Best Mattress for Side Sleepers (2024) – Expert-Tested

If you’re a side sleeper, you’ve probably woken up with a sore hip or shoulder after sleeping on a mattress that felt too firm. These “sharper” joints need a lot of cushion to feel comfortable—and a stable support system so one part doesn’t sink much more than the other.

Finding that exact balance can be a challenge. Thankfully, as Sleep Advisor’s Lead Product Tester, I lay on more mattresses in a month than most folks will in a lifetime.

My team and I scouted the best beds for side sleeping by focusing on three key components: pressure relief, support, and firmness. These beds should both cradle and lift your joints so that you can snooze on your side without stress.

What’s the Best Mattress for Side Sleepers?

The Helix Midnight won the title of Editor’s Pick because it was designed for side sleepers in particular—and it received perfect 5 out of 5 scores for both pressure relief and support in our testing studio.

Its hybrid construction pairs strong springs with soft upper foams, resulting in a bed that should swaddle your hips and shoulders while holding your spine straight.

How We Chose the Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers

My fellow testers and I thoroughly evaluate every mattress that comes through our testing studio. We grade them across many general performance categories, but for this roundup, we focused on what matters to side sleepers in particular.

Additionally, I reached out to our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, for his insight on how side sleepers can achieve maximum comfort on a given bed.

Methodology Image - Sleep Advisor
That’s me, Julia Forbes, in the Sleep Advisor studio.

Advice from a Medical Expert

Dr. Raj Dasgupta is a quadruple-board-certified physician with more than 20 years of experience in the medical field. When asked what side sleepers should look for in a mattress, he emphasized a balance between soft, contouring materials and spine-aligning support.

“For side sleepers, the perfect mattress is all about cushioning, support, and keeping your spine aligned. Look for one that hugs your curves without feeling too firm. Make sure it isolates motion well, so your partner’s movements don’t wake you up.”

What We Want to See in a Mattress for Side Sleepers

Reliable Pressure Relief

When you lie on your side, your hips and shoulders are bearing the bulk of your weight across a relatively small surface area. They need a well-cushioned surface to help absorb all that pressure—otherwise, they’ll get sore from the strain.

We test a mattress’s pressure-relieving abilities by placing an electronic mat on the bed, then lying on top of it. The mat is connected to a machine that shows us a color-coded pressure readout. Blue areas indicate little to no pressure; green areas indicate very small amounts of pressure; yellow areas indicate some pressure; and red areas indicate lots of pressure.

Every bed on this list received at least a 4 out of 5 in the pressure relief category, and yielded pressure maps full of blue and green.

Support that Prevents Too Much Sinkage

While pressure relief is vital for side sleepers, support shouldn’t be overlooked. Without it, your hips might sink into the bed much lower than your shoulders, causing an awkward (and potentially painful) misalignment of your spine. You want enough lift from the bed’s support system that your spine stays in a relatively straight line from neck to tailbone.

Every bed below was awarded at least a 4 out of 5 in the support category.

A Cozy Firmness Level

Unsurprisingly, side sleepers often prefer a softer bed to a very firm one. We rate a mattress’s firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being incredibly soft and 10 being as hard as the floor.

Side sleepers should typically look for a mattress between 5 and 6.5 on this scale—that’s soft to medium-firm. If the bed is too plush, the risk of sinkage and a misaligned spine goes up. If it’s too hard, you won’t get the cushioning you need.

All of the beds on this list fall in this desired window of plush to medium-firm. Some have multiple firmness options, and we’ll generally recommend the softest model.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Helix Midnight

As one of many mattresses in Helix’s Core Collection, the Helix Midnight was created specifically for side sleepers. It has a balanced feel that preserves both support and a pillowy surface.

During testing, we saw blues and greens across every pressure map, as well as straight spines all the way from our necks to our tailbones.

It’s not an extremely soft mattress—it’s on the gentler side of medium-firm—but I felt just the right amount of cradling around my hips and shoulders.

With all this in mind, it’s no surprise that it earned our top spot.

“With perfect pressure relief and spine alignment test scores, we were massively impressed with the Helix Midnight’s performance for supporting side sleepers of all body types.”

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

Memory Plus Foam. Characterized as “a special Helix blend,” this top layer of foam is unique to the brand. Helix claims it has a higher density than traditional memory foams, which ups its durability. I can testify that it felt awesome around my shoulders and hips—I sunk into it a little bit, but not so deep that I felt swallowed up.

Helix Midnight Interior
You can see the thick layer of Memory Plus Foam at the top of the bed.
What Else Is Inside the Helix Midnight?

The Helix Midnight has five internal layers (plus a cover) and stands 11.5 inches tall.

  • Layer 1 – Cover.
  • Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. This layer should mold to your body and relieve pressure from the parts that bear the most weight.
  • Layer 3-4 – Helix Responsive Foam. Both have a medium feel, and they work together to deepen the mattress’s cradling effect while also adding crucial support.
  • Layer 5 – Coil Layer. The innerspring unit features pocketed coils that are reinforced on the long sides of the bed to keep the edges from buckling too much.
  • Layer 6 – Duradense Foam. A base layer of solid, reliable foam.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Great motion isolation for a hybrid – We have the Midnight a 5 out of 5 for its motion isolation, which is a rare score for a mattress with springs in it.
It’s priced affordably – Compared to other hybrids on the market, the Midnight is less likely to cause sticker shock. A queen is often available for around $1,000 when sales are running.
Cons
Below-average edges – Even with the reinforced coils, we didn’t feel very secure on the edges of this bed.
Too plush for stomach sleepers – When we laid down on our stomachs, we felt too much sinkage around the lower back and hips.

Customer Reviews of The Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic’s claim to fame is that it contains two innerspring units for enhanced support. This support system places special emphasis on lifting the lower back, which can play a big role in preventing back pain.

It’s important for side-sleeping, too, because you want your hips to be lifted enough that your lower back stays aligned with your upper back.

But all that support doesn’t mean that the Classic neglects the cushioning that side sleepers crave—its plush pillow top hugs pressure points like the hips and shoulders.

All three testers, including myself, felt like we were both lifted and cushioned in a comfortable ratio.

A pressure map from the Saatva Classic. (That red spot is an elbow digging in, not a fault of the mattress.)

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It does a great job of cushioning the body’s pressure points and giving you a cushy place to sleep on. It also works to keep the lumbar supported. The center of the bed has an extra support foam layer so you feel a little bit of extra light lift around your midsection.”

Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

3-inch Euro Top. The first layer of the Saatva Classic is a Euro top with an organic cotton cover and built-in comfort foam. It’s the layer that determines how firm your bed is—Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm—and it’s quilted to provide more support under the low back.

I’d recommend the Plush Soft or Luxury Firm models for side sleepers. While testing the Luxury Firm on my side, I felt a nice amount of buoyancy under my hips that kept my spine aligned, as well as cradling from the Euro top’s comfort foam.

Julia is testing Saatva Classic mattress
Me side-sleeping on that luxurious Euro top.
What Else Is Inside the Saatva Classic?

The Saatva Classic stands either 11.5 or 14.5 inches high, depending on which height you order.

  • Euro Top (3 inches). The bed begins with a Euro pillow top dressed in breathable organic cotton. The pillow top’s comfort foam should feel welcomingly soft even as its quilting firms up under your lumbar spine.
  • Lumbar Crown. A band of memory foam is positioned beneath the lower back for targeted support.
  • First Coil Layer. A set of pocketed “comfort coils” compress individually as pressure is applied. They’re also thicker in the lumbar area for added pushback.
  • Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. This specialized wire is located within the coil units and increases the resistance of the springs around the lumbar zone.
  • Second Coil Layer. A more traditional unit with interconnected coils for added durability.
  • Foam Rails. As for edge support, the Classic boasts a perimeter lined with firm, high-density foam.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Built to your specifications – Because you’re able to choose your desired height and firmness, your Saatva should feel as though it was constructed just for you.
Stable edges – Both lying and sitting at the edge, I felt completely secure when testing this bed.
Cons
It’s not exceptionally soft – The Classic does have two spring units inside, so side sleepers who prize a mattress that really sinks in might be disappointed.
No high-tech cooling materials – I felt like my body temperature was maintained throughout the duration of testing, but I wouldn’t say this is specifically a cooling mattress.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Nectar

The Nectar’s foam layers can feel particularly restful for side sleepers, as they absorb the pressure around the hips and shoulders without the sometimes-uncomfortable pushback of springs.

My joints felt very cushioned by the upper layers of this bed, and I was simultaneously reassured by the steadiness of the denser base layer.

It doesn’t have the same active buoyancy as a hybrid, but if you like to feel cozily nestled into your mattress, the Nectar is a great choice.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“You can sink into the bed easily from the top two layers, but still feel plenty of support—especially around the lumbar—from the firm, dense foam at the base. That’s not to say you’re sinking completely through the first two layers … They all work symbiotically.”

Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

Gel Memory Foam. This 2-inch comfort layer at the top of the mattress is an old standby for side sleepers. It sinks in and surrounds your hips and shoulders, “hugging” the shape of your silhouette to relieve pressure.

Nectar Mattress interior Sleep Advisor
The gel memory foam at the surface of the Nectar.
What Else Is Inside the Nectar?

The Nectar is 12 inches high and has three internal foam layers plus a cover.

  • Layer 1 – Cover. A breathable cover that helps to redirect body heat.
  • Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam (2 inches). This is the most plush layer in the bed, and it molds to your body’s silhouette to relieve strain and pressure.
  • Layer 3 – Responsive Foam (3 inches). This foam has a springier, more supportive feel.
  • Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Base (7 inches). A denser, durable foundation of foam.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Cozy but secure – The foams in the Nectar are comfortable and cushy enough to hug to the body, but the base won’t let you sink so much that your alignment is compromised.
Awesome motion isolation – If you sleep with a partner and move around a lot, the dense foam layers help ensure you’re not shaking them awake.
Cons
It’s not a cooling champion – In my opinion, foam simply isn’t going to sleep as cool as a hybrid mattress, or one with materials geared towards temperature regulation.
Not enough support for larger bodies – Foam alone is not going to provide enough support for plus-size sleepers.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar

With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Pressure Relief4.5/5

FirmnessMedium Firm to Slightly Firm (6.5-7/10)

Our Thoughts After Testing the DreamCloud Premier

Typically, side sleepers gravitate toward softer mattresses that prioritize pressure relief. But what if you’re a side sleeper that likes the reassuring feeling of a firmer foundation?

The DreamCloud Premier is an interesting mix: it has a slightly firm feel—I really waffled between giving it a 6.5 or a 7 out of 10—but lots of foam layers above its coil unit.

You can see in the pressure map readout that there’s a bit of pressure buildup around my shoulders, but I didn’t find it to be very noticeable. (Lightweight sleepers likely won’t feel it at all.)

Also, compared to the original DreamCloud model, the Premier has an additional inch of memory foam. That extra inch can make a big difference, and this bed did have a more cradling feel than its predecessor.

A pressure map of someone side sleeping on the DreamCloud Premier
A side sleeping pressure map from the DreamCloud Premier. Note the slightest bit of buildup around the shoulder; this will be more present for average- and heavy-weight folks.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It doesn’t sacrifice support for the extra cushion, and the extra padding works great for those with sensitive joints.”

Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

Four Distinct Foam Layers Above the Springs. For a hybrid, the DreamCloud Premier has more foam layers than average. This stack of specialized foams gives the bed a nice buffer between you and the coils. Each foam also fulfills a different function, so side sleepers get plush pressure relief as well as some springiness and support.

Lying on my side on the DreamCloud Premier.
What Else Is Inside the DreamCloud Premier?

The DreamCloud Premier stands 13 inches tall and has eight total layers.

  • Layer 1 – Cover. The bed begins with a cashmere blend quilted cover that sports a delightful cloud pattern.
  • Layer 2, 3 – Quilted Foam. Two layers of quilted foam, one soft and cushioning, the other for firmer support, make up the Euro top.
  • Layer 4 – Gel Memory Foam. A cooler foam layer relieves pressure as you sink into the mattress surface.
  • Layer 5 – Transitional Foam. A responsive, bolstering feel for promoting neutral spinal alignment
  • Layer 6 – Coil Unit. Individually wrapped coils with pushback that are thicker around the perimeter of the bed for edge support.
  • Layer 7 – Stability Base. This foundational layer of thick foam keeps the mattress stable.
  • Layer 8 – Bottom Cover. Features handles for easy transportation as it works to keep your mattress in place.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
A touch of luxury – Several testers were vocal about how much they loved this mattress’s cashmere blend cover: “it’s a small detail that adds major comfort and luxury to the mattress.”
Memory foam option available — If you want a softer version of this bed, you can order a coil-free variant (but it’s pricier).
Cons
Too plush for stomach sleepers – People who sleep on their bellies will probably need an even firmer bed.
Edge support didn’t wow me – Laying at the edge, I felt decently supported, but there’s major sinking while sitting.

Customer Reviews of The DreamCloud Premier

Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Our Thoughts After Testing the WinkBed

The WinkBed’s Euro pillow top has a dreamy, plush feel that’s perfect for side sleepers. But, as a hybrid bed, it also has both foam and coil enhancements that bring specialized support to the mix.

These elements make it an appealing choice for side sleepers who want more lift than an all-foam bed can provide.

“As someone who’s an exclusive side sleeper, I like that this cradles my body but it’s also supportive,” said one tester, Mark.

There’s a caveat, though: you’ll want to order the right firmness level for your body type. We tested the Luxury Firm, and as an average-weight sleeper, I felt very cushioned except for the slightest bit of pressure around my shoulder (you can see it on the pressure map to the right).

My pressure map from lying on the WinkBed.

I think lightweight and average-weight side sleepers should order the Soft model, whereas heavier folks will prefer the Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus models.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It’s bouncy, supportive, and cushy from the pillow top. It feels like a luxury hotel bed.”

Loren Bullock, Former Lead Product Tester

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

Gel-Infused Hypersoft Foam. The foam inside the WinkBed’s Euro top is labeled “hypersoft,” and the brand claims that it doesn’t hold onto heat like traditional memory foam does. If you’re a side sleeper, we recommend ordering the Soft version of the WinkBed, because you’ll get a full extra layer of this plush material to better cushion your hips and shoulders.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction
Investigating the top layers of the WinkBed, including the Hypersoft foam.
What Else Is Inside the WinkBed?

The WinkBed has a 13.5-inch profile and comes in four firmness levels, the last of which is intended for heavyweight sleepers: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus.

  • Cover. The cover is made of Tencel™, which is a breathable, moisture-wicking fabric produced from Eucalyptus wood pulp.
  • Euro Top. This Euro pillow top features soft, gel-infused foam. The gel within the foam should prevent too much heat buildup near the mattress’s surface.
  • Additional Foam Layers. After subsequent specialized layers of comfort foam, including a LumbarLayer™ that specifically lifts the lower back, you’ll reach the WinkBed’s coil unit.
  • Coil Unit. The pocketed coils are zoned to provide different amounts of resistance depending on their location. Coils beneath the shoulders will compress more easily for extra cushioning, whereas those beneath the lumbar spine will give more support.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
You can choose your firmness level – With four different firmness options to choose from, the WinkBed is one of the most customizable mattresses I’ve reviewed.
Sturdy edges – This mattress should be a good pick for people who find themselves sleeping all the way to one side.
Cons
You may feel motion transfer – This mattress might not absorb motion as well as an all-foam bed. That lifted, bouncy feel comes the expense of some motion isolation.
It’s somewhat bulky – We were impressed by how robust this mattress felt, but once we had it out of the box, we realized that moving it again would be difficult.

Customer Reviews of The WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Nolah Evolution

The Nolah Evolution is a memorably lofty mattress with all the right ingredients for side sleeping alongside a partner: great motion isolation, stellar edge support, and a balanced feel that starts with a plush surface, thanks to its soft and breathable foams.

After testing the Luxury Firm, all three testers (including myself) agreed that this bed offers stellar pressure relief, but that the Plush model might be even more cushiony for our shoulders.

However, one of our writers—Sosha Lewis—owns the Luxury Firm version and heartily recommends it for couples and side sleepers. She credits the bed’s motion-isolation capabilities with “saving her sleep marriage.”

Testing Studio Soundbite

“My personal favorite aspect is the pressure relief! As a middle-aged CrossFitter with a janky hip, this bed eases so much of my pain.”

Sosha Lewis, Senior Staff Writer

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

AirFoamICE™. Nolah created this special foam in response to many complaints about traditional memory foam. According to the brand, this foam is better at both pressure relief and temperature regulation, with a longer lifespan than similar materials. There are 2 inches of it below the Evoluton’s pillow top, and they help you to feel like “you’re melting into the bed,” said Sosha.

Nolah Evolution construction
Here, you can see the AirFoamICE™ layer near the top of the bed.
What Else Is Inside the Nolah Evolution?

At 15 inches high, the Nolah Evolution is an impressively thick mattress. It has eight total layers if you count its top cover, and comes in three firmness options: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm.

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. Made of organic cotton and ArcticTex™ fibers that help to redirect uncomfortable warmth.
  • Layer 2 – Pillow Top. A Euro pillow top quilted with soft, contouring foam. The quilting has high thermal conductivity to draw in and then diffuse heat through a surrounding vented gusset.
  • Layer 3 – AirFoamICE™ (2 inches). This is Nolah’s proprietary cooling foam. The brand claims that this material is measurably better at pressure relief and temperature regulation than memory foams, as well as more durable.
  • Layer 4 – High-Resilience Foam (2 inches). Another foam layer for added support.
  • Layer 5 – Transition Foam (1 inch). A denser, springier foam leads into the coil unit below.
  • Layer 6 – Innerspring Unit. The coils are divided into zones that give different levels of pushback to different areas of the body, thereby ensuring that the lumbar spine gets increased support while sensitive joints can sink a bit deeper.
  • Layer 7 – Base. An underlying layer made of recycled plant fiber gives the mattress a strong foundation.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Zoned springs – With coils that compress more readily underneath the shoulders and hips, the Nolah Evolution feels like a natural fit for the body.
Readily responsive – Even though this is a soft bed, its foams reform quickly and easily. I found it easy to reposition myself.
Cons
Lots of layers mean a higher price – The Evolution is stuffed with proprietary materials and stands taller than most of the mattresses I review; it makes sense that it’s a little more expensive than your average hybrid.
Somewhat bulky – Once we had it out of the box, we realized that moving it again would be difficult.

Customer Reviews of The Nolah Evolution

The Nolah Evolution rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Nolah’s website. Customers frequently commend the Nolah Evolution mattress for its exceptional pressure relief and cooling properties, but some have observed that it may produce slight off-gassing upon unboxing.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Bear Elite Hybrid

The Bear Elite Hybrid is often billed as a great bed for athletes, but it also works for side sleepers who simply run hot.

It performed well during our temperature test, which saw its surface temperature rise by only ten degrees after we laid down on top of it. There’s phase change material in the cover, and it’s definitely doing something.

As for pressure relief, our only warning is that you’ll want to order the bed in the Soft firmness level if you have shoulder pain. Loren and I could sense a tad of pressure buildup around our shoulders on the Medium version, but a plusher surface should take care of that.

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

Copper Memory Foam. This memory foam molds to your shoulders and hips while helping the mattress to stay cool. The copper inside it resists heat as well as bacteria—so you get a bonus antimicrobial effect from this foam, too.

Bear Elite Hybrid mattress construction
The copper-infused memory foam is the top foam layer here, just above the green foam.
What Else Is Inside the Bear Elite Hybrid?

The Bear Elite Hybrid is 14 inches high and has five main layers, including its top cover. It’s available in three firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm.

  • Layer 1 – Cover. At the top, a hand-quilted cover boasts PCM (phase change material) that helps with offloading excess heat. For an extra fee, you can also add Celliant®, a performance textile that may assist with muscle recovery after a day of movement.
  • Layer 2 – Copper Memory Foam. This foam contours to the shape of your body while the copper inside it promotes cooling and guards against bacteria buildup.
  • Layer 3 – Dynamic Transition Foam. This layer of dynamic transition foam serves as a comfy buffer between you and the innerspring unit below.
  • Layer 4 – Coil Unit. The coils are individually wrapped and zoned for targeted levels of support across different regions, including a boost beneath your lumbar spine. They’re also reinforced along the perimeter of the unit for edge support.
  • Layer 5 – Foundation. Finally, a layer of high-density foam acts as the base of the bed.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Plusher than its predecessors – I try not to overuse the phrase “cloud-like” when talking about mattresses, but this one deserves it! It feels much more cushioning than other Bear beds I’ve tested.
Tested for safety – The Bear Elite Hybrid holds UL GREENGUARD Gold Certification, a credential that guarantees it doesn’t contain certain unhealthy substances and has suitably low emissions of potentially harmful chemicals.
Cons
Motion isolation is just average – I gave this bed a 3.5 out of 5 for its motion isolation. It’s not terrible, but you can feel some jostling when someone gets in and out of bed next to you.
Celliant® costs extra – Celliant® is a textile that allegedly helps your muscles to recover by converting your body heat to infrared energy. It used to be included in the bed’s cover automatically, but these days you’ll need to pay a fee if you’d like to add it.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid

According to Bear’s website, the Bear Elite scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

Like a few other hybrids on this list, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is available in multiple firmness levels (Soft, Medium, and Firm, to be exact). We tested the Medium version, and it honestly felt quite soft to me—about a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where a 6.5 is classified as “medium-firm.”

I felt remarkably lightweight on top of this mattress, and all my pressure points were swaddled nicely. My hips, however, felt especially buoyant, and I’d definitely recommend this bed for someone with aches and pains in that region.

Mark, an exclusive side sleeper, was also pleased. “I really like when I lay down on my side on this bed,” he said, adding that “it doesn’t sacrifice support or pressure relief.”

“That pillowy surface is putting in the work, because as soon as you lie down it responds to hug around you softly.”

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

Supreme Response Comfort Foam. Brooklyn Bedding calls this foam “hyper-elastic,” and in practice, that means it reforms back to its original shape very fast. It’s soft and cozy, but it doesn’t hold onto an imprint of your body like older memory foams.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid construction
Supreme Response Comfort Foam sits just beneath the surface of the bed, followed by VariFlex™ Foam.
What Else Is Inside the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has five layers that stack up to a height of 11.5 inches. The thickness of each layer depends on which version of the bed you order (Soft, Medium or Firm).

  • Layer 1 – Quilted Top. A breathable quilted top that stays taut and cozy, rather than retaining your body impressions.
  • Layer 2 – Supreme Response Foam. This layer reforms around your silhouette each time you change position.
  • Layer 3 – VariFlex™ Foam. This material enhances the support beneath the comfort foam and serves as a transitional layer between the upper part of the bed and its coil unit below.
  • Layer 4 – Coil Unit. The 8-inch springs in the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid are individually wrapped and stronger around the mattress’s perimeter. They’re anchored by a high-density foam base.

For an additional fee, you can outfit this bed with a GlacioTex™ cooling cover and pillow top, which should contribute to both temperature regulation and overall plushness.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Affordably priced – During sales, you can find this hybrid priced at less than $1,000 for a queen size.
Very responsive – The springback on this bed is instantaneous and, frankly, fun.
Cons
Motion isolation – This bed did not cancel out motion at all. If you’re a light sleeper who shares your bed with a partner, be aware.
Edge support – I didn’t think the edges on this hybrid were especially strong, especially when sitting on them.

Customer Reviews of The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Titan Plus Luxe

Sometimes, mattresses designed for plus-sized people end up feeling too unyielding for side sleepers. But the Titan Plus Luxe is different—it preserves the soft, cushy upper layers that side sleepers need as well as the strong support features that are necessary for larger bodies.

Our plus-size tester Sean was very impressed by this balance: “If you’re a heavier or extra-tall individual like myself, the Titan Plus Luxe mattress is your best friend … if mattresses could be best friends.”

I’m an average-weight sleeper, and I also appreciated how pillowy the top of this bed was, juxtaposed with the reassuring amount of support from underneath.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It was soft, but not too soft. I never felt like I was stuck or that I was sinking into the bed. Even better, this had all the support I’ll ever need from a bed.”

Sean, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Our Favorite Feature for Side Sleepers

TitanFlex™ Foam. Touted as a pressure-relieving foam with the springiness of latex, the TitanFlex™ foam at the top of this bed gives side sleepers a soothing surface for their hips and shoulders. It bounces back into shape quickly, too, so it shouldn’t hold onto body impressions.

Brooklyn Bedding Titan Plus Construction from the lab
A layer of TitanFlex™ foam sits at the very top of the bed.
What Else Is Inside the Titan Plus Luxe?

The Titan Plus Luxe has five layers that add up to 13 inches of height.

  • Layer 1 – Quilted Top (1 inch). A quilted top outfitted with gel foam. helps to keep the surface of the bed cool and makes for a welcoming, plush feel.
  • Layer 2 – TitanFlex™ Foam (2 inches). This layer contours to the body while also maintaining a useful degree of responsiveness.
  • Layer 3 – Energex™ Transition Foam (1 inch). A layer that supports the above comfort foams and segues into the bed’s coil unit.
  • Layer 4 – Coil Layer (8 inches). The mattress’s durable coils are individually encased. They’re stronger around the perimeter of the bed for increased edge support.
  • Layer 5 – Base Layer (1 inch). The mattress is backed by a foundation of high-density foam.

General Pros & Cons

Pros
Cozy for all body types (and couples) – “With its traditional medium firmness, both partners, regardless of body types, should find their sleeping needs satisfied,” said Sean.
Responsive and motion-isolating – The springier foams in this bed, combined with its coil unit, mean that you can adjust easily without shaking the whole mattress.
Cons
It’s not the softest bed on this list – “This still may be too firm for some folks,” Sean cautioned. I agree—although it has more plushness on top than the Titan Plus, the Titan Plus Luxe felt more medium-firm than truly soft.
It’s a heavy mattress – We noticed that the Titan Plus Luxe was a bit difficult to move around in our testing studio.

Customer Reviews of The Titan Plus Luxe

Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

What Makes a Mattress Good for Side Sleeping? Key Considerations

Pressure Relief

Side sleeping causes a buildup of pressure around two key areas: the shoulders and hips. The downward force that side-sleeping exerts on these relatively small zones can lead to discomfort and pain.

Therefore, a bed that suits side sleepers needs to be excellent at pressure relief. Its comfort layers should absorb the pressure from these “pointy” parts of the body, resulting in a feeling of relaxation rather than strain or soreness.

WinkBed pressure relief testing
Using a pressure map on the WinkBed, which scored a 4 out of 5 for pressure relief.

At Sleep Advisor, we measure how well a mattress relieves pressure by using a tool called a pressure map. It looks like a large, black mat that we unroll and place on the bed. When one of us lays on top of it, sensors inside the mat produce a color-coded image of the person’s silhouette.

The colors tell us where pressure is concentrated: Blue areas on the pressure map signify little to no pressure. Green areas mean there’s a tiny bit of pressure, but not much. Anything on the yellow-orange-red spectrum, on the other hand, indicates a noteworthy buildup of pressure.

Helix Midnight Pressure Map

Above is the pressure map for the Helix Midnight. You can see that the majority of it is blue and green, with one concentrated yellow spot at the hip. That’s normal—the hips and shoulders will always be high-pressure areas—and this is a very impressive map from a side-sleeping perspective. It’s no wonder the Midnight is at the top of the list!

What About Contouring?

A mattress with a top layer that contours to your body can definitely help with pressure relief and feel great for side sleepers.

Contouring refers to a mattress material—usually foam—conforming to the shape of your body when you lie down. A mattress with high contouring capabilities will mold to your silhouette, almost embracing you as you relax into it.

Of course, different mattresses will have different levels of contouring prowess. Some will compress deeply and contour a lot, whereas others might be springier with less of a hugging feel.

Support

Even though side sleepers gravitate towards the softest mattresses, they have to be mindful of support. A bed’s support system is what keeps your body lifted and aligned, rather than dipping into uneven and uncomfortable angles.

When resting on your side, it’s easy for your hips or shoulders to sink deeply into the mattress. One part may sink more than the other, causing your spine to bend rather than stay in a relatively straight line. This kind of misalignment can lead to pain, especially if it’s happening night after night.

A quality support system—whether it’s made of springs or foam—will keep your spine level. For side sleepers, finding enough lift around the hips is especially important, as this area is most likely to sink too deep.

When we test mattresses, we pay attention to how aligned our spines look and feel. We make note of any inconsistencies in support, and only beds that provide the right amount of strength and buoyancy across all body types earn a 5 out of 5 in this category.

Firmness

Side sleepers also need to be mindful of mattress firmness, which is distinct from mattress support. (A soft bed can still have lots of support, and a firm bed can have too little!)

A bed that’s too soft will allow your body to press too deeply into it, throwing off your spinal alignment and placing more pressure on your joints. A bed that’s too firm will feel uncomfortable and unyielding around the shoulders and hips.

We rate a bed’s firmness from 1 to 10, with 1 being softer than a marshmallow and 10 being as hard as a rock. As a side sleeper, you’ll want to aim for a mattress on the softer side of our firmness scale—probably around 5 (skewing soft) to 6.5 (medium-firm).

We seldom recommend beds with a firmness level of 4 or below, just because they tend to be too soft for good spinal alignment.

However, everyone’s preferences are different! If you know that you like a firmer bed, or that you need lots and lots of cushion, you can still explore mattresses on either side of that window. Just be sure to prioritize that crucial balance of pressure relief and support for your shoulders and hips.

Type of Mattress

Mattresses made with foams and plush pillow tops lead the way in the pressure-relief department. For that reason, we recommend hybrid beds with cozy foam upper layers and all-foam mattresses for side sleepers.

Here’s a bit more about each of the most common mattress types:

Hybrid Mattresses

A hybrid mattress combines the reliable support of a coil system with upper layers of foam for pressure relief and added comfort. The type of foam in these beds varies, but side sleepers will likely prefer hybrids with high-quality memory foam layers on top.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam is often the material of choice for side sleepers. It contours well around the joints, and is known for its hug-like feel. If you’re a side sleeper looking at a memory foam bed, just be sure not to compromise on support or durability.

Latex Mattresses

Latex foam is becoming more commonplace in the mattress world. A more “natural” alternative to synthetic foams, it relieves pressure well and feels noticeably springy.

You’ll most commonly see latex foam in hybrid models, but there are some all-latex beds out there, too. It’s a great material for side sleepers, but it does cost more than more traditional materials.

Innerspring Mattresses

Traditional innerspring mattresses are not the best choice for side sleepers. They have significant support, but not a lot of plushness or cushion. If you like the buoyancy of coils, I recommend looking at hybrid beds with both innerspring units and upper comfort foams.

Side sleepers will find that their experience of a bed varies depending on their body weight.

Heavier side sleepers often prefer a firmer mattress because it will resist an unpleasant sinking feeling. They’ll also need a bed with a weight capacity that will comfortably accommodate them. That being said, they may still want an initially plush surface that cushions their shoulders and hips.

For average-weight side sleepers, the key is finding the right balance of softness and support. A slightly soft or medium-firm bed should strike this harmony nicely.

More petite side sleepers, on the other hand, will want to look at soft beds that make pressure relief their top priority. Lightweight people are very sensitive to unyielding surfaces, and may feel that a medium-firm bed is a bit too hard for them.

Edge Support

Because you’re lying on a narrow slice of your body, it’s easier for side sleepers (compared to back or stomach sleepers) to tip over the edge of the bed. You’ll want a bed with strong edges that don’t buckle too much under your weight—especially if you tend to migrate to the edge of the bed while you sleep.

At Sleep Advisor, we lie and sit on the edge of each mattress we test to see how its edges hold up under pressure. Most of the beds we’ve recommended here have an edge support score of a 4 out of 5 or above, with the Nolah Evolution and Titan Plus Luxe as top performers in this category.

Motion Isolation

Side sleepers may be more sensitive to movement than back or stomach sleepers, who distribute themselves more evenly across the bed. If you’re easily awakened by a partner’s fidgeting, then you’ll want a mattress that absorbs and isolates motion well.

We grade motion isolation in two ways: by moving around on top of the bed and seeing if other testers can feel lots of shaking, and by using a seismograph.

Testing motion isolation by having one person move around on the surface of the bed.

As we toss and turn on top of a mattress, the seismograph readout tells us how much motion is being transferred across the bed’s surface. Big, sharp peaks mean that motion carries easily, and a flatter line means you probably won’t feel too much.

The seismograph results for the WinkBed. This is a pretty average readout—we gave this mattress a 3 out of 5 in motion isolation.

The majority of the mattresses on this list got high marks in motion isolation, with three of them—the Helix Midnight, the Nectar, and the Titan Plus Luxe—netting perfect 5 out of 5 scores.

Accessories for Side Sleepers

Side sleepers can derive a lot of extra comfort from accessories that complement their choice of mattress.

Pillows

The best pillows for side sleepers have a high “loft” and a medium firmness. They should be tall enough to keep your head and neck in line with the rest of your spine as you snooze. A pillow that’s too flat may cause your head and neck to dip too low, potentially causing neck pain.

Side sleepers might also want to place an additional pillow between their knees to further promote healthy spine alignment. A firm pillow can prevent the collapse of the knee and hip joints, making the position more comfortable. Hugging a long body pillow with all four limbs can feel nice and cuddly, too!

Mattress Toppers

A mattress topper meant for side sleepers can up the plushness of your mattress by quite a lot. If you’re in need of some extra cushion, look for toppers that advertise their softness and pressure-relieving qualities. Thick, foam toppers that contour to your pressure points are your best bet.

Best Mattress for Side Sleepers FAQs

What kind of mattress is best for side sleepers?

Memory foam or hybrid mattresses (with thick foam comfort layers) are the best types of mattresses for side sleepers. They provide a cushiony, pressure-relieving surface for the hips and shoulders, and should have strong, even support layers at the base.

What mattress firmness is best for side sleepers?

Side sleepers generally need a softer mattress than back and stomach sleepers do. A plush to medium-firm mattress is the best fit for this sleeping position—just make sure that there’s enough support to complement the pillowy surface.

What is the best mattress for side sleepers with hip and shoulder pain?

Side sleepers with hip and shoulder pain should look for a mattress with lots of pressure-relieving foams at the top. These foams conform to and cradle your sensitive joints, and can help prevent further discomfort.

At the same time, however, you should make sure that the mattress has a strong enough support system to keep your spine level. If your hips or shoulders are dipping too low into the bed or sinking very unevenly, that could exacerbate your symptoms.

What is the best mattress topper for side sleepers?

Side sleepers benefit most from thick, foam mattress toppers that add lots of softness to a mattress. If your bed feels too firm, a topper provide more cushion for your shoulders and hips, relieving some of the pressure concentrated around these joints.
