Our Emma Original vs. Emma Hybrid Comfort Bed Comparison for 2024

Emma burst onto the online mattress scene in 2015, with the aim of awakening people’s potential by enhancing their sleep. Founded in Frankfurt, Germany, the company now retails globally, beginning operations in the U.S. in 2019.

Today we’re comparing two of their offerings – the flagship, all-foam Emma Original and the Emma Hybrid Comfort

Both mattresses offer great value, cooling features, and a removable cover, but that’s where their main similarities end. Whether you’re looking for deep pressure relief, motion control, or high bounce, we’re here to help you choose the mattress that best suits your needs.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

Here at Sleep Advisor, we put both the Emma Original and the Hybrid Comfort to the test, evaluating their performance for side, back, and stomach sleeping with regard to pressure relief and support.

Along with those measures, we also looked at how each bed excels (or doesn’t) in other important categories like bounce, motion isolation, edge support, and cooling. In the case of this comparison, we then see how our findings of each mattress compare to each other.

For more on our testing methodology, check out our product review process.

Julia Forbes, our lead product tester, tests mattresses in Sleep Advisor’s testing facility.

Who I’d Recommend the Emma Original For

  • Side sleepers Side sleepers should particularly love the deep sinkage and enhanced pressure relief from the all-foam Emma Original. While the hybrid does offer a surprising amount of pressure relief, it has minimal sinkage, which isn’t great for side sleepers.
  • All-foam fans – If you prefer an all-foam mattress feel, the Emma Original should suit you better than the Emma Hybrid Comfort. With the Emma Original, you can experience deep pressure relief, minimal bounce, and low motion transfer, which foam models are known for.
  • Shoppers on a tight budget – Both mattresses are incredibly affordable, but the Emma Original is cheaper in all sizes, making it a great pick for shoppers with less money to spend.

Who I’d Recommend the Emma Hybrid Comfort For

  • Stomach sleepers – This mattress offers superior support for stomach sleepers thanks to its ergonomically zoned coil unit that keeps heavier areas – like the hips – lifted and in line with the rest of the spine.
  • Shoppers looking for a bouncy mattress – The Emma Hybrid Comfort is incredibly bouncy, making it a great choice for combination sleepers, sexually active couples, and people with mobility issues.
  • Heavier sleepers – With its sturdy coil unit and firm feel, we feel Emma’s hybrid mattress offers essential support for heavyweight sleepers, who may find themselves bottoming out on the all-foam model. However, while heavier stomach and back sleepers should feel comfortable, we think side sleepers will need more cushioning to avoid pressure buildup.

Comparing Emma Original vs. Emma Hybrid Comfort: Top Similarities

  • Removable cover – Both mattresses feature a removable cover that can be popped into the machine for easy washing.
  • Cooling foam – A layer of breathable Airgocell® foam sits at the top of each mattress. This foam has an air percentage of around 50 percent, which prevents heat and moisture buildup. While this should be fine for most sleepers, we think hot sleepers or those in warmer climates may prefer a dedicated cooling mattress.
  • Trial and warranty – A generous 365-night trial is offered with all Emma mattresses, as well as a 10-year warranty.

Comparing Emma Original vs. Emma Hybrid Comfort: Key Differences

  • Level of sinkage – The Emma Original provides a deep cradle for most sleepers while the Emma Hybrid Comfort offers very minimal sinkage. The former could appeal to side sleepers and back sleepers who like a more cushioned feel. Conversely, we think the latter is best suited to back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel and stomach sleepers.
  • Motion transfer – You’ll find superior motion control on the Emma Original, thanks to its thick foams and zero coils. We experienced some motion transfer with bigger movements on the hybrid but smaller movements were less of an issue.
  • Edge support – Our testers found the Emma Original to have average edge support, which is to be expected from an all-foam as they tend to be less secure around the perimeter than models with coil units. Couples who like to spread out may prefer the Emma Hybrid Comfort, which our lead tester, Julia, felt comfortable on when lying close to the edge. However, Julia found herself sliding off the hybrid when sitting on the edge, which may be an issue for those with limited mobility.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

Our firmness scale goes from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest. Our team ranked the all-foam Emma Original at a 5, which is medium-plush. The Emma Hybrid Comfort came in at a 7, making it firm.

Side sleepers could love the deep, pressure-relieving feel of the Original, though some back sleepers who like a deeper hug might also find comfort. However, we think most back and stomach sleepers will likely prefer the firmer support offered by the hybrid.

Support

Lead tester Julia, who is an average-weight sleeper, found the Emma Hybrid Comfort incredibly supportive, sharing that her spine felt lifted in all sleeping positions. This is thanks to the ergonomically zoned coils in the support layer.

The all-foam Original claims that it can support any sleeping position with its intuitive pressure relief, but we wouldn’t advise it for stomach sleepers, who may feel their hips sinking to an unhealthy depth unless they’re extremely lightweight.

Feel

Both mattresses arrive compressed in a box, and we experienced some off-gassing with both, though this went away after a few days. The Emma Original’s memory layer is placed under a layer of poly foam, but we found that we could still reap the deep cradling benefits.

Julia was surprised at the amount of pressure relief she got from the Hybrid Comfort, considering how firm it felt. The all-foam definitely felt more plush than the hybrid, which could appeal to side sleepers.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

During her testing, Julia felt completely aloft on the Emma Hybrid Comfort, experiencing very little sinkage. The Emma Original, on the other hand, had much more sinkage, offering a deep, pressure-relieving cradle.

If you’re looking for bounce, look no further than the Emma Hybrid Comfort. “It’s very bouncy,” shared Julia. “I bounced a lacrosse ball on the surface and it sprung right back up.” While the Emma Original’s memory foam cancels out any surface bounce, it does offer some pushback from the deeper layers, which should make it fairly easy to reposition, despite the deeper sinkage.

Comparing Motion Transfer

We found that the Emma Original excelled when it came to motion isolation; we couldn’t feel any movement when someone moved around on the other side of the bed. This is great news for light sleepers who share with a restless partner or pet.

The Hybrid Comfort didn’t perform as well in this area, which is to be expected as it has a bouncy coil unit. “I found that big movements, like getting in and out of bed, shook things up a bit,” explained Julia. “But small movements? It stifles just fine.” We think most couples should be fine on the hybrid, but sensitive sleepers should probably stick with the all-foam model.

Comparing Cooling

Both the Emma Original and Emma Hybrid Comfort feature a moisture and heat-wicking UltraDry® top cover. However, our testers reported that they didn’t find the cover particularly cooling.

The breathable Airgocell® poly foam at the top of each mattress has an air percentage of about 50 percent, allowing it to stay cooler than regular foam. The Emma Original also features a convoluted base layer, which allows for airflow, and the Hybrid Comfort’s coil unit increases breathability. Our team found the hybrid cooler than the all-foam, but we’d say that exceptionally hot sleepers would be better with a cooling mattress.
