Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

For this roundup, we focused on the best-recommended mattresses for those looking for luxury features. As with all the mattresses we review, we put luxury mattresses through a series of tests to evaluate how they perform in different sleeping positions and for various body types by integrating human feedback and testing them with devices like pressure relief maps, temperature guns, and seismograph apps.

However, given the price tag on luxury beds, we closely scrutinized them and held them to a higher standard when it comes to the quality of materials and craftsmanship, the types of cooling technologies used, how well they relieve pressure, and whether they provide enhanced motion isolation, smart technology, and edge support. Luxury beds with longer sleep trials and warranties typically score slightly higher than those with industry-average policies.

What to Look for in a Luxury Mattress

Quality Materials

A luxury mattress should feature materials that not only look and feel good but will hold up well over time. In many cases, high-density memory foam, cotton, wool, high-gauge coils, and latex are good materials to look for in a luxury mattress.

Trial

Most top mattress brands offer a trial period, giving you time to test the mattress out at home before deciding whether or not to commit to the purchase. Generally, the luxury mattress brands we feature give you anywhere from 90 to 365 days to test their mattresses. However, return policies vary among brands, so you should look into this before buying to avoid any surprises.

Warranty

Luxury mattresses usually have longer warranties. At a minimum, a luxury brand should offer a 10-year warranty, though some offer 15 or 20 years. A longer warranty can help provide peace of mind because it means the brand stands behind the quality of their product.

Pressure Relief

If you’re spending more on a new bed, you want to know it can help ease any pain and discomfort. We think pressure relief is an important quality in a luxury mattress because it can make your sleep space more comfortable and hopefully improve your sleep as a result. Memory foam and latex are often the best for pressure relief, so look for those materials in comfort layers.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

We like to include temperature regulation here because it can help keep sleepers from feeling too warm at night. Luxury mattresses are typically equipped with temperature-regulating features, like a breathable cover, gel-infused memory foam, perforated foam, or coils. You’ll find that the mattresses on our list are all equipped with temperature-regulating materials.

Why the Helix Midnight Elite Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Side Sleepers

Side sleepers looking for a little something extra from their mattress should be delighted by the Helix Midnight Elite. Helix’s Midnight line was designed for side sleepers in particular, and this bed represents the most opulent model available from the brand. With two layers of individually wrapped microcoils and one extremely durable innerspring unit, this hybrid mattress outdoes most of its competitors in terms of coil count and distribution.

Helix Midnight Elite Mattress
The Helix Midnight Elite in our testing studio.

This luxury mattress also has a grand total of five foam layers, each of which plays a key role in comfort, support, and responsiveness. These layers should provide essential cradling for those who sleep on their side, and the coils beneath should keep them aligned and comfortably elevated.

What’s the Helix Midnight Elite Made Of?

The Helix Midnight Elite is a whopping 16 inches tall and has nine total layers.

Dig Into The Layers

Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Construction

  • Layer 1 – Cover and Pillow Top. The top of the mattress is soft and pressure-relieving. It also regulates the temperature, thanks to the GlacioTex™ Elite cooling fabric.
  • Layer 2 – Comfort Layer. A dense layer of Memory Plus Foam cradles your body.
  • Layer 3 – First Microcoil Comfort Layer. Mini coils map to your body’s curves and angles to promote proper alignment at the mattress surface.
  • Layer 4 – Support Layer. Another layer of dense Memory Plus Foam ensures you won’t sink too far into the bed.
  • Layer 5 – Second Microcoil Comfort Layer. Another layer of microcoils compresses more readily at the hips and shoulders for pressure relief.
  • Layer 6 – Support Layer. This latex-alternative foam responds to your movements and provides extra lift.
  • Layer 7 – Transition Layer. A layer of Helix Responsive Foam acts as a buffer between the comfort layers above and the main innerspring unit below.
  • Layer 8 – Support Coils. The bottom half of the bed features 8 inches of individually wrapped steel coils that have been reinforced along the mattress’s entire perimeter.
  • Layer 9 – DuraDense Foam Base. The entire mattress sits on top of a dense foam base.

My Take: I call this bed “a whole unit and then some.” A lot’s packed into 16 inches of mattress: three layers of specialized coils, a pillow top, and four comfortable foams, to be exact. Even with all those coils, it’s still very pressure-relieving and feels both soft and lofty.

Pros & Cons

What I Liked
Plenty responsive – With three separate coil layers, it’s no surprise that the Helix Midnight Elite has stellar bounce. Moving around in this bed should feel seamless, a boon for combination sleepers and sexually active couples.
Regulates temperature – It can get pretty hot in the studio, but during testing, the Elite performed like a champ. The cooling pillow top keeps the surface at a cozy temperature while the coil units get air moving through the bed.
Potential Drawbacks
Some setup required – This bed is big, so it makes sense that it comes in two boxes. There will be more setup needed than with a traditional bed-in-a-box. Namely, you’ll have to attach the topmost layer yourself.
Not for stomach sleepers – Though the Midnight Elite should work for a variety of sleepers, I found that as a stomach sleeper, I wasn’t totally satisfied. We’re going to need a firmer bed to prevent sinking around the midsection.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Elite

Customers appreciate the Helix Midnight Elite mattress for its excellent balance of comfort and support, tailored for side sleepers, but some report it to be less suitable for those who prefer a very firm mattress.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Luxury Mattress Overall

The Saatva brand is iconic in the luxury mattress brand for good reason. They’re known for high-quality materials and generous policies, and this rings true for their classic model. The Saatva Classic should strike a near-perfect balance: it’ll cradle your pressure points while the two coil units within the mattress work to keep you lifted.

The brand offers three firmnesses and two heights to choose from, along with free white glove delivery for the ultimate high-end experience. All in all, the Saatva Classic is just that—classic—so it’s no wonder it’s at the top of our list.

Saatva Mattress Side view in Sleep Advisor's testing studio.
Preparing the test the Saatva Classic in our studio.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Saatva Classic comes in three firmnesses (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and two heights (11.5 and 14.5 inches).

Dig Into the Saatva Classic Layers

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress

  • Euro Pillow Top. A plush, breathable surface with firmer quilting in the center for support.
  • Memory Foam Lumbar Crown. A crest of foam balances pressure relief and lift under the lower back.
  • First Innerspring Unit. Pocketed Coils support your entire body while responding to your movements. Specialized coils in the center bolster the lumbar zone.
  • Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. Located within the two coil units, this wire helps keep the spine aligned.
  • Second Innerspring Unit. A more traditional innerspring unit with interconnected coils gives the bed an extra layer of durability.
  • High-Density Foam Rails. The bed has high-density foam rails around the perimeter to prevent the edges from sagging.

The memory foams used in the Saatva Classic mattress have a CertiPUR-US™ certification. This means the foams are free of toxins, heavy metals, and other harmful substances.

My Take: In my opinion, the Saatva brand is synonymous with luxury. It’s no surprise that the Classic gives you everything you need in a high-end mattress: comfort, support, durability, and that extra touch (in this case, double spring units) that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Pros & Cons

What I Liked
Customizable – You can choose between three firmness levels depending on your preferred sleeping position. Back and stomach sleepers should like firmer models, side sleepers may prefer the softest option. There are also two choices for the height of the mattress.
High marks for convenience – Saatva delivers their beds fully expanded, unboxed, and ready to use. Their white glove service will ensure that your new bed is set up in your room, with no heavy lifting required on your end.
Potential Drawbacks
Could isolate motion better – I found the Saatva Classic to be super springy, which is a plus for those who move around a lot in bed. However, it’s not going to work for especially sensitive couples—you’re probably going to feel your partner’s movements since the bed isn’t the best at dampening motion.
Not particularly cooling – While it should have plenty of airflow thanks to its two coil units, there aren’t any dedicated cooling elements in the Saatva Classic. If you’re a particularly hot sleeper, you may want to consider a bed designed to regulate temperature.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Heavy People

The WinkBed is a hybrid model equipped with premium features that give the bed a springy, lifted surface. Inside the bed, a team of foam layers and pocketed coils work to support the back.

There’s even four firmness options, so you can tailor your WinkBed to your unique needs, including a “Plus” model that’s built specifically for plus-sized sleepers. But heavy sleepers can pick a plusher model for more pressure relief, or firmer one for sturdier lift and feel properly supported on each.

WinkBed Construction Gif
Exploring the layers of the WinkBed mattress.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed is 13.5 inches tall and available in four firmnesses: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.

Dig Into The Layers

WinkBeds Mattress Construction

  • Tencel™ Cover. Tencel™ is a Eucalyptus-derived fiber that’s soft and breathable.
  • Euro Pillow Top. A Euro-style pillow top outfitted with plush gel foam should give a luxurious feel right at the surface of the mattress.
  • Transitional Foam Layers. A series of foam layers work to support the lower back, absorb some motion, and make for a comfortable transition into the support coils of the bed.
  • Innerspring Unit. The coils here are individually wrapped to reduce motion transfer. They’re divided in a 5-zone support design to provide more support in heavier areas that normally experience more pressure.

Our Take:  “There are multiple firmness options—in fact, four—to choose from, so it should work for just about anyone… It works for all body types, no matter if you’re lightweight or heavyweight.” – Loren Bullock, Lead Product Tester

Pros & Cons

What I Liked
Plenty of options – WinkBed shoppers have their choice of a Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm model depending on their body type and preferred sleep position. There’s also a Plus version designed for sleepers over 200 pounds.
Durable – The WinkBed not only feels firm, but holds up great over time (the brand conducts a lot of stress-testing to make sure of this). Because it’s super sturdy and durable, it’s able to accommodate couples as well as plus-sized folks.
Potential Drawbacks
Not much cradle – Loren noted during testing that this bed does not have the distinct memory foam feel a lot of folks love. If you want something that’ll “hug” your body, check out the foam mattresses on this list.
Motion can carry – Because of the WinkBed’s hybrid construction, you’re going to get a lot of bounce. If you share the bed with a light sleeper, your movements are likely to wake them up.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Earned Most Comfortable Luxury Mattress

If you’ve dreamt of sleeping on a fluffy, floating cloud, look no further than the aptly named DreamCloud Premier. The mattress’s luxurious feel starts out with a Euro top cover and continues through layers of high-end materials all strategically chosen and ordered to conform to your body.

For extra assurance that you’re making the best luxury mattress choice for you, the company’s policies are notably generous: Shoppers get a full year to test out the bed along with a forever warranty.

Exploring the top comfort layers of the DreamCloud Premier.

What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?

The DreamCloud Premier is 14 inches thick with seven layers. All the foams used in its construction are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Dig Into the Mattress Layers

DreamCloud Premier Mattress Construction

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. A cashmere blend cover not only provides softness but also resilience and absorbency for long-lasting comfort and use.
  • Layer 2 – Memory Foam (1 inch). This memory foam layer provides that classic “hugging” feeling on top of the mattress.
  • Layer 3 – Soft Foam (1 inch). Plush foam enhances the bed’s contouring ability.
  • Layer 4 – Transition Foam (2.5 inches). A standard foam layer keeps your body aligned.
  • Layer 5 – Coil Unit (8.5 inches). Individually wrapped coils respond to your movements and provide essential support. Thicker coils line the perimeter for enforced edges.
  • Layer 6 – Base Foam (1 inch). A strong, stable foundation for the bed.
  • Layer 7 – Lower Cover. The lower cover keeps your mattress from sliding around and sports handles for easy transportation.

My Take: This bed is an upgraded version of one of my favorites, the DreamCloud. The DreamCloud Premier represents a marriage between body-conforming foams and an individually wrapped coil unit, which helps safeguard your spinal alignment.

Pros & Cons

What I Liked
Pressure relieving – The plush foams on top of the Premier make it a perfect match for side sleepers or folks who need expert cradling around their joints. The coils below only enhance this cushioning so you won’t sink in.
Fairly priced luxury – For a luxury mattress, we consider this bed to be a bargain. For a queen, it’s about $1,000 thanks to DreamCloud’s frequent sales.
Potential Drawbacks
Motion isolation could be better – Despite the soft foams, the Premier’s springs mitigate a lot of the bed’s ability to isolate motion. Movements are more likely to travel across the bed’s surface and disturb your sleep.
Edges are lacking – The Premier’s edges leave something to be desired, unfortunately. I found that laying near them was fine, but when it came to sitting on them, there was a lot of sink.

Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Premier

Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Why the Nolah Evolution Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Restless Sleepers

Restless sleepers often switch between all the sleeping positions, tossing and turning throughout the night. This habit can prove tricky if the bed resists your movements, or if you sleep with a partner who wakes up easily.

The Nolah Evolution tackles both of these issues. First, the combination of coils and foams allows for a springy surface that makes repositioning seamless. The bed also excels at motion isolation, so you can move freely without waking up your partner. It’s also available in three firmness levels, but combination sleepers may prefer the Luxury Firm model for middle-of-the-road comfort and support.

What’s the Nolah Evolution Made Of?

The Nolah Evolution mattress is 15 inches tall with eight layers. Choose from Plush, Luxury Firm, or Firm models.

Dig Into The Layers

Taking a look at the Nolah Evolution mattress construction

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. Organic cotton provides natural breathability alongside cooling ArcticTex™ fibers.
  • Layer 2 – Euro Topper (2 inches). The cooling, cushioning pillow top makes for a super comfortable mattress surface. Along the edges of the Euro top is a gusset that lets excess heat escape.
  • Layer 3 – AirFoamICE™ (2 inches). Graphite-infused foam provides pressure relief while staying cooler than classic foams.
  • Layer 4 – High-Resilience Foam (2 inches). This dense foam adds support to the layers above it.
  • Layer 5 – High-Density Transition Foam (1 inch). Springy like latex, this foam responds to your movements.
  • Layer 6 – Coils (8 inches). Three zones of HDMax™ coils keep your body elevated while allowing for more give beneath areas with pressure buildup. These springs are reinforced along the perimeter for edge support.
  • Layer 7 – Recycled Plant Fiber Foundation. This bottom layer acts as the foundation for the mattress.
  • Layer 8 – Lower Cover. The anti-slip cover also has handles for easier transportation.

Our Take: “I found that this mattress is pretty responsive. Even though it’s got some plush and sink to it, I was still able to move around and reposition easily without feeling like I was being sucked in by quicksand.” Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons

What I Liked
Cooling technology – The Nolah Evolution has a 2-inch AirFoamICE™ graphite-infused foam layer to draw the heat away from your body. This prevents other foam layers from overheating while maintaining optimal temperatures. There’s also a gusset near the top of the mattress that vents away unwanted heat buildup.
Strong edges – The edges of the Nolah Evolution are reinforced in the coil unit, and we definitely noticed their strength during testing. You should be able to make use of the full surface area of the mattress and sit on the edges.
Potential Drawbacks
Too soft for some – The soft layers on top of this bed are great for pressure relief, but not a good fit for folks who need firmer support. Stomach sleepers and some plus-sized sleepers may find themselves sinking in too far.
Bulky – This mattress is pretty hefty at 15 inches tall, and it boasts a ton of layers. We noticed it was difficult to move, so we recommend you enlist the help of a friend.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution

Earning a 4.9 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit. Customers appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its superior pressure relief, but some have mentioned that the edge support could be improved for a more consistent sleep surface.

Why the Bear Elite Hybrid Earned Best Hybrid Luxury Mattress

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a unique luxury mattress that goes beyond the typical hybrid construction: it’s designed for active folks who need rest at the end of a high-energy day. Its cover gives new meaning to the term “cool-down,” with temperature-regulating Phase Change Material and innovative Celliant® technology. The latter is a fiber that purportedly converts excess body heat into infrared energy, which then promotes recovery for strained muscles.

Bear Elite Mattress image
Filming our review of the Bear Elite Hybrid.

It’s also uniquely soft without sacrificing any crucial support from its zoned coils. Combine all that with sturdy, reinforced edges, and I think you’ll agree that this bed checks a lot of boxes!

What’s the Bear Elite Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in three firmnesses: Firm, Medium, or Soft, so you can feel free to customize it to your liking. It’s 14 inches tall with six layers.

Dig Into The Layers

Taking a look at the Bear Elite construction in the lab

  • Layer 1 – Cover. Celliant® fibers and Phase Change Material create a cozily cool surface.
  • Layer 2 – Memory Foam. This memory foam layer is infused with copper, which is naturally breathable and antimicrobial.
  • Layer 3 – Dynamic Transition Foam. This supportive, responsive layer contours to your body and keeps you aloft.
  • Layer 4 – Coil Layer. Zoned coils target the lower back for balanced lift and give, with reinforced springs along the edges.
  • Layer 5 – Support Foam. A dense foam base.

Our Take: “It’s got the best of both worlds. It’s got a familiar mattress feeling with plushness in the cover and foam layers, but quick response and support from the springs.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons

What I Liked
Strong edges – Stuart noted that the Bear Elite Hybrid had a solid perimeter: “The edges are extra-reinforced by the zoned coil system, so you can really take advantage of the entire surface of the bed.”
Keeps cool – The combination of Celliant®, Phase Change Material, coils, and gel- and copper-infused foams all contribute to the Bear Elite Hybrid’s ability to regulate temperature. It’s a benefit for athletes, sure, but also for hot sleepers who tend to overheat at night.
Potential Drawbacks
Could feel too cool – This aforementioned coolness can be too much for some. My fellow tester Sydney felt the Bear Elite Hybrid might feel too cold for folks who prefer a warmer bed, like herself.
Not for plus-size stomach sleepers – We think that some stomach sleepers, especially those on the heavier side, may find the Bear Elite Hybrid too soft to support them. If you’re on the lighter side, it’s best to stick to the Firm model.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid

According to Bear’s website, the Bear Elite scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Hot Sleepers

If you’re a hot sleeper on the lookout for a luxury bed with enhanced cooling, we think the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite is an excellent choice. Unlike its namesake in Arizona, this bed brings the chill.

Cooling begins at the top: The bed’s cover is made with phase change material for advanced temperature regulation. The mattress also features gel in its memory foam layers to combat trapping heat. Lastly, the coils in the two (yes, I said two) innerspring units help foster additional airflow.

The Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite does an great job of staying cool after being laid on.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite Made Of?

The Sedona Elite by Brooklyn Bedding has six layers and is 14 inches tall.

Mattress Construction of the Sedona

Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite construction image

  • Layer 1 – Cooling Cover. The cover is woven with GlacioTex™ fibers to provide cooling to the soft surface.
  • Layer 2 – Copper Memory Foam (1.5 inches). Copper keeps this foam cooler than its traditional counterpart and prevents the growth of unwanted bacteria.
  • Layer 3 – Micro-Wrapped Coils (2.5 inches). The first layer of springs is made up of miniature coils for quick responsiveness and pressure relief.
  • Layer 4 – Transition Foam (1.5 inches). A dense foam layer acts as a buffer between the two coil units.
  • Layer 5 – Ascension® Coils (8 inches). Individually encased coils act as the main support unit for the bed.
  • Layer 6 – Foam Base (1 inch). A solid, dense foam base for durable stability.

Our Take: “This mattress is built with several cooling features, including a uniquely woven top knit fabric with cooling panels to draw heat out and away from the body. Additionally, the top layer uses 1.5 inches of copper infused memory foam to help maintain a cool sleep environment.” – Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons

What I Liked
Versatile – The Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite has a medium-firm feel that should work for a variety of sleeping positions. It feels supportive enough for most back sleepers while still maintaining plush comfort for side sleepers who need pressure relief.
Bouncy – Double the coil units means double the bounce. Repositioning should feel like a breeze on this cool mattress.
Potential Drawbacks
Poor motion isolation – These same coils, however, allow for a lot of motion to travel across the mattress surface. Couples should expect disturbances when their partner shifts around on the bed.
Could be too soft – For all its supportive lift, this mattress still ends up on the softer side of the firmness scale. Stomach sleepers or heavier sleepers should consider a firmer alternative.

Customer Reviews of the Sedona Elite

On Brooklyn’s website, the Sedona Elite ranks 4.8 out of 5 stars. One potential drawback of the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona mattress is its higher price point, but customers noted that it offers exceptional comfort and support, particularly for those seeking a luxury sleep experience.

Why the Saatva Rx Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Back Pain

As the name implies, the Saatva Rx is a luxury mattress specifically designed for sleepers with medical conditions that exacerbate back pain. This bed keeps you supported while adjusting to your movements, working to ensure that pressure won’t build up in sensitive areas.

The Saatva Rx is reinforced in the center of the mattress to specifically help tackle pesky pain in the lower back. Features like a lumbar crown, specialized quilting, and zoned coils will ensure this area of your body remains comfortably lifted.

The top layer of the Saatva RX mattress
The top of the Saatva RX.

What’s the Saatva Rx Made Of?

The Saatva Rx is an impressive 15 inches tall.

Dig Into the Mattress Construction

    • Cover. This bed is topped with a breathable, antimicrobial cover for comfortably safe sleep; this cover is also quilted in the center to give you extra lift in your back.
    • Lumbar Crown. At the top of the mattress is a lumbar crown, a crest of foam designed to enhance lower back support even more, while also relieving pressure buildup.

    • High Density Foam Layers. Next, two dense foam layers encase a micro-coil layer for comfortable cushioning.

    • Micro-coil Unit. This miniature innerspring layer provides pinpoint responsiveness, support, and pressure relief.

    • Therapeutic Support Core. The bed’s therapeutic support core consists of pocketed coils topped with 2-inch foam modules to reduce motion transfer.

    • Base. Everything sits on top of an eco-friendly stable base layer.

Our Take: “The pressure relief, spine alignment, and responsiveness are outstanding with the Rx. Saatva went above and beyond to make sure it would accommodate folks with back and joint pain.”Loren Bullock, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons

What We Liked
Plenty of bounce – Both the mini coil unit and the regular coil unit contribute to the Saatva Rx’s springy surface. If you toss and turn while sleeping, you won’t feel “stuck” in this bed.
Should last long – We believe the Saatva Rx’s height, specialized layers, and overall quality should contribute to the bed’s durability.
Potential Drawbacks
Higher price point – The Saatva Rx’s luxury status and high-quality construction will drive up its price. Before sales and coupons, a queen will cost you nearly $3,300.
Not the best motion isolation – With a lot of bounce, the Saatva Rx doesn’t lend itself well to dampening movement across the mattress surface. Light sleepers who share the bed may want to consider an all-foam mattress.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Rx

Customers on Saatva’s website have awarded the Saatva Rx 4.8 out of 5 stars on average. The bed has around 50 reviews, praising the bed for helping with chronic back and neck pain, with only a few mentioning drawbacks such as lackluster edges.

Why the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Back Sleepers

If you’re a back sleeper seeking a mattress fit for a king, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt model may be the answer to your wishes. The brand’s proprietary TEMPUR® material is known for providing excellent pressure relief and an iconic “hugging” feel which should help cushion a multitude of problem areas for back sleepers, while the rest of the bed’s support layers keep you properly lifted.

This mattress comes in three different firmness options, including Soft, Medium Hybrid, and Firm. The varying firmness choices are excellent for customization, so you can tailor your bed to suit your preferences.

What’s the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt Made Of?

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt line is available in Soft and Firm, as well as a hybrid option in medium. The layers differ based on which model you choose.

Dig Into the Layers of the Mattress

  • Ventilated Top Layer. In the Soft model, this breathable layer is made up of the brand’s premium cushioning TEMPUR-Material™. For the Firm model, it’s a layer of Advanced Relief® material, which relieves pressure buildup with ease.
  • Comfort Layer. The above layers are swapped: the Advanced Relief® material acts as the main comfort layer of the Soft model, while the iconic TEMPUR-Material™ is found in the Firm’s comfort layer.
  • 5-Zone Ergonomic Support Layer. The foundation of the mattress is zoned to provide the proper support for each area of your body so your spine stays in its proper alignment.

The medium hybrid LuxeAdapt differs in that it features a “hybrid material” layer in between the first two layers, and the support layer is made of double-stacked coils.

Our Take: Tempur-Pedic has remained a name in the mattress industry because of their proprietary TEMPUR® material that expertly cradles the sleeper’s body. The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt line ups this game by keeping support in mind, so you get all the conforming foams with just the right amount of lift.

Pros & Cons

What We Liked
Plenty of options – The customization options are great for finding what feels most comfortable to you. While some might enjoy the extra plushness of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Soft, combination sleepers may enjoy the added responsiveness the coils in the Medium Hybrid provide.
Advanced pressure relief – Tempur-Pedic takes pride in the Adapt line for its—you guessed it—adaptability. The TEMPUR® material reforms and even softens or firms up to cushion your unique shape for relief around problem areas.
Potential Drawbacks
Pricey – The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt will cost you over $4,000 for a queen mattress, making it the most expensive option on this list.
Short trial – Tempur-Pedic only offers a 90-night sleep trial for their mattresses, shorter than the industry standard of 100 nights—and it seems even more lackluster when compared to the full year that some other companies offer.

Customer Reviews of the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt

Customers on the Tempur-Pedic website rate the TEMPUR-Adapt line a 4.3 out of 5 stars in over 10,400 reviews. One negative aspect of the mattress, as reported by some customers, is its relatively high price, while a notable pro mentioned by customers is its exceptional pressure-relieving comfort.

Why the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Couples

If you’re looking to splurge on a fancy mattress for a luxurious night’s sleep, the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate has you covered. Strong coils, plush foams, and vents along the side make up the bed’s considered design to ensure you sleep soundly, staying lifted and cool throughout the night as you benefit from soft cushioning.

The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate isolates motion like a pro and has strong edges, making it great for restless couples who want to make full use of their bed’s surface area. It also has a decent amount of bounce for any nighttime activities.

What’s the Lux Estate Made Of?

The Lux Estate is available in two models: with or without a pillow top. The model without a pillow top is 14.5 inches tall and available in Medium, while the pillow top version is available in Soft, Medium, and Firm and is 16 inches thick.

Detailed construction details
  • Layer 1 – Quilted Top. First up is a quilted layer with soft-feeling Tencel™ to wick away moisture.
  • Layer 2 – Comfort Layer. Underneath, a layer of TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam gives the surface its pressure-relieving capability while also providing what Stearns & Foster calls a “weightless-yet-supported” sensation.
  • Layer 3 – Coil Unit. The coil unit of the mattress features proprietary IntelliCoil® springs, which are actually two types of coils nested within each other to provide double the support. A denser border of coils line the bed’s perimeter to keep edges strong and sturdy.
  • Layer 4 – Edge with Airvent System. Finally, the outer sides of the mattress are outfitted with vents to allow air to escape, adding to the overall breathability of the bed.

Our Take: “The Stearns and Foster mattress is known for its balanced feel, combining support and comfort. It offers a plush and supportive surface, which may be preferable for couples who appreciate a more traditional feel and a balance between cushioning and support.” – Sydney, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Pros & Cons

What We Liked
Supports and relieves pressure – We tested the medium pillow top model and found it at a 6.5-7 out of 10, so it’ll be on the firmer side—but still with a pressure-relieving sink from the TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam, which was designed by the iconic mattress brand Tempur-Pedic. This balance should work for a variety of sleepers.
Strong coils – Despite the sink you’ll get from the plush top, the IntelliCoil® coils underneath will keep you lifted. Sydney noted that they prove “provide outstanding comfort and support that lasts.”
Potential Drawbacks
Hefty – This bed weighs over 100 pounds, and customers noticed it. Many buyers warned that it was difficult to move on their own.
High price – Luxury features means a more luxurious price, and that’s certainly the case for the Lux Estate. It’ll run you around $3,000 for a queen.

Customer Reviews of the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate

The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate rates 4.4 stars out of 5 on Stearns and Foster’s website from around 700 reviews. Customers appreciate the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate for its luxurious comfort and high-quality materials, but some report that its heavy weight makes it difficult to move or rotate.

Considering that luxury mattresses are made with high-quality materials and top-notch craftsmanship, they will cost more than most mattresses on the market. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t find one at a reasonable price. Depending on the size and exact model, you can expect to pay $1,500-4,000 on average for a luxury mattress.

What to Consider When Shopping for a Luxury Mattress

Trial

As mentioned earlier, having a good risk-free trial makes it easy to test out a mattress before committing to buying it. Typically among high-end brands, you can have anywhere from 90 to 365 nights, depending on the company. For example, top brands such as Saatva and Nectar give you a full-year trial period. Sometimes, you may have to keep the bed for at least 30 nights before returning it, though.

What Makes a Good Trial and Warranty?

A good trial and warranty are lengthy, which means at least 90 days for the trial and 10 years for the warranty. However, it’s not rare that high-end brands include a full-year trial and even longer warranties of 15+ years. Some luxury brands even have forever/lifetime warranties. A great trial and return policy also means no return fees and, in some cases, the company may pick up the mattress for you.

Warranty

In most cases, luxury beds have longer warranties that last 10 to 15 years, though some come with lifetime warranties. That said, a lifetime warranty isn’t necessarily better than a 10 or 15-year deal since many mattresses last around 10 years.

A lengthy warranty can be a good indication of a mattress’s expected lifespan and overall durability. If a company is confident in their product, they will usually include a longer warranty.

Type of Mattress

Innerspring Mattresses

An innerspring mattress’s support comes from the coils inside, which are usually made from steel. The section housing the coils is covered with a comfort layer, so you don’t feel the coils through the fabric.

When coils are individually wrapped — rather than interconnected — it’s less likely you’ll feel someone else move on the bed. Typically, the more coils (or the right amount at a proper gauge), the more support you’ll enjoy.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine a coil base with upper layers made of a variety of foams. They are called hybrids because these mattresses take elements from innerspring and memory foam or latex mattresses and blend them into one.

Many luxury mattresses are offered in hybrid models and can appeal to lots of sleepers because they offer the support of innerspring mattresses with the gentle cradling of foam.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses typically feature an all-foam structure, with memory foam on top and denser poly foam layers further down for support. Memory foam is fantastic for pressure relief and motion isolation, but basic memory foam beds can often run hot. Luxury memory foam models often feature advanced cooling capabilities so that sleepers can enjoy memory foam without worrying about getting too hot.

Latex Mattresses

Latex can be natural or synthetic (made from petroleum). This is a popular mattress type because of the material’s great support, responsiveness, and durability. Latex, particularly organic latex found in eco-friendly mattresses, would be considered a more luxurious product. These beds are often more expensive, but their durability makes them longer-lasting.

What We Test When Looking at a Luxury Mattress

Sleeping Position

Our testers test each sleeping position to make sure each mattress fits the right sleeper
Back Sleepers

Back sleepers typically prefer a medium-firm mattress that will help keep their spine well-aligned while providing pressure relief around their lower back and shoulders.

Stomach Sleepers

Folks who sleep on their stomach need to keep their hips elevated to help prevent lower back pain, which is why firmer, highly supportive mattresses are generally more appealing to them.

Side Sleepers

As for side sleepers, softer mattresses can often be a good fit for them because they put a lot of weight on their shoulders and hips, and mattresses with more cradling can help relieve that pressure.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers need a mattress that can adapt to their body in different sleeping positions. For this reason, they often go for medium or medium-firm beds since these offer the most universal feel.  Also, these sleepers often need a bit of bounce to help them switch positions without feeling stuck in the mattress.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

Lightweight Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)

Petite sleepers will likely prefer a softer bed that cradles them and helps with pressure relief, though some may enjoy a medium or medium-firm bed for back and/or stomach sleeping. My colleague, Loren Bullock, is our resident lightweight tester, so we include her feedback in our reviews as well.

Average Weight Sleeper (130 – 230 pounds)

Sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds can enjoy many mattresses, but we’d suggest staying within the medium firmness range. However, some average-weight stomach sleepers might like firmer beds. I’m an average-weight sleeper myself, and our reviews highlight my experience in each position for this weight group.

Heavyweight Sleeper (Over 230 pounds)

Heavier people typically sleep better on a firmer mattress that can support their weight. Many top brands have also made a concerted effort to better cater to plus-size sleepers by making quality beds specifically for their body type. Our teammate, Spencer Bland, provides feedback as our plus-size tester in our reviews.

Firmness

Brands and experts usually rate firmness on a 1-10 scale, and we do this here at Sleep Advisor as well. A rating of 10 would mean the bed is as hard as sleeping on the floor.

Typically, mattresses are ranked as either soft, medium, or firm. The right firmness level for you will depend on the position you sleep in and your body weight. Firmness reflects the overall feel of the mattress, and although it can influence support, it’s important to note that they are not the same.

Cooling / Temperature Regulation

The temperature results for the Best Cooling Luxury Mattress, the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite.

Luxury beds often have temperature-regulating capabilities in their design. Innerspring, hybrid, and latex models often sleep cooler since coils foster airflow, and latex is naturally temperature-neutral. Standard memory foam often traps heat, but many manufacturers now infuse the foam with gel and other cooling materials to help prevent heat accumulation.

When we test for cooling, we first take the initial surface temperature of the mattress. Next, we lie on the mattress for at least five minutes, after which we take the surface temperature again. We then lie for another five minutes and check the temperature a third time to see if it goes up and by how much. We think good cooling is when the temperature doesn’t increase significantly (at most, 5 or 10 degrees).

Motion Isolation

If you sleep with a partner or pet, a luxury mattress with good motion isolation will be useful. Beds that prevent motion transfer help keep co-sleepers from being disturbed by the movements of their bedmate.

The density of memory foam does an excellent job of absorbing motion and can be a great choice for couples. If you prefer a bed with coils, look for a hybrid with memory foam and individually wrapped coils since these will help isolate motion better.

Our motion isolation test involves using a seismograph app to monitor movement when someone moves around on the bed.

Nolah Original motion isolation testing

Bigger waves on our seismograph reading mean more motion is picked up, while smaller waves mean the bed absorbs most of the movement. We also have team members lie side by side to see how much movement they feel when the other person moves.

Sex

Sexually active couples often enjoy responsive and bouncy mattresses that allow them to reposition more easily. Latex has great responsiveness and snaps back to its original shape after weight is applied to it, which can prevent people from feeling stuck in the bed during sex. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses can provide good bounce, which may enhance sexual movements.

Pressure Relief

For many people, a luxury mattress should help eliminate aches and pains. This is where pressure-relieving materials can help.

Luxury mattresses often have better pressure-relieving capabilities due to higher-quality materials and construction, such as premium memory foam and latex, two materials that often do well at pressure relief.

When we test for pressure relief, we use a pressure map with all three testers representing each body weight/type. They switch between side and back sleeping on the map, which then shows pressure buildup via red, yellow, blue, and green. Red and yellow show pressure buildup, while blue and green indicate good pressure relief from the mattress.

Edge Support

Edge support is how well your mattress supports you when sitting or lying on the far perimeter of the bed. If your mattress lacks edge support, it can affect how easy it is to get in and out of bed, as well as how much of the surface area can be utilized for sleeping. Edge support is important for many people, including couples, because it allows them to use the entire surface of the mattress. In many cases, luxury mattresses have good edge support thanks to some type of reinforcement, whether it be high-density foam or high-gauge coils along the perimeter.

Nolah Signature All-Foam Hybrid edge support

When testing for edge support, we sit on the side of the bed for a minute, tying our shoes. Then, we lie at the edge for another minute, after which we assess the amount of slipping and sagging for each test. Great edge support means little to no slippage and sagging when lying or sitting on the edge of the bed.

What Can Affect the Price of a Mattress?

When shopping for a luxury mattress, you will want to keep in mind the factors that can affect the overall cost. Some of these include:

– Types of materials (organic, handmade)
– Number of layers
– Proprietary materials or technologies
– Cooling and other specialty features
– Shipping costs
– Discounts/sales
– Where it’s purchased (online or in a retail store)

Pros and Cons of Owning a Deluxe Bed

Luxury Mattress Pros

  • Your bed can offer support longer than cheaper products.
  • High-class beds usually have interesting features such as temperature control. These features are ideal, especially when two people with different preferences share a mattress.
  • Healthier sleeping when organic materials are used. This can have a positive effect on allergies.
  • Many luxury mattresses do their best to eliminate toxic substances.
  • Longer warranty periods.
  • Enhanced comfort and support to help with issues like insomnia, back pain, or joint pain

Luxury Mattress Cons

  • Higher price point
  • Additional features may take a little while to get used to. It could take time to find the perfect fit and settings that suit you or your sleeping partner.

What Makes a Mattress Luxury?

A luxury mattress goes above and beyond in its design, which is then reflected in its performance.

For example, luxury beds can include eco-friendly and hypoallergenic materials, such as organic latex or cotton. They may also have proprietary materials specially made by the company. On top of that, luxury mattresses have specific features you might not be able to find in standard beds. For example, they may have a cool-to-the-touch cover, a reinforced perimeter, and a lengthy warranty and trial.

Is a Luxury Mattress Worth the Cost?

Yes, a premium mattress is worth it if it boosts your sleep quality and matches your habits. A good luxury mattress should be more than some pretty padding — it should incorporate top-notch materials and features that directly impact how well you sleep.

How will you know if you’ve found the right luxury mattress for you? Consider whether you’re experiencing the following benefits:

  • Less joint pain: Your joints hurt when they endure too much pressure or they’re positioned in a way that causes strain. A proper mattress supports your joints and guards against these scenarios.
  • Less irritation due to allergies: A deluxe mattress should guard against dust mites and allergens. Many are made with hypoallergenic and antimicrobial materials.
  • More customization: Many luxury mattresses offer multiple options in terms of their firmness, height, cooling features, and more. If you’re paying a bit more for your bed, you should be able to ensure it meets your specific needs.
  • More and better sleep: When your mattress provides both the support and cushioning that allows your body to fully relax, you’ll experience deep, rejuvenating rest.

Other Ways to Make Your Sleep Luxurious

  • Add luxury sheets – Luxury sheets, such as cashmere, bamboo, or organic cotton, are an excellent way to elevate your sleep and make it more luxurious.
  • Customize the feel with a topper Mattress toppers are another way to make your sleep space more luxurious, especially if they’re made from high-quality latex or memory foam.
  • Get luxury pillows – Look for high-quality pillows made with cozy materials like down and memory for enhanced comfort.
  • Layer your bedding – Apart from having luxurious bedding, you want to make sure you’re layering it well, starting with a fitted sheet, a top sheet, and a cozy duvet or comforter.
  • Diffuse essential oils – Some people find diffusing essential oils, such as lavender, helps them fall asleep.
