Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. We look at features that are valuable to consumers, such as temperature control, bounce, edge support, and motion isolation.

We also evaluate mattress performance for back, side, and stomach sleeping. Lying in different positions lets us know how supportive the bed is and if it’s good at relieving pressure.

We then take all the information we’ve gathered to rate the bed in specific categories. These results allow us to help our readers find the right mattress for their needs.

Advice from a Medical Expert

We reached out to Dr. Raj Dasgupta, who has over 20 years of experience in the medical field, to see his thoughts on what key qualities people experiencing menopause need in a mattress.

“Prioritize mattresses that include temperature regulation to address your hot flashes, offer pressure relief, give medium to medium-firm support, absorb motion, are hypoallergenic, durable and even adjustable if possible.”

Why the DreamCloud Premier Earned Best Mattress for Menopause Overall

A luxurious bed may be just what you need if menopause symptoms are keeping you awake at night—or if you just want to pamper yourself as you enter a new phase of life. The DreamCloud Premier provides a luxury sleep experience at a nice price.

During testing, we found that this medium-firm bed excels in pressure relief, has some bounce, and an overall sumptuous feel that should work for a variety of sleepers, not just those with menopause. It also shouldn’t cause overheating, a benefit if your symptoms include night sweats. It’s a stellar bed overall, so it’s no surprise it earned our top spot.

What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?

The DreamCloud Premier is 13 inches thick with a total of eight layers.

DreamCloud Premier Mattress Construction
  • Layer 1 – Cover. A cashmere blend cover starts the mattress out with a luxurious, soft feel.
  • Layer 2 – Quilted Foam. A contouring layer of foam brings cushioning to the Euro top of this bed.
  • Layer 3 – Quilted Foam. Another layer of quilted foam reinforces the Euro top with added support.
  • Layer 4 – Gel-Infused Memory Foam. This foam layer is infused with gel to keep cool as it relieves pressure.
  • Layer 5 – Dynamic Transition Layer. A final comfort layer eases into the innerspring unit while promoting spinal alignment.
  • Layer 6 – Coils. Individually wrapped steel coils bolster support. Stronger coils line the edges to keep them from sagging.
  • Layer 7 – Base Layer. A sturdy foam foundation.
  • Layer 8 – Lower Cover. The bottom cover resists slipping features handles for easy transport.

My Take: Beds with this level of quality and attention to detail can cost you thousands of dollars if you were to find it in a store. Features like a Euro top and cashmere blend cover are not common in the bed-in-a-box corner of the mattress market, but DreamCloud offers both in their Premier model at around $1,800 for a queen (sometimes under $1,000 during sales!).

What I Liked

  • Pressure relief star – The DreamCloud Premier has several comfort layers on top to bring ultimate cushioning. Your sensitive joints should feel cradled as you sink comfortably into the mattress surface.
  • Aligns the spine – Despite this softness, the Premier doesn’t skimp on the support. The coils underneath its plush foams should ensure your spine remains straight.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Lacking edge support – The Premier has reinforcement along the perimeter of the bed, but I noticed during testing that they didn’t hold up as well as I’d like. You may notice some sagging if you sit or lay directly on the edges.
  • Too soft for some – Some folks may find this bed doesn’t bring the support it requires. As a stomach sleeper myself, I would’ve liked a firmer bed to keep my hips lifted.

Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Premier

Coming in at 4.5 out of 5 stars on DreamCloud’s site, the DreamCloud Premier receives a majority of positive reviews. Customers praise the DreamCloud Premier mattress for its luxury feel, but some have noted that it may not be the best choice for those on a tighter budget.

Why the Helix Midnight Luxe Earned Best Mattress for Side Sleepers in Menopause

Side sleepers with menopause are going to need a bed that’ll relieve pressure in the hips and shoulders while still keeping them comfortably aloft. The Helix Midnight Luxe should get the job done, an upgraded version of the bed’s famous medium-firm mattress for side sleepers.

The pillow top is cushioning but also cool to the touch to assist with any night sweats brought on by hot flashes. While the comfort layers on top work to cradle your sensitive joints, the zoned coils below ensure nothing falls out of alignment.

What’s the Helix Midnight Luxe Made Of?

The Helix Midnight Luxe has six total layers and measures 13.5 inches tall.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Construction
  • Layer 1 – Cooling Pillow Top. A cover made from breathable Tencel™ and GlacioTex™ fibers overlays quilted foam for a plush, cool sleep surface.
  • Layer 2 – Helix Responsive Foam. A medium feel foam bounces back quickly to your movements for responsive contouring.
  • Layer 3 – Copper Gel Memory Foam. This pressure-relieving foam layer is infused with copper. Which is naturally cooling and antibacterial.
  • Layer 4 – Memory Plus Foam. A final foam layer transitions into the coil unit below it.
  • Layer 5 – Coils. Individually wrapped coils are zoned for support in the back while allowing for give in the shoulders and hips.
  • Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. The foundational foam layer.

Our Take: “We use a heat map that shows pressure distribution and found that [the Helix Midnight Luxe] evenly distributes your weight, which helps keep pressure and pain off of the hips and shoulders of side sleepers. It also kept us aligned, so I’ll agree [with the brand] and say that this is a good choice for side sleepers.” – Loren Bullock, Lead Product Tester

What We Liked

  • Keeps cool – This bed has a ton of temperature-regulating features: a breathable cover, gel-infused foams, individually wrapped coils—so it’s no surprise we found it to be pretty cool in the studio.
  • Balanced softness and support – The Helix Midnight Luxe’s hybrid construction of foams and coils gives it an edge; you don’t have to sacrifice either softness or support on this medium-firm profile.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Too soft for some – The Helix Midnight is best suited to side sleepers, and some back sleepers can enjoy it too, but there’s some who should steer clear. Heavier folks or those who sleep on their stomach are probably going to need something firmer to keep them properly supported.
  • Luxury price tag – Be aware that as a “Luxe” model, the Helix Midnight Luxe can drive a hard bargain for some budget shoppers. A queen size mattress will run you about $2,400 before sales or coupons.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Luxe

On Helix’s website, the mattress scores 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress for its customized support but have reported that it may not be the best option for those who prefer an exceptionally soft sleep surface.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Affordable Mattress for Menopause

Shelling out for a whole new mattress doesn’t have to be as costly as it sounds. The Nectar mattress is a super affordable option that should also work for shoppers who have to factor in menopause to their consideration.

Where this bed really shines is pressure relief. It’s got three layers of specialized foams that provide that iconic “hugging” sensation as you sink into it. But the firm support base ensures that you don’t fall too deep and exacerbate any pain. And for about $1,100 for a queen (that’s before sales), it’s really a bang for your buck.

What’s the Nectar Mattress Made Of?

The Nectar has five layers (if you count its top and bottom covers) and stands 12 inches high.

Testing the layers and construction of the nectar mattress
  • Layer 1 – Cover. The cover is both breathable and heat-absorbent thanks to its polyethylene fibers.
  • Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam (2 inches).  The first comfort layer is a 2-inch sheet of gel memory foam that cozily molds around your silhouette.
  • Layer 3 – Dynamic Response Foam (3 inches). This foam layer is more responsive and supportive than the above layer.  It helps to dampen motion and keep your back from dipping into misalignment.
  • Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Base Foam (7 inches). A dense foam comprises the Nectar’s durable base.
  • Layer 5 – Lower Cover. A lower cover keeps the mattress from any unwanted sliding around.

My Take: Memory foam’s soft and cushy, so it’s a good match for side and back sleepers. That’s the case with the Nectar, as I noted good pressure relief on my joints during testing.

What I Liked

  • Pressure relief with a firm core – The Nectar’s foams are pillowy enough to hug the body, but they still keep sensitive areas (such as the lower back) boosted. This balance should suit side sleepers and back sleepers well.
  • Standout policies – With policies such as a lifetime warranty, year-long sleep trial, and free shipping, Nectar distinguishes itself as an extremely customer-friendly brand.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not for stomach sleepers – Although the firmer foams inside the Nectar can definitely assist with spinal alignment, their overall supportiveness is contingent on both your body type and your sleeping position. If you’re an average- to plus-sized stomach sleeper, I wouldn’t recommend this bed for you.
  • It might heat up – I’d go for a hybrid or latex mattress over the Nectar if you’re someone who tends to get too warm at night. Even though it touts a breathable cover and gel-infused foam, this bed won’t be a cooling superstar.

Customer Reviews of the Nectar

With thousands of reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average 4.8 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Mattress for Menopause and Back Pain

Dealing with menopause and back pain can be difficult, and you shouldn’t have to sacrifice or compromise when it comes to a mattress for both. Thankfully, the Saatva Classic should prove helpful in both areas.

The luxury brand’s flagship mattress offers a wealth of back-specific enhancements, including a lumbar crown, an aligning spinal wire, and zoning in the first of two (you heard me, two!) coil units. These coil units also help air flow through the bed, keeping it cool during any hot flashes. Its euro top should balance out this sturdy support with plenty of cushion and pressure relief.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Saatva Classic comes in two heights (11.5 inches and 14.5 inches) and three firmnesses (Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm).

The inside of the Saatva Classic Mattress
  • Euro Top. Swathed in an organic cotton cover, the Euro top is composed of quilted foams treated to resist microbial growth. The center has tighter quilting to support the back.
  • Memory Foam Crown. A crest of memory foam keeps the lower back lifted while providing pressure relief.
  • First Innerspring Unit. The first set of coils are pocketed for individual push-back. The center features firmer coils in the center to evenly distribute weight.
  • Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. A wire located within the coil units guides the spine so it remains straight.
  • Second Innerspring Unit. The second set of coils is a more traditional innerspring unit to further bolster durability and support.
  • High-Density Foam Rails. The perimeter of the mattress is lined with dense foam rails to help prevent the edges from sagging.

My Take: This luxurious Saatva mattress should be good for menopause and hot flashes because it improves airflow. The innerspring unit allows the air to circulate, preventing the construction from overheating.

What I Liked

  • Customizable – With two heights and three firmnesses to choose from, it’s easy to tailor the Saatva Classic to your individual needs and preferences. We do think that the Luxury Firm model is the best for a middle-of-the-road feel that should suit a variety of sleepers.
  • Free white glove delivery – All Saatva mattresses come with free white glove delivery. This means they’ll send a team to help set up your mattress and take your old one away—for free!

Potential Drawbacks

  • Returns cost extra – Though the delivery’s fancy and free, it’s a different story if you don’t love your mattress at first. You’ll have to pay $99 to return your bed.
  • Could isolate motion better – Double the coils means double the bounce, which is great for folks who toss and turn, but not when it comes to motion isolation. If you share the bed, you’re likely to feel your partner’s movements, like getting in and out of bed.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Hybrid Mattress for Menopause

Hybrid mattresses are a great option for menopause since they have comfortable foams to relieve pressure and supportive coil units that should help the bed stay cool as air flows through them. The WinkBed is one such bed, but it brings plenty more to the table.

For one, it’s super durable and sturdy. Its construction should not only last you a long time, but it should provide a lot of lift at the surface. You should be able to move around with ease. This bed has multiple models that can work for a variety of sleepers, but the firmer options especially can accommodate stomach sleepers and plus-size folks.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed stands 13.5 inches tall. It comes in Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus models.

WinkBeds Mattress Construction
  • Tencel™ Cover. Derived from Eucalyptus trees, this breathable and sustainable material wicks away moisture at the mattress surface.
  • Euro Pillow Top. The Euro top is quilted with plush foam for cushioning and pressure relief.
  • Additional Foam Layers. Between the Euro top and innerspring unit, a series of specialized foam layers contribute a variety of features like motion isolation, support, and the mattress’ overall durability.
  • Coils. Pocketed coils are zoned in multiple areas for balanced lift and give, resulting in your proper alignment.

Our Take: “There are multiple firmness options—in fact, four—to choose from, so it should work for just about anyone.” – Loren, Lead Product Tester

What We Liked

  • Options aplenty – The WinkBed has four different firmnesses to choose from, including a special model for plus-size folks. If you want something softer or firmer, you should be able to find it in one of the WinkBed models.
  • Super lift – You won’t feel stuck on the surface of this mattress. Its sturdy hybrid construction gives it more of a lifted feel than a sinking, cradling feel. This should make it great for folks who move around a lot in their sleep.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not for foam fans – As I said above, you won’t be “hugged” by this mattress. So, if you prefer cushy memory foam beds, the WinkBed might not be the best choice.
  • Lacking motion isolation – The WinkBed has some foams on top, but not enough to absorb motion. Its springy feel may let motion travel across the surface, but others might appreciate the bed’s bounce.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Memory Foam Mattress for Menopause

If you enjoy the gradual sink and body-hugging feel of memory foam, the Nolah Signature may be up your alley. It’s an all-foam bed, but it doesn’t fall into many all-foam stereotypes. For one thing, it’s made with Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam™, a material that the brand claims provides even more pressure relief than traditional foams.

During testing, my fellow Lead Product Tester Loren confirmed that the Signature has “no problem adapting to your body’s shape.” She felt “absolutely no pressure build-up” as the foam molded to the shape of her silhouette. If transitioning into menopause has left you with joint pain or other kinds of achiness, this bed should help relieve those symptoms.

What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?

The Nolah Signature is a foot tall and has five main layers.

  • Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. A moisture-wicking cotton cover that should breathe easy during hot flashes.
  • Layer 2 – Plush Nolah AirFoam™ (2.5 inches). A first layer of AirFoam™ cushions your body’s pressure points.
  • Layer 3 – Active Response Foam (1.5 inches). This foam has some springiness to it, and allows for more airflow than denser foams.
  • Layer 4 – Firm Nolah AirFoam™ (1 inch). This second layer of AirFoam™ has a bit less give to it for underlying support in addition to pressure relief.
  • Layer 5 – High-Density Core Foundation (7 inches). The stable core of the bed, made of thick foam.

Our Take: “When we say that this mattress hugs you, we mean it. This thing is coming at you like your grandma walking in through the front door to embrace you at Christmas.” – Loren, Lead Product Tester

What We Liked

  • Awesome choice for side-sleeping – According to Loren, the side-sleepers who tested this bed felt “amazing cushion—no complaints.” She also noted that their hips and shoulders were sinking to an equal level, so alignment was well-preserved.
  • Better edges than you’d expect – All-foam beds don’t typically have the best edge support. This one, however, gave a good showing when we sat and laid down on the sides.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Inhibits movements – The same “hugging” sensation that many people enjoy about this bed makes it difficult to move around much once you’ve laid down. “It’s kind of like being in quicksand, where the more you move, the more you sink,” said Loren. If menopause makes you shift around a lot, or you value lots of responsiveness in a mattress, this one isn’t for you.
  • Not a cooling superstar – Perhaps unsurprisingly, this all-foam bed doesn’t cool off as much of a hybrid. The AirFoam™ might be slightly better at cooling than denser memory foams, but the difference between the two materials wasn’t hugely noticeable with regards to temperature regulation.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature

The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website.Customers appreciate the Nolah Signature mattress for its exceptional pressure relief, but some have mentioned that it lacks the edge support they desire.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Earned Best Cooling Mattress for Menopause

Hot flashes are one of the most bothersome symptoms of menopause, especially when you’re trying to sleep. A mattress with dedicated cooling elements can help to ease some of this discomfort—but not all cooling mattresses are created equal.

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is at the top of my list of temperature-regulating beds. During testing, it managed to lower its surface temperature at an impressive speed, and we agreed that it felt both silky and cool to the touch. In her previous run-in with this bed, Emma even called it “one of the coolest sleeping mattresses that we’ve ever received.”

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe has six layers and a 13-inch profile. You can order it in one of three firmness levels: Soft, Medium, or Firm.

Take a closer look at the construction of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe
  • Layer 1 – GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover. A cool-feeling cover with heat-dissipating GlacioTex™ fibers built in.
  • Layer 2 – CopperFlex™ Foam. A contouring foam with latex-like bounce and phase-change material for added cooling properties.
  • Layer 3 – Supreme Response Comfort Foam. A second comfort layer of responsive, cushioning foam.
  • Layer 4 – Gel Swirl Memory Foam (Soft and Medium Models) or VariFlex™ Transition Foam (Firm Model). The final comfort layer conveys even more pressure relief, or, in the Firm model, serves as a supportive transitional layer before the spring unit.
  • Layer 5 – Coils. The springs in this mattress are individually wrapped and reinforced along all four edges.
  • Layer 6 – High-Density Foam Base. A robust base that holds up all the previous layers.

My Take: My spine felt fantastic in every position on this mattress. I was lifted by its support layers, but not so much that I was uncomfortable—and its cooling powers are truly outstanding.

What I Liked

  • Extremely cool – As I’ve mentioned, this bed excels at cooling. The GlacioTex™ cover, phase change material in the upper comfort foam, and spring unit all work together to keep heat at bay.
  • Great for combination sleeping – The springback is pretty much instantaneous on this bed—you can change positions and feel like its surface is working with you, not against you.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Runs firm – We tested the Medium version of this bed, and it felt a bit firm to me. Petite people and exclusive side sleepers will probably want to pick the softest model, or go with a plusher mattress overall.
  • Edges aren’t stellar – Although I could lie down on the edge of this bed without much issue, sitting at the edges caused more buckling than I like to see.

Customer Reviews of the Aurora Luxe

On Brooklyn Bedding’s site, the Aurora Luxe has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers praise the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress for its advanced cooling features, but some have mentioned that it is relatively expensive compared to other options.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Mattress for Back Sleepers in Menopause

If you primarily sleep on your back, the best mattresses for you will feel medium-firm and support your spine’s natural curvature. During menopause, you’ll also want a bed with a few cooling elements and enough adaptability to support your movements during the night.

The Bear Star Hybrid definitely qualifies. We recommend it for back sleepers often, citing its comfy-yet-firm feel and the steady support from its spring unit. It also features Celliant® in its cover, a performance textile that may be able to assist with muscle recovery during the night. As a final, refreshing bonus, the cover’s HydroCool® technology “has a cool-to-the-touch feel,” said Stuart.

What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Star Hybrid has five total layers and stands 13 inches tall.

Take a closer look at the Bear Star Hybrid mattress construction
  • Layer 1 – Cover. With a mix of Celliant® and HydroCool® technology, this mattress cover accomplishes more than most. Celliant® allegedly transforms body heat into infrared energy, which in turn helps the body’s tissues to recover after an active day.
  • Layer 2 – Serene Gel Foam. A cooling foam that cradles your pressure points.
  • Layer 3 – Responsive Comfort Foam. A firmer foam that reshapes quickly to allow for seamless repositioning at night.
  • Layer 4 – Coils. The hybrid’s pocketed coils are extra-strong along the perimeter for edge support.
  • Layer 5 – High-Density Support Foam. A strong foundation.

Our Take: “I found that the Bear Star mattress has a medium-firm feel … The responsive comfort foam offers exceptional pressure relief and support, adapting to all sleeping positions.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • A special textile – Not many mattresses have Celliant® in their construction, and if you’re struggling with certain menopause symptoms, this textile may help. Research on its efficacy is ongoing, but Bear claims that it can help you achieve more restful sleep and boost your muscle recovery as you rest.
  • Assured alignment – For us, the Bear brand is almost synonymous with back-sleeping. Their beds balance lift and cushion in just the right way for the average sleeper who prefers this position.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Could be too firm – If you’re lightweight or you really prize a bed with a pillowy softness, the Bear Star Hybrid might feel too hard for you. It has a medium-firm, distinctly hybrid feel.
  • Not much bounce – Despite having springs, this bed isn’t very bouncy. It should allow you to move around on top of it easily, but its responsiveness doesn’t extend much farther than that.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid

Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

Why the Birch Natural Earned Best Organic Mattress for Menopause

Made with natural latex, organic cotton, and organic wool, the Birch Natural should appeal to people who like to avoid synthetic components in their beds. Thankfully, those greener materials are comfy, too. The latex in particular should help sleepers with menopause, as it’s a naturally cooler product than poly foam, as well as a springy layer that will help with repositioning during  nighttime restlessness.

Stuart spoke to this responsiveness after he tested the Birch: “I really appreciate the way the latex and coils respond to my movements, helping me to switch positions easier without feeling stuck in the bed.”

What’s the Birch Natural Made Of?

The Birch Natural is 11 inches tall and has six layers.

  • Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. The cotton in the cover has been certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and retains its natural hue.
  • Layer 2 – Organic Wool. The first layer of organic wool serves as a fire-resistant safety measure, taking the place of a synthetic fire retardant.
  • Layer 3 – Organic Wool. The second layer of wool adds coziness to the top of the bed and assists with regulating the mattress’s temperature.
  • Layer 4 – Natural Talalay Latex. Derived from rubber-tree sap, latex foam both cushions the body and creates helpful bounce when you need to shift around.
  • Layer 5 – Coils. The individually wrapped springs are reinforced on the long sides of the bed.
  • Layer 6 – Organic Wool. A last layer of wool functions as an additional fire safety measure and base.

Our Take: “The Birch Natural mattress should make a great bed for eco-conscious sleepers who want lots of bounce and a medium feel.” – Stuart, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Springy and responsive – Stuart valued how the Birch Natural readily adapted to his movements. The springiness of the latex and coils helped him to change position and ensured that he never felt “stuck” in the bed.
  • Avoidance of chemicals and synthetics – From its hypoallergenic, innately cooling latex layer to its certified organic textiles, this mattress takes great pains to prioritize natural materials over synthetic ones.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Could be softer – While lying on his side, Stuart was wishing he had a mattress topper to up the plushness of the Birch. Lightweight sleepers and people who lie on their sides exclusively may want a more cushiony bed.
  • Doesn’t cancel out motion well – The same springs and latex that help with responsiveness are barriers to motion isolation, so sharing the Birch Natural with a partner might make for a slightly jostly experience. “If you’re looking for something that absorbs motion, you may prefer memory foam over latex,” Stuart advised.

Customer Reviews of the Birch Natural

According to Birch’s website, the Birch Natural scores a 4.6 out of 5 stars. While some users consider the Birch Natural mattress to be on the pricier side, it gains customer appreciation for its organic materials and sustainable, eco-friendly construction.

Why the Leesa Reserve Hybrid Earned Best Luxury Mattress for Menopause

Leesa designates the Reserve Hybrid as its “most premium” mattress, and for people with menopause, that title equates to oodles of pressure relief coupled with zoned support. An impressive five layers of foam comprise the comfort layers of the bed, each with a specified feel and function. That’s a lot of cushioning for an achy body—and it’s balanced out by extra lift beneath the lower back.

What’s the Leesa Reserve Hybrid Made Of?

The Leesa Reserve Hybrid is 14 inches tall with seven layers. You can order it in one of three comfort levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm.

  • Layer 1 – Cooling Cover. Polyethylene fibers help to keep this surface layer pleasantly cool.
  • Layer 2 – Memory Foam Comfort Layer (1.5 inches). High-density memory foam cradles your body at the top of the bed.
  • Layer 3 – Memory Foam Contour Layer (1.5 inches). This memory foam layer molds to the shape of your silhouette for an even deeper “hug” than the first layer.
  • Layer 4 – Restorative Support Layer (1.5 inches). A third layer of foam absorbs motion while providing a bit more pushback.
  • Layer 5 – Transition Layer (0.75 inches). A thinner sheet of foam separates the comfort layers above from the support layers below.
  • Layer 6 – Zoned Innerspring Unit (8 inches). These pocketed coils are reinforced along the edges and divided into three zones, the middle of which gives an extra boost to the hips and lumbar spine.
  • Layer 7 – Stability Layer (0.75 inches). A thick foam foundation.

Our Take: This bed should feel more soft and luxurious than most hybrids, thanks to the sheer number of comfort foams above its spring unit.

What We Liked

  • High-density foams – Leesa made a point to only use high-density memory foams in this mattress. Denser foams are more durable and more likely to give you that sustained hugging feeling throughout the night.
  • Lumbar support – A zoned innerspring unit can be a key feature for people who want to avoid lower back pain. By elevating the hips and lumbar spine, the coils in the middle zone of this bed encourage proper spine alignment.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not a ton of cooling elements – This bed has a cooling cover, but that’s the only nod to temperature regulation in its construction. Airflow around its springs should help, but I’m a little concerned about heat retention given the five layers of comfort foams.
  • Ships in two boxes – Because of its lofty height and many layers, this bed ships in two boxes instead of one, making setup a bit more of a chore.

Customer Reviews of the Leesa Reserve Hybrid

This mattress was newly added to Leesa’s lineup in February of 2024, so it doesn’t have any designated customer reviews so far. We’ll keep an eye out for customer feedback as more people buy and experience the bed.

What to Look For in a Mattress for Menopause

During the transition into menopause, which is known as perimenopause, people can experience symptoms1 like hot flashes, mood swings, and insomnia. As many as 47 percent2 of people can experience insomnia while in perimenopause, with that number increasing to 60 percent post-menopause.

This means that finding a mattress to help with sleep is key, and there are specific factors to look out for in a mattress for menopause.

Type of Mattress

From our mattress studio, images of our tested mattresses in different materials
We test all types of mattresses in our mattress testing facility.

Innerspring Mattresses

This type of mattress is one of the oldest around. An innerspring mattress contains coils that offer support. The result is a more breathable surface and more airflow throughout the product, which keeps you cooler.

Traditional innerspring beds are affordable, cool, and bouncy, but they don’t have much cushioning for pressure relief, which could be a drawback for side sleepers, lighter-weight people, and those also experiencing joint pain.

Hybrid Mattresses

A hybrid mattress usually combines innerspring coils with several foam layers on top, often memory foam, poly foam, latex, or a combination of them. These beds are beneficial because they provide the supportive bounce of the coils with the soothing comfort of memory foam or latex. The coils provide more airflow, and if the top layers are also cooling, these could be helpful for times when hot flashes emerge.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Although memory foam mattress is often a top pick for people in general, the contouring properties and cell structure of memory foam could make you hotter than you already are – so pick a modern design if you go this route.

If you love the feel of memory foam, look for qualities like “open cell” construction, pinholes, or other features that allow for airflow. There are also foam beds with gel and copper infusions to help draw heat away from the body, and phase-change materials that can be noticeably cool to the touch.

Latex Mattresses

This material is made from the sap of a rubber tree, though if you get synthetic latex, this won’t be the case, or it could be a blend. A latex mattress is another fantastic solution because the process of converting latex into a bedding surface involves creating air pockets that enhance breathability and the material doesn’t retain heat.

Latex is also highly durable for longer-lasting use and provides good bounce for easier mobility.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress for Menopause

Sleeping Position

The type of mattress you get should also depend on your preferred sleeping position. If you sleep on your side, for example, you’ll want a bed that provides a good amount of pressure relief on your shoulder and hip. As such, softer memory foam top layers can be great for side sleepers.

If you sleep on your stomach, though, you’ll want a firmer bed with less give to keep your spine straight. Something like a firm innerspring, hybrid, or foam bed would work well here.
Back sleepers typically need a balance of firm support at the base and some softness on top, so medium-firm beds are often recommended for this group.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

Your body type and weight will also determine what type of mattress is the best fit for you. If you’re under 130 pounds or so, you might go with a softer bed if that feels comfortable for you. If you’re average-weight, a medium-firm bed should be a good fit, and if you weigh more than about 230 pounds, you’ll need a more supportive bed. This might mean it includes something like an innerspring unit or highly-dense foam layers.

For More Information: Best Mattresses for Heavyweight Sleepers

Firmness

Finding the right firmness is all about your body type and preferred sleeping position. In general, side sleepers and lightweight sleepers do well with a softer mattress; back and average-weight sleepers with a medium-firm bed; and stomach and heavy-weight sleepers with a firmer bed.

Of course, firmness is subjective and each bed will feel different for each sleeper. Somebody who weighs less may lie on a bed and feel like it is much firmer than if a heavyweight person lied on the same bed. The trick is finding a mattress that feels firm enough to keep your back in neutral alignment through the night, but not so firm that it is uncomfortable.

Learn more about it in our mattress firmness guide.

Cooling

More than 80 percent3 of people going through menopause experience hot flashes, and oftentimes, these occur at night. This is why finding a mattress that doesn’t overheat you further is so important during this time.

Memory foam tends to be a hotter material, so unless your memory foam bed has gel cooling technology or is perforated, we recommend going with a more breathable bed. Beds that include springs and/or latex are naturally more cooling. You may also want to top your mattress off with some cooling sheets for additional comfort.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation measures how well a bed can isolate motion from one side of the bed to the other. This means, if you share a bed and the other person moves at night, you’re less likely to be jolted awake and vice versa.

This is important during perimenopause and menopause because you’re more likely to have insomnia already2, so little movements that didn’t disturb you before, might now. Plus, if you’re in and out of bed at night, you’re less likely to wake up your sleeping partner.

Memory foam mattresses tend to be the best at isolating motion because they have the least bounce, whereas innerspring beds with more bounce tend to have worse motion isolation.

Sex

If you’re sexually active, a mattress with more bounce might be a good pick for you. Innerspring and hybrid beds are some of our picks for beds for sex, but honestly, it is all about personal preference.

Hybrid mattresses are a good compromise because they can still have some bounce but also dampen motion transfer through foam layers and individually wrapping the coils.

Pressure Relief

A mattress with pressure relief will feel like a deep hug around your joints. A traditional memory foam bed is a great example of this. A mattress without a lot of pressure relief will feel springy and taut; you’ll feel more like you’re sleeping on top of the bed rather than sinking into it.

Many people going through menopause experience joint pain4 due to the drop in estrogen. Finding a mattress that has a good balance of support to keep your spine straight and pressure relief to cradle your joints will be important.

Edge Support

Edge support is a mattress’s reinforced edges, either with extra coils, more foam, or some other material that makes the perimeter of your mattress stronger. You’ll know a bed has good edge support if you’re able to sit or lie near the edge of the mattress without it drooping down.

The reason this matters is that without good edge support, you won’t be able to comfortably or safely use the entire surface of your mattress. When the edges start drooping down, this could throw your spine out of alignment, and make it so you and your partner are fighting over the middle space in the bed.

Budget

Menopause commonly increases feelings of stress and anxiety5, so we know how important it is not to add another big stress during this time. That’s why finding a bed that is within your budget will matter.

On average, you can expect to spend about this much for each type of bed:

  • Foam – 1,000 dollars
  • Innerspring – 900 dollars
  • Hybrid – 1,000 dollars
  • Latex – 1,500 dollars

You can spend less than this or more, depending on the brand and quality of the bed. However, we don’t recommend spending too little or buying a used mattress just to ensure you’re getting a quality product.

What Causes Sleep Problems During Menopause?

In the transition period leading up to menopause, the body begins producing less progesterone and estrogen6. During this time, these two hormones can vary widely, and periods can become irregular and unpredictable. Eventually, periods stop altogether and these hormones are produced at a very, very low level7.

The side effects from these hormonal shifts can include hot flashes, mood swings, anxiety, depression, vaginal dryness, changes in libido, decreased bladder control, and changes in sleep6. Not only can hormonal changes have a direct impact on your sleep (progesterone tends to be a “sleepy” hormone and a decrease in this can mean less sleep8), but side effects like hot flashes, an increased need to pee, and anxiety can all impact sleep.

We will get into more detail on this below, but research shows that menopause can also increase the likelihood of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea9, which can impact sleep quality.

How Can A Mattress Help with Night Sweats and Hot Flashes?

For many, sleep becomes more difficult throughout perimenopause and into menopause. Finding a mattress that can help you stay cool, comfortable, and undisturbed throughout the night may help mitigate some of these sleep issues. For example, hot flashes affect most people going through this transition period3. A solution would be keeping your bedroom cool, sleeping on cooling bedding, and making sure you’re not using a mattress that overheats you.

If you share a bed with somebody and have trouble sleeping, it’s also helpful to invest in a good with good motion isolation so you’re less likely to disturb them when you adjust.

Additionally, you’ll want a bed that is both supportive and relieves pressure. Going through menopause can cause joint pain and lower back issues4, so you’ll want a bed that helps relieve this discomfort to help you sleep better through the night.

What is the Best Sleeping Position for Menopause?

Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping can cause neck pain because your head will be turned to the side on your pillow in this position. It can also lead to back pain since this position can place strain and pressure on your spine14.

Since the change in hormones during this time can have an impact on joints, muscles, and bones4, we recommend sleeping in a position that doesn’t put undue strain on your neck or back.

That said, if stomach sleeping is the only way you can get some shut-eye, we recommend sleeping however you can. If you must sleep on your stomach, use a low-loft pillow to minimize the strain on your neck and back.

Back Sleeping

Studies show that as progesterone and estrogen decline during menopause, it increases the likelihood of developing obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA9. During REM sleep, the muscles in the back of your throat naturally relax. For those with OSA, these airways become too narrow and not enough oxygen gets through. This drop in oxygen levels causes the body to wake up suddenly in order to breathe properly again.

Back sleeping can make both OSA symptoms and snoring worse. Since these are known to be exacerbated during perimenopause and after menopause, it may be best to avoid sleeping on your back during this time.

Of course, if menopause is not affecting your breathing at night, back sleeping should be just fine if it feels most comfortable for you.

Side Sleeping

If snoring or sleep apnea is one of your menopausal symptoms, try sleeping on your side to open up the airways more.

If your breathing isn’t affected by menopause, side sleeping is still a good option. Experts at Johns Hopkins Medicine12 say that side sleeping – particularly on your left side – can help with digestion and symptoms of acid reflux or heartburn. Since menopause can increase symptoms13 of acid reflux and heartburn, this might be good to keep in mind.

Combination Sleeping

Combination sleeping is moving between two or more sleep positions throughout the night.

Since sleep can be hard to come by and symptoms like hot flashes might make you uncomfortable, moving from one position to another makes sense.

There isn’t any science regarding the pros or cons of combination sleeping for those going through menopause. As long as you’re not dealing with breathing issues or heartburn, some combination of sleep positions should be fine.

Tips for Better Sleeping During Menopause

  • Use cooling sheets and blankets – To further help you stay cool during menopause, look for breathable bedding materials like linen or cotton, and if you have a blanket on the bed, opt for something that is lightweight and a wool blend as this material is great for wicking away moisture.

  • Use cooling pillows – Cooling pillows are also helpful during those times you experience hot flashes or night sweats. Looks for pillows made with naturally cooler materials like bamboo or latex, or if you prefer memory foam pillows, get ones with cooling gel added to them.

  • Invest in a cooling mattress topper – If the surface of your bed is keeping you up at night, you might need something on the top of your mattress that helps you cool down while you’re going through hot flashes. In this case, you can look into purchasing a cooling mattress topper.
  • Keep your bedroom cool – In general, sleeping in a cooler room is helpful for better sleep, but this is especially true when those hot flashes arise. As such, you’ll want to find ways to keep your bedroom nice and brisk. If it’s cool outside, you can leave the window open. Another option is to use a fan or air conditioning.

Can a cooling blanket help with menopause?

Yes, a cooling blanket could help with menopause. These blankets give you the comfort that comes with a blanket layer, but they’re made with more breathable materials to avoid overheating. Even if you’ve never used a blanket that warms or cools your body before, if you’re experiencing hot flashes, the cost of a cooling blanket is well worth the investment.

What causes night sweats during menopause?

Those sudden hot flashes that leave you drenched in a pool of sweat are often more pronounced at night. The drop in estrogen production that happens during menopause makes it harder for the body to regulate its temperature. When this happens during waking hours, you have more control, and you can take proactive measures to keep cool, like drinking ice water or removing layers of clothing.

However, at night when you’re asleep, your body is on autopilot. Since you’re not taking an active role in regulating your temperature, you might be caught off guard by intense night sweats.

Can menopause cause insomnia?

Yes, menopause can cause insomnia. For example, when you’re going through menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats, you’re more likely to toss and turn or wake up during the middle of the night drenched in sweat. These sleep disruptions make it more difficult to get adequate rest.

Then, the next night, you’re more likely to feel stress, anxiety, and irritability due to the experience you had the night before. The result can result in a cycle of insomnia.
