An adjustable bed frame can completely transform your sleeping space. Instead of building a tower of pillows behind you for support while you read, you can elevate the top of your mattress for easy leaning. Or, you might raise your feet and head into a zero-gravity posture to enjoy pressure relief and a near-weightless feeling.
If you’re intrigued by these perks, you likely have a follow-up question: What’s the best mattress for an adjustable base? Well, you’ll need a mattress that’s able to flex along with the base as it moves, and that won’t lose any of its support or coziness in the process. Below, we’ve picked out several mattresses that pair well with adjustable bed frames.

How We Picked the Best Mattresses for Adjustable Beds
At Sleep Advisor, we test mattresses and bed frames in person, grading them across many performance categories so you can consider their strengths and weaknesses.
We have multiple testers try each product, and pay attention to how a bed’s feel varies for different body types and sleeping positions.
For this roundup, we judged mattresses primarily by how well they’d work with an adjustable base. We only looked at beds that we already knew were high quality, then narrowed down our list based on the following factors.
What Makes a Mattress a Good Match for an Adjustable Base?
A Profile that Can Flex
A mattress on top of an adjustable base should bend easily with the base’s movements. Typically, beds with this degree of flexibility aren’t too thick (around a foot or so is best) and aren’t traditional innerspring models. All-foam and hybrid beds are your best bets, here—so all the mattresses below are one of these two types.
Durable Construction
All that flexing and bending will put some added stress on your mattress. You’ll want to buy a bed with reliably sturdy components, or you might notice lasting impressions in the comfort foams and less resistance from worn-out coils. The beds on our list should be able to withstand a long-term partnership with an adjustable base.
Confirmation from the Mattress Brand
Usually, the mattress company will tell you if a certain bed is compatible with an adjustable base. Many mattress brands sell their own adjustable bed frames, too. For this roundup, we only selected beds that were given the green light for use with this type of frame.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Saatva Classic
The ultimate in versatility, there’s a Saatva Classic out there for almost everyone. Pair it with an adjustable base and you’ve got a completely personalized bedroom setup. Hence, this bed nabbed first place on our list.
You can order the Classic in your preferred firmness level: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm. The Firm version should be a solid choice for fans of a flatter, immediately spine-aligning bed, whereas the Plush Soft model will feel extra pillowy. On the Luxury Firm, I could feel the bed’s bracing lumbar support features while still nestling cozily into its pillow top.
The customization doesn’t stop there. You can choose between an 11.5-inch and a 14.5-inch profile for your Classic, but note that only the thinner version is compatible with adjustable bases.
Testing Studio Soundbite
“I [have] to shout out the tons of lumbar support. If you need a mattress that’s got your back, you need the Saatva Classic.”
Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
Important note: Shoppers hoping to place this bed on an adjustable frame should order the 11.5-inch model, as the 14.5-inch one won’t be pliant enough to move with the base.
As an established luxury mattress brand that sells its own adjustable base, Saatva has designed their flagship bed to flex easily into a wide range of positions. They describe it as compatible with their own adjustable frame and “most other adjustable bases.”
Who Will Like It?
- People with lower back issues – The Saatva Classic is a big proponent of back support, and includes exclusive Lumbar Zone® Technology in the bed’s center third to buoy this often-overlooked part of the spine. Even when on my back and stomach, my midsection felt perfectly lifted.
- Sleepers who like springy beds – Not many other mattresses incorporate two innerspring units into their design. The Classic should delight fans of traditional innerspring mattresses with its modernized approach to support and responsiveness.
- People who’d rather not unpack and lift a heavy bed – Saatva never compresses their mattresses into boxes. Instead, they deliver and set them up for free with their white glove delivery service.
Who Should Avoid It?
- Light sleepers who share a bed – The Saatva Classic’s innerspring construction does mean that motion transfer is more noticeable than with all-foam designs. You can definitely feel big movements on this mattress.
- People who sleep warm – The Classic’s coils do permit airflow, and its cover is breathable, but it doesn’t have a ton of dedicated cooling bells and whistles. I didn’t feel a notable change in temperature while testing it.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight’s medium-firm feel and supportive hybrid construction make it a natural choice for back sleepers. Our testers universally liked the mix of cushioning and lift they felt on this bed while lying on their backs—yes, even though it’s marketed to side sleepers!
Loren added that she was impressed by how well the Midnight isolated motion, even though it has an innerspring system. It earned a perfect 5 out of 5 in that performance category.
Testing Studio Soundbite
“[The Midnight] offers the perfect balanced medium feel—not too soft; not too firm. There is definitely a sense of overall support.”
Loren Bullock, Lead Product Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
Helix says that every single one of its mattresses—the Midnight included—is compatible with an adjustable base. It also makes its own model that you can order alongside the mattress. At 11.5 inches tall, the Midnight has a great profile for flexing with a base’s movements.
Who Will Like It?
- Side and back sleepers – The medium-firm feel of the Helix Midnight should have broad appeal. It’s the right blend of bracing and soft, and should cater to side and back sleepers in particular. As Emma put it, “The mix of comfort and support is just right.”
- Restless sleepers who share a bed – Even though it gets some springiness from its coils, the Helix Midnight doesn’t transfer too many ripples across its surface. “We were actually really surprised by how well it isolated motion,” Emma said.
Who Should Avoid It?
- Stomach sleepers – When Emma switched to lying on her stomach, she could feel her hips sink a little too much into the Midnight’s layers. “I’m still decently comfortable, but I might suggest a firmer mattress for exclusive stomach sleepers,” she said.
- People who want to feel hugged – If you prefer the deep, hug-like sensation that an all-foam bed offers, this hybrid model may not be for you.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Nectar
Nectar set out to introduce a memory foam mattress that improved upon traditional designs while retaining the foam’s coveted feel. The result is a mattress with an enviable cradle up top and a reliable support system below.
I’ve tested this bed multiple times, and I’m a big fan of the spinal alignment I get on my back and side from its deceptively simple construction.
Testing Studio Soundbite
“With the topmost foam layers made for pressure relief, I really like how this molds around the body.”
Julia Forbes, Lead Product Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
At 12 inches high with an all-foam construction, the bed has the right amount of malleability for an adjustable base. It also has a “shift-resistant lower cover” that should keep it from sliding too much as the base moves.
The Nectar is compatible with most adjustable bed frames, but the brand has also designed its own adjustable base to complement the mattress.
Who Will Like It?
- People with sore joints – The Nectar is known for its cozy memory foam, and our tester Emma confirmed that this bed provided “loads of pressure relief.”
- Light sleepers in a couple – The Nectar excels at motion isolation, keeping nighttime disturbances to a minimum even if you or your partner needs to get out of bed. Both Jill and Emma testified to the Nectar’s suitability as a shared sleeping space.
Who Should Avoid It?
- Heavy people and stomach sleepers – The foams in the Nectar might cause too much sinkage around the hips for these demographics. As Emma remarked, “I need a little bit more support in my hips to make sure that my back stays aligned.”
- People who sleep hot – With no springs to speak of, the Nectar can’t achieve the same amount of airflow as a hybrid bed. The gel infusions in the first foam layer can help to keep things chill, but as Jill said, “It didn’t provide as much cooling as we’d hoped.”
Customer Reviews of the Nectar
With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Our Thoughts After Testing the DreamCloud Premier
The DreamCloud Premier is a next-level version of the brand’s original hybrid mattress. The difference between the two beds comes down to the memory foam layers: the Premier has an additional inch of foam compared to the core mattress.
This extra cushion makes the bed far more suitable for side sleepers. When I tested the bed, the combination of foams at its surface really cradled my joints.
Testing Studio Soundbite
“The combination of memory foam and responsive coils work really well to keep your body comfortable and fully supported … [the mattress] has a medium-firm feel to it.”
Julia, Lead Product Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
DreamCloud says that their mattresses can be placed on any adjustable frame that they sell, “or a similar product.”
The Premier is 13 inches tall, so it may be slightly more resistant to flexing than a thinner bed, but it’s still compatible with an adjustable frame. Additionally, it has a “shift-resistant” cover on the bottom and handles that help with moving the bed.
Who Will Like It?
- People who like to feel lifted – Our testers gave this bed a 4.5 out of 5 in the categories of support and pressure relief. Such high scores mean that they felt both buoyed and cushioned by its construction—exactly what you’d want from a hybrid bed.
- People who move around in their sleep – The Premier’s bounce also earned a 4.5 out of 5. It’s a responsive bed that won’t make you feel sunken or stuck within its layers.
Who Should Avoid It?
- Sensitive sleepers in a couple – Big movements were very palpable to our testers as they interacted with this bed. If you’re a light sleeper who snoozes next to a restless partner, I wouldn’t recommend it.
- People who sleep at the edge – Sitting on the edges of the Premier caused the sides to sag quite a bit.
Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Premier
Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier has over 5,000 reviews, the majority of which are positive. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Our Thoughts After Testing the WinkBed
Loren described the WinkBed as the model hybrid mattress: bouncy, supportive, and yet cushy on the surface from the pillowtop. It’s also particularly considerate toward the lumbar region, and even includes a foam layer that targets the lower back specifically.
Under its comfort layers, a zoned coil unit provides the right amount of support to different parts of the body. With four firmness options to choose from—Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus—you’re likely to find a version of the WinkBed that meets your specific needs.
Testing Studio Soundbite
“The zoned Support really pops off here. There’s great weight distribution and alignment.”
Loren Bullock, Lead Product Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
Not all hybrids are bendy enough to work with an adjustable base, but thankfully, the WinkBed can pair with one just fine—the brand says that all of its mattresses are compatible with adjustable frames. Furthermore, its Euro top and 13.5-inch height should help you to feel cushioned in any posture.
Who Will Like It?
- Sleepers who sprawl – The WinkBed’s Extra-Edge™ Support System allows sleepers to stay comfortable and supported at the outermost edges of the bed. “I can roll right up to the edge of the bed without losing that supportive feel,” remarked tester Sean.
- People who appreciate handcrafted details – The fact that each bed is handcrafted means that you’ll be receiving a one-of-a-kind mattress with comprehensive detail work. This quality stood out to Mark, who has tested the WinkBed multiple times: “I really like that these are handmade, that they’re tufted, and that you lay down on it and you can really feel that pressure relief.”
Who Should Avoid It?
- Shoppers on a budget – The WinkBed may be priced a bit higher than other bed-in-a-box mattresses due to the care that goes into its construction.
- Sleepers who like cradling foam – There’s no memory foam in this bed, so fans of that particular material may want to look elsewhere. As Sean put it, “People who like to feel like they are sleeping in the bed may feel more like they are floating on top of this mattress.”
Customer Reviews of the WinkBed
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Nolah Evolution
One of our testers, Stuart, characterized this mattress as “packed with soft layers for plush relief.” “Packed” is indeed the right word—the Nolah Evolution stands out amongst other beds with its sizable 15-inch profile.
Inside that impressive height are proprietary materials, a zoned coil system, and cooling elements in almost every layer.
Testing Studio Soundbite
“My personal favorite aspect is the pressure relief! As a middle-aged CrossFitter with a janky hip, this bed eases so much of my pain.”
Sosha, Sleep Advisor Senior Staff Writer
Adjustable Base Compatibility
Even with a lofty 15-inch design, the Nolah Evolution is bendable enough to pair with an adjustable base. Nolah makes its own adjustable bed frames with a long list of bells and whistles, including massage motors and voice-activated controls.
Who Will Like It?
- Combination sleepers – The Nolah Evolution is both luxurious and versatile. It’s available in Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm versions, and its responsiveness allows for easy repositioning. As Stuart put it, “Even though it’s got some plush[ness] and sink to it, I was still able to move around and reposition easily without feeling like I was being sucked in by quicksand.”
- Couples – The reinforced edges not only make it easy to get in and out of bed, but they increase the surface area available for well-supported rest. “This is an excellent mattress for couples,” Stuart remarked. “You could build your house on Nolah’s edge support.”
- Hot sleepers – Those who run hot at night should appreciate the Evolution’s bevy of cooling features, which outnumber those of many competitors.
Who Should Avoid It?
- Shoppers trying to save – The Nolah Evolution is a bit more costly than other mainstream online mattresses, which makes sense given its thoughtful construction.
- People who don’t like heavy lifting – Due to the height and size of this bed, you may need some help maneuvering it once it’s been unboxed. Stuart echoed this point: “Make sure you have someone available to help you set this thing up, as it’s thicker than most of the mattresses we work with.”
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution
Earning a 4.9 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit. Customers appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its superior pressure relief, but some have mentioned that the edge support could be improved for a more consistent sleep surface.

The Bear Original is an all-foam bed with a twist: although its first layer of gel memory foam cradles the body, its construction gives it an overall firm feel. This is a great setup for sleepers with back pain, who need a hard-to-find combination of pressure relief and solidity.
Mark and Stuart, who both tested the mattress, enjoyed it best while resting on their backs and stomachs. They also praised its firmness for exceeding what they’d expect from a foam bed.
Testing Studio Soundbite
“It’s a little firmer than the typical all-foam mattress, which should make it a little bit more versatile for different kinds of sleepers.”
Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
The 10-inch profile and high malleability of the Bear Original make it an excellent match for an adjustable base. Bear makes its own adjustable bed frame, and generally recommends placing its mattresses on any kind of solid foundation except a traditional box spring.
Who Will Like It?
- Back and stomach sleepers – The firm feel of this bed make it an excellent candidate for back and stomach sleepers, as well as heavier side sleepers. Stuart is a combination sleeper, and he saw this bed’s firmness as an advantage.
- People who value an undisturbed surface – Stuart praised this bed’s motion-isolating abilities, and labeled it a “great option for couples.” Because the foam layers handily absorb movement, “it’s not likely you’ll disturb one another’s sleep.”
- Active folks and athletes – For an added fee, you can add a textile called Celliant® to this mattress’s cover. Celliant® may encourage localized blood flow and tissue recovery, desirable effects for anyone with a sore back or a strenuous exercise routine. Although the jury is out on how big a different Celliant® makes, we’re into the idea of a fabric that could help us recover from a tough workout.
Who Should Avoid It?
- Side sleepers – We had one of our exclusive side sleepers (Mark) test this mattress, and he wasn’t completely sold. “When I was laying on my side, it was maybe just a little bit too firm. I was comfortable, but I do think I would have a hard time sleeping on it overnight,” he said.
- People who rest on the edges of the bed – The foams in this bed are quite supportive throughout, but there’s no defined edge support system. Per Stuart, sitting on the very outside of the mattress does cause the edge to “buckle a bit.”
Customer Reviews of the Bear
On Bear’s website, the Bear Original has more than 10,000 reviews and an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its cooling features, yet some express concerns about a potential initial off-gassing odor.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
Because it comes in three different firmness levels, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is poised to please all kinds of sleepers. I tested the Medium version and found it very versatile, as well as surprisingly soft for a hybrid.
Its top two qualities were support—my spine felt perfectly aligned—and bounce, the latter of which is a big plus if you move around a lot in your sleep.
Testing Studio Soundbite
“The responsiveness plus three firmness options means it really works for everyone—especially combo sleepers.”
Julia, Lead Product Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
The Brooklyn Bedding is 12.25 inches tall and compatible with the two adjustable bases for sale on Brooklyn Bedding’s site. The brand says that any of their mattress models will work well on these bases, and we can infer that they will likely bend just fine on other adjustable beds, too.
Who Will Like It?
- Sleepers who want a softer hybrid – Even though I tried out the Medium model, I felt really cushioned by the top of this bed. It gave me a nice, light hug even as I still felt lifted by the springs beneath.
- People who like having options – The three available firmness levels allow you to customize this hybrid to your liking. I wouldn’t recommend the Medium to stomach sleepers—they should order the Firm version—but back and side sleepers should enjoy it.
Who Should Avoid It?
- People who don’t like springy beds – The bounce on this mattress is very palpable; its surface pops back into shape instantaneously. If you want more cradling and less responsiveness, a cushy all-foam bed is a better choice.
- Couples in need of motion isolation – I gave this bed a lackluster 2 out of 5 in the motion isolation category; we could really feel other testers’ movements across the surface of the bed.
Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Titan Plus
The Titan Plus is specially constructed for heavyweight sleepers, with durable layers that keep them well-supported for optimal comfort and spinal alignment.
Feel-wise, this is a particularly firm bed that balances sturdiness and coziness. Our plus-sized reviewer, Patrick, was quite taken with it: “Unlike many mattresses that I have tried, my weight is evenly distributed over this surface and I feel extremely comfortable.”
Testing Studio Soundbite
“Great lift and full-body support. No matter your body size, you don’t sink down too much and your spine stays in good alignment.”
Julia, Lead Product Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
This bed’s 11-inch thickness has enough flexibility to work well with an adjustable bed frame. In fact, Titan has two kinds of Ascension® adjustable bases for sale on its site.
Who Will Like It?
- Plus-size sleepers – This mattress is built for long-lasting, palpable support. The sturdy springs and foams collaborate to buoy you up rather than suck you in. “I definitely sink in a little bit, but this mattress feels supportive enough that I don’t feel stuck at all,” said Patrick.
- People who run hot – Gel-infused foam and springs that permit airflow mean that the Titan Plus stays chilled-out during the night. “If you sleep hot, you should sleep great on this mattress,” said our tester Emma. You can also choose to add a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover for extra cooling oomph, though it costs a tad more money.
- People who sleep near the sides – This bed’s signature support doesn’t cop out at the edges. “The edge to edge coils are super strong,” said Patrick. “if you like to spread out, strong edges are going to be a really nice advantage.”
Who Should Avoid It?
- Lightweight people – Although Patrick really enjoyed the feel of this bed, Emma, who weighs around 140 pounds, found it a bit too firm for her liking. This discrepancy is to be expected—as Patrick put it, “A lot of that firmness that [a lighter person] feels will be wiped away by a heavier individual as they allow their weight to sink into the mattress.”
- Foam fans – That first layer of memory foam will have a bit of give to it, but this isn’t a mattress that cradles you. If you’re looking to get hugged by your bed, we recommend exploring other options.
Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus
Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.

Our Thoughts After Testing the Birch Natural
If you need a new mattress for an adjustable base, and you’re interested in beds that incorporate organic materials, the Birch Natural should be a lovely fit.
It has a notable bounciness to it, which is great for combination sleepers, sexually active couples, and anyone who likes to reposition themselves during the night.
Personally, I loved the feel of the latex foam in this bed. It contoured around my body, but it was still dense enough that I felt held up and supported (moreso than I do with traditional memory foam).
Testing Studio Soundbite
“A perfect feel. The latex foam hugs my spine lightly. I don’t feel swallowed, but I do feel supported.”
Loren, Lead Product Tester
Adjustable Base Compatibility
According to the brand, the Birch Natural should work with “any adjustable base.” It’s 11 inches tall, so it should flex with the base quite nicely.
Who Will Like It?
- Sleepers who dig latex foam – Latex is the star of this mattress, and it brings pressure relief, bounce, and lift to the table. It responded to our movements quickly while sinking in just enough for comfort.
- People who shop green – This bed has undergone rigorous testing and earned multiple certifications that attest to the eco-friendliness of its materials, including recognition from GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), eco-INSTITUT, and GREENGUARD Gold by UL Environment.
Who Should Avoid It?
- Exclusive side sleepers – “It’s not the softest mattress when I’m lying on my side,” Stuart commented. If you tend to feel a lot of pressure buildup in your hips and shoulders, we recommend outfitting this bed with a soft topper.
- Light sleepers in a couple – The springiness of this bed can cause some motion transfer. If you sleep next to a partner, you may notice their movements during the night. Per Stuart, “If you’re looking for something that absorbs motion … you may prefer memory foam over latex.”
Customer Reviews of the Birch Natural
According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

How Do Adjustable Beds Work?
An adjustable bed (also called an adjustable base) can elevate or recline the upper and lower parts of your mattress into different postures. Usually, these adjustments are made with the help of an electric motor.
The best adjustable bed frames allow for a variety of positions, including elevated head and feet, anti-snoring setups, and the zero-gravity posture. The zero-gravity effect is achieved by slightly elevating both your upper and lower body, which relieves pressure and can help with back, neck, and hip pain.
Many adjustable bases also offer bonus features such as massage functions, under-bed lighting, and USB charging ports.
What to Look for in a Mattress for an Adjustable Bed
Compatibility with Adjustable Bed Frames
When shopping for a mattress to pair with an adjustable base, the first thing you should check for is explicit confirmation that the two can go together. Most mattress brands will tell you somewhere on their website whether or not their beds are compatible with an adjustable frame. If you can’t find this information online, try calling the company or chatting with customer service.
Many mattress brands also sell their own adjustable bases, and their website will usually recommend placing their mattresses on one of those. You may even be able to save some money by bundling the mattress and the base together.
But unless there’s something really unique about the mattress’s or base’s construction, you don’t have to buy the mattress and base from the same brand. A mattress that can flex on one brand’s adjustable base should flex just as well on another.
Flexible Construction
A mattress on top of an adjustable base should be flexible enough to bend with the base as it tilts into various positions. Thinner, low-profile mattresses are better at this, so we recommend focusing on ones that are 8 to 12 inches tall.
The materials inside the mattress can also affect its flexibility. You don’t want the components to be so rigid that the mattress can’t bend, or so brittle and low-quality that they sustain damage when the bed flexes.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam mattresses work very well with adjustable beds because they’re flexible enough to move with the base. You just have to make sure that the bed’s construction offers enough overall support.
Hybrid Mattresses
Many hybrid mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases. Because of the springs inside them, they may not bend quite as easily as an all-foam bed, but you’re not likely to notice the difference—and they support they offer is tough to beat.
Latex Mattresses
Whether hybrid or all-foam, latex mattresses can work well with adjustable bases if they aren’t too thick.
Innerspring Mattresses
Although some traditional innerspring mattresses with pocketed coils may work with an adjustable base, this type of mattress tends to be too inflexible.
Durability
An adjustable base will put more stress on a mattress than a standard bed frame. You’ll want a bed made with resilient materials, not foams that will retain dents or springs that will become misshapen after lots of bending.
There are a few ways to assess a bed’s durability before buying it.
- Go for generous warranties. Low-quality mattresses probably won’t have a lengthy warranty that covers much. You’ll want a warranty that extends for a decade or longer. Also, before putting a mattress on an adjustable bed base, make sure that this type of usage is covered by your warranty.
- Investigate the materials. If a brand is cagey about what foams they use or how many coils are in a bed, that’s not a good sign. Check for details on each layer and look for certifications that denote safe, strong materials, such as ones from CertiPUR-US® and eco-INSTITUT.
- Buy from brands that test for longevity. Many mattress brands actually put their mattresses through stress tests that simulate the effects of long-term use. They’ll have robotic machinery literally beat up the mattresses to see what they can withstand.
- Look for beds designed for all body types. Beds that can accommodate larger bodies are generally constructed with sturdier, more durable materials.
The Right Size
Mattresses have a lot of variation in sizing, so if you’re buying an electric base and the mattress separately, pay close attention to the measurements to ensure a proper fit.
If you sleep with a partner, you can look into the option of getting a split queen, king, or California king. With this arrangement, you get two mattresses on two adjustable bases. The beds are positioned side by side but move independently of one another when one of you makes an adjustment.
If you like to sit up in bed to watch television, but your partner prefers to lie flat, this arrangement should help you both get what you want. No compromising required!
Not sure what size you need? Consult our mattress size guide.
Features that Pair Well with an Adjustable Base
Some mattresses have features that work especially well with adjustable bases. Check for the following as you shop:
- A textured lower cover that can help prevent slipping and sliding when the base moves.
- Lots of size options for a split setup, where each person can control a separate adjustable base to configure their “side” of the bed. A split king arrangement is most popular, and requires two twin XL mattresses.
- Zoned innerspring units with more resistance in the middle third of the bed. These coil units can probably bend easier at the head and foot—and they offer more support for your lower back, to boot!
Adjustable Bed Pros & Cons
Mattresses for Adjustable Beds FAQs
What’s the best mattress thickness for an adjustable bed?
Ideally, a mattress on an adjustable base should be 10-12 inches thick. Thicker mattresses won’t be able to bend as well when the base moves, and thinner ones may not give you the support and cushion you need for quality rest.
Do adjustable beds ruin mattresses?
As long as the frame and bed are compatible, there’s little risk of an adjustable base ruining your mattress. However, you should be aware that your bed might wear out faster due to the strain caused by the adjustable base’s movements.
Avoiding extreme angles and laying the mattress flat when you’re not using it can prolong its life.
Can any mattress be used on adjustable beds?
Most modern mattresses can be placed on an electric base, but there are a few exceptions. The following types either can’t or shouldn’t be paired with an adjustable base:
- Mattresses that have hard components built into them, including wires on the edges, hard foam panels or wood
- Old-school innerspring mattresses without comfort layers on top of the coils (check the manufacturer’s product description)
- Beds with air chambers inside them that will be blocked off when the base bends
- Waterbeds
- Mattresses that explicitly state in their warranty that they can’t be paired with an adjustable base
Should I pick a firm or soft mattress for my adjustable bed frame?
Medium-firm is a solid choice. A mattress that’s too firm might not conform well to the base, especially at sharp angles. However, a mattress that’s too soft might not last as long, and won’t have the necessary support for proper spinal alignment.
