailed in this roundup.
Motion transfer – The Helix Plus will transfer some movement when a person gets up or fidgets in their sleep.

Why the WinkBed Plus Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Heavy People

WinkBed mattresses are known for their superior lumbar support and handcrafted details. The WinkBed Plus is a variant that prioritizes the needs of larger sleepers, incorporating a high-density, anti-sag foam and a zoned layer of latex over its coil unit.

Our plus-sized reviewer, Sean, very much appreciated the thought that went into the WinkBed Plus. He complimented its cooling features, its soft pillow top, and the amount of support that the hybrid design lent his body. “Overall, this is an excellent mattress, especially if you’re a heavier sleeper like myself,” he concluded.

Pros
Handcrafted to last – The WinkBed Plus is thicker than most beds sold online; our tester Emma remarked that it appears “super durable and very hardy.”
Firm, but with a plush introduction – Mark noted that this bed’s pillow top “really relieves that pressure and gives you a nice minimal cradle” before segueing into its signature firmness.
Sturdy edges – If you want to optimize your space next to a partner or enjoy sitting on the side of your bed, you’ll dig the WinkBed’s solid edges.
Cons
Too firm for lighter sleepers – The WinkBed Plus truly was designed for larger bodies, so more petite or average-sized sleepers might find it a little unyielding.
Higher price – A queen will typically run you close to $2,000.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Rest Memory Foam Earned Best Memory Foam Mattress for Heavy People

Memory foam is usually synonymous with cushy comfort, and the DreamCloud Premier Rest is no different. This all-foam bed is the brand’s softest, but it still brings the support. Thus, it could be a great option for plus-size folks who want a cushy bed.

It’s best suited to those who sleep on their side, thanks to its pressure-relieving surface. The firm support foam, however, ensures the spine remains in alignment even as you sink into the bed’s luxurious surface. Plus-size tester Spencer was most comfortable on his side with this bed, adding “I don’t feel like I’m sinking in too much, but the softer feel is a happy medium.”

Pros
Luxury touches – A cashmere cover and specialized foam layers give this bed a high-end feel for only $1,400.
Keeps the spine aligned – “I don’t know what it is about DreamCloud, but all their mattresses are about lumbar support,” said Julia.
Cons
Not for stomach sleepers – This bed is too soft for stomach sleepers of all sizes, let alone heavy ones—and may not work for some back sleepers, even.
Not the bounciest – This foams are geared toward motion isolation, not responsiveness.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Innerspring Mattress for Heavy People

Quality spring systems are synonymous with support in a bed, and as the brand that pioneered the “online luxury innerspring,” Saatva knows its coils. It’s no surprise that their flagship model, the Saatva Classic, brings the A-game.

For one, it features two innerspring units: a zoned layer of pocketed coils and a more traditional interconnected innerspring. This bolsters support and overall longevity of the mattress, making it a great fit for plus-size folks who need a bed that’ll last. Spencer echoed this sentiment, saying that he “prefers Saatva mattresses” and has “found them to be supportive and comfortable for heavier builds.”

It also boasts a number of luxurious features to sweeten the deal, including targeted lumbar support, a sumptuous pillow top, and free white glove delivery.

Pros
Customizability – As Julia puts it, “The Saatva Classic works hard to be a flexible option for all sleep positions and all body types.”
Free white glove delivery – Every Saatva mattress comes with free white glove delivery. This means that a team of professionals will deliver the mattress, help set it up, and even take away your old one.
Cons
Returns cost extra – If you don’t love your mattress and want to return or exchange it, it’ll run you $99.
Could isolate motion better – If you share the bed with a partner or pet, you’re likely going to feel their movements from your side of the bed, such as getting in or out of bed.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Mattress for Heavy Back Sleepers

The Emma Hybrid Comfort is a hybrid bed with two claims to fame: it’s supportive enough for plus-sized people, and it’s especially good for couples. Our Lead Product Tester, Julia, gave it a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale and especially enjoyed how supportive it felt.

Under its moisture-wicking cover, the Hybrid Comfort has three relatively thin layers of specialized foams followed by a sturdy innerspring unit. This gives it a firmer feel that should benefit plenty of plus-size sleepers, while also providing essential pressure relief for those who sleep on their back.

Pros
Zoned support – The Hybrid Comfort’s seven zones each help to provide precisely the right amount of pressure relief to different areas of the body.
Durability – We think the Comfort Hybrid should have remarkable longevity because of its sturdy components.
Cons
Not as responsive – The thickness of the upper foam layers might make repositioning somewhat difficult.
Not much cradling – The Emma Hybrid Comfort is too firm to allow you to sink deeply into its layers.

Why the Nolah Evolution Comfort+ Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Heavy People

The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ is an upgraded version of the popular Nolah Evolution. With the addition of denser foams and stronger springs, it can support up to 1,000 pounds of weight. Most impressively, its strength is coupled with a luxurious softness, which can be a hard balance to strike in a bed made for plus-sized people.

“This is one of the few mattresses, [in my opinion], that lived up to the hype. It feels like a luxurious five-star hotel bed to me,” said Spencer.

“While it may be on the softer side, I do feel like there is still more than enough support to be gleaned from the mattress,” added Julia, our lead product tester. As a tall stomach sleeper, she was also pleased by how this bed combined plushness and lift.

Pros
Rare mix of soft and supportive – Julia was earnestly taken aback by how this mattress managed to be plush and supportive at the same time.
Incredibly versatile – “This mattress isn’t just for plus-size sleepers,” Julia said. “The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ just about works for everyone.”
Cons
Cooling didn’t wow – The Evolution Comfort+ wasn’t overly hot, but it also didn’t knock anyone’s socks off with its cooling capabilities.
Costs a pretty penny – Given its many layers and proprietary foam, this isn’t a budget mattress.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Earned Best Mattress for Heavy Side Sleepers

Plus-sized side sleepers have to navigate a delicate balance when mattress-shopping. They’ll want a bed that’s not too firm, lest their shoulders and hips feel too pressurized; but they’ll also need enough support to keep them from sinking too deeply into the layers.

According to our testers, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe should rise to the challenge. It’s a hybrid bed that comes in a Firm, Medium, or Soft feel, enabling you to find the sweet spot that will soothe your hips and shoulders while providing the right amount of lift. For heavyweight side sleepers, we think the Soft model, specifically, could give them the pressure relief they need to feel most comfortable.

Pros
Suits multiple sleeping positions – It has multiple firmness options, but even the medium model should help accommodate sleepers who need pressure relief and support.
It’s crazy cool – This hybrid bed has an impressive regimen of cooling features, from its GlacioTex™ cooling cover to the phase change material in its foam.
It’s got bounce – This responsiveness should be an asset for heavy sleepers who toss and turn at night.
Cons
It won’t cradle you as much as softer beds – The initial feel of this bed is more springy than the deep-hug sensation offered by traditional memory foam.
It can get chilly – Emma found herself cozying up to her partner for warmth while testing this bed.

Why the Plank Firm Earned Best Firm Mattress for Heavy People

As its name suggests, the Plank Firm doesn’t mince words—it’s a very firm bed for people who don’t like to sink into their sleeping surface. That kind of feel can be uncompromising without being uncomfortable, and it’s especially beneficial for heavy people who need a solid support base.

The Plank’s dual-sided design makes it versatile even as it’s committed to being one of the firmest beds on the market. The mattress has a Firm side and an Extra-Firm side, but based on Spencer’s experience testing it, the Firm side was most comfortable for him in all positions.

Additionally, this is an all-foam bed, so it shouldn’t be as pricy as many of the other beds in this roundup.

Pros
Flippable design – Just in case your tastes are quite precise, you can switch between Firm and Extra-Firm feels by flipping this mattress.
Affordable price – A queen model is often available for less than $1,000 around certain holidays.
Motion gets absorbed – The Plank’s foams absorb motion better than coils, so you probably won’t wake up your partner if you shift around at night.
Cons
Not very bouncy – Foam might isolate motion more adeptly than springs, but it doesn’t have the same responsiveness.
It’s, well, firm – There’s not even a pretense of cushioning on this bed.

Why the Bear Elite Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Heavy People and Muscle Recovery

The Bear Elite Hybrid mixes foams, zoned coils, and advanced performance textiles to great effect. Its hybrid construction should be supportive enough for larger bodies. “[It has] great responsiveness, and it works for all heavy sleeping positions—10/10 recommend,” noted Spencer.

The Bear Elite is also replete with cooling components—our testing team gave it an impressive 4.5 out of 5 for cooling. Using their testing gun, the bed’s temperature only went up by 10 degrees when lying on it for 10 minutes, which shows great temperature regulation.

Its most unique feature, however, is its cover. It’s made with Celliant®, a performance textile that reportedly converts body heat into infrared light, which in turn helps to boost blood flow and reduce tissue inflammation in the areas that contact the fabric. In layman’s terms, the cover may help with recovery after a workout or an active day.

Pros
Choose your firmness – Heavier people will probably enjoy the Firm model the most, but no matter which you choose, you’ll get what Stuart calls a “really luxurious high-end feel.”
Cool all the way down – The cover, the copper in the memory foam, and the airflow around the springs make this a stellar cooling mattress.
Zoned springs – “Sleepers with back, hip, or shoulder pain will love the zoned coil system,” said Stuart.
Cons
Too plush for stomach sleepers – “The pillow top may still be a little plusher than hardcore stomach sleepers prefer,” said Stuart.
It might be too cool – This hybrid is so cool, it was a bit too chilly for Sydney, who sleeps cold naturally and prefers a warmer mattress.

How can a mattress affect a heavyweight person’s sleep quality and overall health? “The right mattress will support your body, help you sleep more comfortably, may prevent frequent awakenings throughout the night and avoid problems like back pain.”

– Dr. Raj Dasgupta

Most Important Factors When Shopping for a Mattress As a Heavier Person

Materials and Durability

If you’re a larger person, finding mattresses constructed with high-quality materials is a must. Make sure you look for things like dense CertiPUR-US® certified foams and high coil counts, as these things often translate into longer durability.

Our heavyweight tester, Spencer, also emphasized how prioritizing the unique needs of plus-size sleepers makes a big difference. “From what I’ve noticed with mattresses specifically made for heavier people, like the Titan Plus, whatever they are using seems to be working.”

Cheaper mattresses are usually made with lower-quality materials, which can result in sagging and discomfort, both of which tend to happen sooner for heavier folks than lightweight ones. When these problems set in, you may have to replace the bed much sooner than you’d like.

Weight Capacity

If you weigh more than 250 pounds, you should look for a bed that will accommodate your weight and potentially a partner’s. Most standard mattresses may not have the proper support mechanisms, but there are plenty of specialty mattresses that are made with heavy folks in mind. There are even bariatric mattresses available online if you need medically specialized support.

Many mattress manufacturers will list the bed’s weight capacity online as part of its specifications. If the bed’s weight capacity is hard to find, you can try contacting the manufacturer to ask about it.

For this list, we’ve tried to prioritize mattresses that have inclusive weight limits and proudly market to heavyweight people.

Mattress Thickness

If you weigh more than 200 pounds, you may want to consider a bed with a profile of at least 12 inches and substantial compression support. Taller beds are indicative of more or thicker layers which can allow heavier people to transition through the layers at a proper rate. However, some higher-quality products offer extra thick layers that provide enough support even at 10-11 inches.

Spencer added that it’s not just the thickness of the bed that’s going to make the biggest impact but rather the materials that go inside of it. So even if you have a 16-inch thick mattress, you could still bottom out if it’s not supportive enough.

Mattress Firmness

Although firmness is subjective, certain factors can be used to determine how soft or hard most people will find a given mattress. A higher weight tends to create more sinkage and hug. By sinking too far into a mattress, pressure will build up and your spine may not be aligned properly, both of which can cause pain.1

Expect an additional 1-2 inches of sinkage if you are over 230-250 pounds. You can help to compensate for the extra sinkage by choosing a mattress that is 7-8 out of 10 on the Sleep Advisor mattress firmness scale. “Definitely the firmer mattresses do better at supporting heavier body types in all sleeping positions so heavier people, if they prefer it, should lean towards a slightly firmer build of a mattress,” said Spencer.

How We Test Beds for Plus-Size Sleepers

Cooling & Temperature Regulation

One of the most common complaints from larger folks is that they get too hot during sleep. It usually happens when your mattress doesn’t have enough room to breathe and to provide enough air circulation.

In most cases, foam material “sleeps hot” compared to latex, innerspring, and hybrids. These days, this problem can usually be solved by seeking out mattresses constructed with more premium products.

Many mattress companies implement cooling properties, such as gel infusion, breathable covers, and perforated foam, that will help keep sleepers cool during their slumber. Considering that sleeping hot is a common complaint even amongst lighter and average-weight sleepers, many manufacturers now offer specialized “cooling” beds to improve airflow properties and heat distribution.

Our team of mattress testes put the Helix Plus mattress to the test and tested its temperature control features with a temp regulation gun.
How do we test cooling?

We actually get pretty technical: we use a temperature gun to test the initial temperature of the mattress, the temperature after lying on it for five minutes, then again five minutes later. This way, we can find out whether the mattress can actually keep a stable temperature or if it absorbs and traps heat. We also take into account our personal opinions and experiences, like if it feels cool to the touch or we get sweaty.

Edge Support

Beds that are supportive from edge to edge are often favorable for heavier people because it allows them to utilize the whole bed without fear of rolling off. This can be especially good for people who co-sleep or just toss and turn across the bed. It is also beneficial if you sit on the edge of the bed when you are getting dressed.

Solid edge support generally indicates improved durability and quality construction. Hybrid and coil-on-coil construction have historically provided great mattress edge support.

Testing Edge Support in a Mattress
Testing a mattress’s edge support.
How do we test edge support?

We test it in two positions. First, we sit on the edge and tie our shoes, and then we lie on the edge for about a minute. We compare how far the mattress dipped while bearing our weight versus its initial height. This allows us to see and feel how secure the edges feel.

Pressure Relief

Heavy sleepers, especially those who sleep on their side, often benefit from some kind of pressure relief. Even firmer mattresses may offer pressure relief because of how weight affects a bed. But, overall, heavyweight folks should find a bed that produces a comfortable sink and doesn’t cause pressure buildup in sensitive areas like the hips, shoulders, or other joints.

How do we test pressure relief?

Again, we get technical. We have team members of different body types (petite, average, and heavyweight) to try out the bed laying on their side and back. Then, we are able to record any buildup via a pressure map. This map will show the amount of pressure buildup in a given area through a color scale, like in the image provided. The best beds for pressure relief won’t have many high-pressure areas (if any).

Helix Plus Pressure Map Results Sleep Advisor

Sleeping as a Plus-Size Couple

Different body sizes require different blends of comfort and support, and a bed with enough support for a heavier person may feel like a rock for someone who is much lighter.

If both you and your partner are substantially heavier than average, you do have a handful of options out there. In recent years, the online market has introduced beds designed specifically for heavier folks with enhanced support systems and durability.

Other Factors to Consider When Shopping for a Mattress for Heavyweight People

Best Mattress Types for Heavy People

There are many types and materials on the market today, each with pros and cons. In this section, we’ll break down the major bed types (memory foam, latex, innerspring, and hybrid) and how they can affect sleep for heavy people.

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials
Memory Foam

According to many large sleepers, memory foam is one of the best bed types out there. Why?

Memory foam mattresses, whether on the hard or soft side, are designed to even out pressure points. One of the biggest complaints that heavier sleepers have is that certain areas of their body end up hurting (i.e., their back or hips). Memory foam works to provide balanced support that contours the body.

Despite the numerous benefits, this mattress style can cause people to feel hot due to the lack of breathability in the material. Worry not because there are some great cooling memory foam options on the market today.

Latex

For bigger people, latex mattresses are a solid option. Latex is made from the sap of rubber trees, and this process creates a mattress that promotes breathability as well as bounce and support.

Unlike many traditional foam mattresses, latex’s breathability helps keep you cool through the night. Latex mattresses are also known to be durable and more responsive than other foams, which could be helpful for combination sleepers and sexually-active couples.

Julia Forbes, testing a latex mattress
Our lead product tester, Julia Forbes, inspecting a latex mattress for heavy sleepers.

Innerspring

Mattresses that contain innersprings often work well for heavier people because the coils provide solid, balanced support.

Furthermore, the coils also often offer solutions to many of the common mattress complaints echoed by larger sleepers – including an unsupported mid-section and a lack of edge support. The coils also allow air to move freely through the mattress, which addresses another common problem of larger sleepers – overheating through the night.

Hybrid

As the name suggests, a hybrid mattress is simply the combination of two or more types of material. Hybrid mattresses are often a good choice for heavyweight sleepers because they provide the soft contouring of memory foam with the support and bounce of innerspring mattresses.

These mattresses also tend not to run as hot as traditional all-foam beds because of the breathability that the coils provide.

Bed In A Box

Many newer mattress models are being sold online and go through a compression process that allows them to be roll-packed into smaller boxes for easier shipping. This process greatly reduces overhead, and many bed-in-a-box brands can offer pretty outstanding savings and value for their price.

To help facilitate this boxing process, these brands use materials that can be compressed. Folks with heavier weight considerations should evaluate brands carefully for manufacturer-recommended weight limits and features that can offer them the additional support they might require. Boxed brands with zoned support systems, foam and coil hybrids, firmer materials, or extra height might be a better match.

You should not believe, however, that your weight considerations preclude you shopping for your mattress online. Many online brands specifically target higher weight concerns by not compressing their product, and there are bed-in-a-box brands with added details that should support your frame just as comfortably as an in-store model.

Check Out Our Complete Guide: Best Mattress in a Box.

Sleeping Position

To find the mattress that best meets your needs, you will need to consider more than just your size and shape. You will also need to consider what sleep position(s) you prefer. Weight is distributed differently depending on how you like to sleep, and you’ll likely need to consider different support and comfort options depending on the sleep position you like.

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper
Side Sleepers

For side sleepers, pressure relief is key. In this position, your full body weight is pressing into the mattress along a narrower surface area. For many sleepers in this position, a plusher bed is a better match because the softness allows all their weight to sink in and conform to their curves.

Heavier folks, however, should ensure that their weight will not cause them to push through the softer materials too quickly. Although firmer beds can cause pressure build-up, they may still be better suited for larger side sleepers.

Back Sleepers

The kind of mattresses that are best for heavier back sleepers will likely largely depend on where they carry their weight. Some back sleepers like a firmer bed that puts a greater emphasis on support, but a firmer bed may not be as comfortable for some, especially those with pain points to consider. You’ll want to look for the right balance to cradle your shape while also supporting your lumbar and spine alignment.

Our in-depth guide: Best Beds For Back Sleepers

Stomach Sleepers

Heavier folks, in particular, need to be mindful of stomach sleeping as beds that are not firm enough can leave their hips uncomfortably dipped inside the mattress. This can make it difficult for the spine to remain in a neutral position. If you carry most of your weight in your hips and abdomen, you’ll likely want to steer towards firmer beds.

Read more: Best Mattresses for Stomach Sleepers

Combination Sleepers

If you like to mix up your sleep positions, you’ll want to consider beds that are aimed at versatility. Additionally, you’ll want to take a mattress’s bounce and reactivity into account—mattresses that have high bounce and good reactivity make it easier to reposition through the night.

Combo sleepers may not enjoy softer beds, as these might make you feel “stuck” in the bed.

Learn more: Top Mattresses for Combination Sleepers

Spinal Alignment

Regardless of your sleeping position and size, spinal alignment is crucial to ensure a pain-free sleep. Heavier folks should make sure they have a bed that brings the proper support while keeping their spine straight.

For stomach sleepers, this would usually mean something firm enough to keep the hips elevated. For side sleepers, they should have some pressure relief and dip for areas like the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle. And remember that heavier folks often need firmer beds than they might expect, since they tend to sink further than lighter sleepers.

A graphic displaying the ideal spine alignment based on sleep position when you're sleeping

Sex

If you’re sexually active, a bouncy mattress may be something to consider. And for those on the heavier side, a firmer innerspring or hybrid could be your best bet. This combination ensures you stay supported while also allowing for ease of movement on the bed’s surface.

See more: Best Mattresses for Sex

Motion Isolation

Sleep with a partner? Chances are, you might feel their movements on the other side of the bed and end up waking up because of it. There’s a way to deal with this: motion isolation.

Motion isolation is a mattress’s ability to absorb motion and prevent it from travelling across the surface. The best material to do so is usually a dense foam, often in the upper layers of the mattress, if not the very top.

Many heavy sleepers may struggle to find a bed that isolates motion well, as a firmer bed with less foams is usually better suited to their needs, but there are a few firmer foam beds and hybrids we’ve recommended that fit the bill.

Budget

Budget is a concern for all sleepers, not just heavyweight folks. Unfortunately, since most beds for plus-size folks are built with higher-grade, industrial materials (and often larger or thicker), they may cost more than other non-specialty beds. Fortunately, there are plenty of affordable mattresses that should work for heavier sleepers.

Warranty & Trial

Warranties and trials are important for consumers to figure out how they feel about a mattress and how long it might last. Warranties allow you to get reimbursed in certain circumstances, such as when your mattress begins to sag or any construction defects. Some brands even boast about lifetime warranties, which may even allow you to get a percentage of your purchase back years after use. (Keep in mind that warranties have a lot of fine print about what is considered reimbursable.)

Online mattress brands typically offer extensive trial periods in which you can test out the mattress at home and return it if you don’t like it. Most sleep trials are at least 100 nights, which is plenty of time to truly see whether a mattress meets your needs and expectations. Some companies even over sleep trials that last as long as a year.

Heavy folks should take advantage of any trials and warranties as they look for the best beds to support them.

How to Tell if Your Mattress Needs Replacing

Sagging

The most common thing you might experience with any mattress is that it starts to sag. This is different than normal wear and tear–usually, impressions that your body makes are left behind and lingering when you lay down to rest the next night. It can happen in the center or around the edges of the bed. It can cause discomfort as it throws your spinal alignment out of whack, or just feel plain annoying when you notice it.

All mattresses can start to sag once they reach the end of their lifespan, but we’ve compiled a list of the best mattresses that won’t sag that should last much longer.

Sinking

Sinking is most common with memory foam beds. There is usually supposed to be some sink, thanks to softer comfort layers on top, but as time goes on, you might find yourself sinking into the firmer support layer. It’s uncomfortable, and you won’t be reaping the benefits of combined pressure relief and support.

Softening

On the opposite end, a bed’s firmness should remain the same. When your medium-firm bed starts to feel more medium, it might be a sign that it’s time to replace it. Repeated weight-bearing can wear down the foam or coils in the mattress, causing it to feel softer than it did at time of purchase.

If you see any of these in your bed, and you’ve had it for a while, it may be time to throw in the towel and get an upgrade.

Mattress for Heavy People FAQs

What mattress firmness is the best for heavy people?

Heavy people typically feel most comfortable on a firm or medium-firm mattress. These firmness levels provide the level of support that a larger body needs, whereas a softer bed may result in too much sinkage and the sensation of being “stuck” in the mattress.

If you like soft mattresses or you sleep on your side, you can opt for a mattress that provides cushioning top layers as well as a supportive foundation. You can also look into mattress toppers that will up the initial plushness of your bed.

What mattresses are best for heavy people with back pain?

Heavy people with back pain should likely look at mattresses that combine robust support with a top layer that provides excellent pressure relief. We recommend you start by exploring our picks for the best beds for back pain here.

Hybrid mattresses with a high coil count and a foam comfort layer that contours to the body are good bets.

Perhaps counterintuitively, you don’t want your mattress to be too soft if you’re experiencing back pain. With that said, firm and medium-firm mattresses that can support your spine are best1.

Is a thicker mattress better for heavy people?

Those who weigh in at 200 pounds or more will likely want to consider a taller mattress. Generally, mattresses with a profile of 12 inches or more are better fits for heavy people because the height indicates more or thicker support layers. This helps those on the larger side transition through the layers at a proper weight instead of crashing through too quickly.

Can a heavy person sleep on a bed in a box?

Yes, bigger people certainly can sleep on and enjoy a bed-in-a-box, as long as the mattress has the proper support and comfort components. Many online mattress brands have designed models that cater specifically to plus-size customers, and they still ship these beds by first compressing them into boxes.

Just as you would with any mattress purchase, you should investigate the quality and durability of the materials in your bed-in-a-box order. But just because a mattress comes in a box does not mean it’s lower quality than a bed purchased from a brick-and-mortar store; in fact, these mattresses are often some of the most modern and advanced available.

What type of bed frame is best for heavy people?

If you’re a plus-size sleeper, we recommend exploring our picks for the best bed frames for heavy people. It’s important to find options that are sturdy and can accommodate a weight limit—plus a heavy mattress, as most of the mattresses on our list are sturdily constructed and can get pretty hefty. As some of these mattresses are tall, you may also want to stay away from platform/elevated frames.

What features should a 300-pound sleeper look for?

Sleepers who weigh 300 pounds should prioritize finding a bed that properly supports them and suits their preferences. Generally, we recommend looking for a mattress with an enhanced support system—usually, this would be industrial coils, but a dense, firm foam core can work for some sleepers.

It’s also important to choose a firmer mattress, at the very least a medium-firm feel. This is because heavier bodies experience firmness differently, and what feels firm to a lightweight person can feel softer to a plus-size sleeper as they sink further into it. This is also the case for mattress thickness—look for a thicker or taller bed since you may be sinking deeper into the layers. You don’t want to bottom out and feel the uncomfortable support core.
