What We Want to See in a Latex Mattress
Latex is a sought-after material, but the top latex beds distinguish themselves by having some (if not all) of the following qualities:
Non-Synthetic Latex Foam
Some mattresses mimic the properties of latex foam by incorporating a layer of synthetic latex. Synthetic latex foam is entirely man-made, with no part originating in the sap from rubber trees. Although it’s a more affordable alternative to latex foams sourced from nature, it won’t have the same benefits—and it will definitely have more chemicals in its composition.

My Take: I myself am a stomach sleeper, and I was really happy with the zoned support the Saatva Hybrid Latex offered me. My lower back and hips felt held aloft. No sinking, no back pain. To stomach sleepers, beds can often feel too soft or too firm, but this was just right.
What I Liked
- A pressure-relief star – I call this bed a “jello mold,” since it surrounds your body and conforms to your shape nicely. It makes for excellent pressure relief.
- White glove delivery – Saatva offers free white glove delivery on all of their mattresses. They’ll set everything up for you hassle-free, and even get rid of your old mattress at no extra charge.
Potential Drawbacks
- Poor motion isolation – The Saatva Latex Hybrid is pretty bouncy, but that comes at a price. I found that this bed didn’t stifle movement as much as I’d like, so I wouldn’t recommend it for couples who are light sleepers.
- Too firm for some – The Saatva Latex Hybrid is responsive and supportive, but might not cushion as well as typical memory foam options. Lightweight side sleepers especially may find this bed too hard for their needs.

What We Liked
- Soft but supportive – Coils and latex work together in this bed to ensure you’re feeling both supported and cushioned. Side sleepers and those with back pain should appreciate the offered relief.
- Multiple cooling elements – The Nolah Natural has plenty of breathable layers to keep it feeling temperature-neutral. From the breathable organic cotton and wool to the individually wrapped coils, its components encourage refreshing airflow.
Potential Drawbacks
- Sub-par motion isolation – What makes this mattress great for combination sleepers also makes it not-so-great for couples. The responsive surface doesn’t do much to mitigate motion transfer across the bed, so you’ll likely feel your partner’s movements on the other side.
- Not the best for stomach sleepers – The Nolah Natural, while supportive, is also on the softer side, and especially so for those who like to sleep on their stomach. Average-weight sleepers may find the mattress too plush, while heavier sleepers may sink in too far.

What’s the EcoCloud Made Of?
Stuart lovingly dubbed this bed a “freakin’ skyscraper,” since it’s a hefty 12.5 inches thick. Four layers stack up to reach that height: a cover, two latex layers, and an innerspring support system.
Look at the Mattress Construction
The cover is made from 100% organic cotton and sustainably sourced New Zealand wool. It’s breathable and protective, ensuring you stay cool while your mattress stays clean.
The 4-inch latex layer is composed of two textured sheets of Talalay latex, a naturally breathable material that will stay temperature-neutral throughout the night. Its hypoallergenic properties also prevent microbes and dust mites from disturbing a healthy night’s rest. Stuart said this layer helped “ease [his] body weight into the coils” below.

What We Liked
- Eco-friendly – The EcoCloud lives up to its name with organic and hypoallergenic components, to which I give two green thumbs up! It comes with a number of certifications that ensure high-quality, earth-friendly materials and ethical construction.
- Bouncy feel – If you’re someone who moves around in your sleep, you don’t want to end up feeling “stuck” in your mattress. Since Stuart found “a lot of bounce in this bed,” that shouldn’t be a problem. Combination sleepers should be able to toss and turn to their heart’s content.
- Affordable luxury sleep – When compared to similarly constructed luxury beds, the EcoCloud comes in at a more affordable price. You’ll get the most bang for your buck without sacrificing comfort, sustainability, or durability.
Potential Drawbacks
- Not great for foam lovers – If you like to be swaddled by your mattress, look elsewhere. After testing the EcoCloud, Stuart decided that “we’re not quite at a hug-level yet.”
- Some motion transfer – Light sleepers need stellar motion isolation so they won’t get woken up by partners or pets in the bed with them. The EcoCloud did okay during our motion transfer test, but we still saw some movement.

- Plenty of bounce – As expected, latex allows for the mattress to easily spring back in response to pressure or weight. You won’t feel “stuck” in this mattress when you try to move around on top of it.

Potential Drawbacks
- Motion carries – This bed, like most latex options, isn’t the best at isolating motion. You’re likely to feel your partner moving on the other side of the bed.

- Not enough pressure relief for side sleepers – Laying down on my side, I felt some pressure buildup around the hips. If you’re a side-sleeper seeking relief for your joints, memory foam might be a better fit.
- May be too firm for some – I personally ranked this bed as a 7.5/10 on the firmness scale, placing it on the firmer side. Its pillow top and overall bounciness keep it from feeling like a rock, but be aware if you tend to prefer plusher mattresses.

What Does a Latex Mattress Feel Like?
Latex feels soft and cushiony when pressure is applied but also immediately springy — it bounces back into shape very fast, unlike synthetic foams that sink and reform slowly.
Because of this bounciness, it won’t surround and cradle you like memory foam will. Instead, it should feel like it will readily and quickly move with your body as you change positions.
The specific type of latex and its density will also affect how it feels. Some latex layers feel firmer and more supportive than others. How Is Dunlop Latex Made?
To make Dunlop latex, liquid sap is harvested from tapped rubber trees. The collected material is then whipped up, poured into a mold until it is filled, and then heated in a vulcanization oven. How Is Talalay Latex Made?
