How We Look for the Best King Size Mattresses
Our diverse team of testers try out every bed we review in the studio. This means hands-on, first-person experience from a variety of sleepers with differing body types, sleeping positions, and overall preferences when it comes to beds. The result is a comprehensive assessment of how the bed feels and performs—not just for us, but for you, dear reader. We summarize our findings in easy-to-understand language, without any of the corporate jargon, to show you the true experience of a mattress.
When it comes to choosing the best king mattresses, we focused on a few categories during our testing and reviews. More on that below.
What We Want to See in the Best King Mattress
During our testing and review process, we noticed that a few things are important to keep in mind when searching for the best king beds:
Good for couples
Chances are, if you’re looking for a king-size mattress, you’re sharing the bed with a partner or pet—or both. We tested beds to see how they perform in categories that are important for couples, such as motion isolation, edge support, and responsiveness.
Value
A king mattress is a big investment, even lower-end options are going to begin at $1,000, at minimum. We made sure these beds all give you the best bang for your buck, so quantity and quality are going hand-in-hand.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best King-Size Mattress Overall
One mark of a true king is the power to choose exactly what you want—and the Saatva Classic delivers on this front. You can customize this bed to suit your preferred firmness and height. No matter how plush or tall your king-size mattress ends up being, though, it’ll contain two innerspring units for unflagging support.
What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?
You can order your Saatva Classic in one of two heights: 11.5 or 14.5 inches. You’ll also be able to choose between Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm models.
- Euro Pillow Top. Gives the Classic its hotel-quality feel, made of soft foam dressed in an organic cotton cover, with firmer quilting in the middle to lift your lumbar spine.
- Lumbar Crown. Stretches across the middle of the bed beneath the pillow top, further boosting the lumbar region. It leads into the first of two innerspring units.
- First Innerspring Unit. Individually wrapped coils are stronger in the middle, where you’re likely putting the most pressure on the bed.
- Spinal Wire. Stretched amongst the springs also prevents sagging and helps keep your back properly aligned
- Second Innerspring Unit. Consists of interconnected coils that permit lots of airflow and should stand up to years of use.
- Foam Rails. Around the edges of the bed, a frame of high-density foam buttresses the sides and keeps them from dipping too low.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Classic has garnered more than 3,000 online reviews on Saatva’s website, and sits at 4.8 out of 5 stars. Negative reviews tend to highlight the fact that it can take a bit of time to get your made-to-order bed delivered. But one-star reviews make up about 1% of the review pool, and most customers love the easy delivery process as well as the mattress’s effectiveness at helping with back pain.

Why the Nectar Earned Best Memory Foam King-Size Mattress
Years after its launch, Nectar’s original memory foam bed remains one of the reigning champions of the online mattress world. Therefore it’s no surprise that we recommend it if you’re looking for an all-foam, king-sized bed.
It’s an affordable option that, despite its lack of springs, finds a rare harmony between softness and support. Its cushiony surface is a special treat for achy joints even as its denser base foam pushes for proper spine alignment.
What’s the Nectar Mattress Made Of?
The Nectar is 12 inches high and has a top and lower cover with three CertiPUR-US® certified foam layers in between.
- Layer 1 – Cover. Features polyethylene fibers that should help prevent overheating.
- Layer 2 – Gel Memory Foam (2 inches). Conforms to your silhouette and cradles sensitive pressure points.
- Layer 3 – Transitional Foam (3 inches). a bit bouncier than the foam above, reducing the risk of a “stuck” feeling as you move around in bed.
- Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Foam (7 inches). Serves as a firm base.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Hybrid King-Size Mattress
Hybrid mattresses are all the rage these days, bypassing all-foam and traditional innerspring beds in popularity. The combination of cozy foams and responsive coils is tough to beat, and if you’re shopping for a king bed, you’ll want a hybrid that plays to the advantages of this larger size.
The Helix Midnight was built with side sleepers in mind, but it’s a great bed for anyone who wants a high-quality, middle-of-the-road feel. Its medium-firm hybrid construction should lend itself well to a variety of sleepers. My fellow tester Loren said the bed is neither too soft or too firm and asserted “there is definitely a sense of overall support.”
What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?
The Helix Midnight is 11.5 inches tall and has six layers, including its top cover.
- Layer 1 – Cover. Made of soft, breathable fabric–but can be swapped for a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover for an additional fee.
- Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. Helix’s proprietary material that offers pressure relief and a soothing amount of give.
- Layer 3, 4 – Helix Response Foam. One cradles, and one is more supportive.
- Layer 5 – Coil Unit. pocketed coils that are stronger on the long edges of the bed.
- Layer 6 – Duradense Foam. Everything is backed up by a sturdy base.
Helix Midnight Mattress Dimensions
Height | Number of Layers | Product Width | Product Length |
11.5″ | 6 | 76″ | 80″ |
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Mattress
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the DreamCloud Premier Earned Best King-Size Mattress for Side Sleepers
The DreamCloud Premier is an extra-luxurious version of one of my favorite mattresses, the DreamCloud. It has some additional padding up top that give it a memorably plush feel, though it doesn’t lose any of the stalwart support from its innerspring unit.
It has a balanced profile to suit side sleepers, who need both pressure relief and spinal alignment. In my opinion, a king-sized version of this bed is bound to make you feel like pampered royalty.
What’s the DreamCloud Premier Made Of?
The DreamCloud Premier is 14 inches high with seven total layers, including its top cover.
- Layer 1 – Cover. Made with a soft cashmere-blend.
- Layer 2 – Quilted Foam. Cushioning gel foam in the Euro top.
- Layer 3 – Quilted Foam. Supportive, firmer foam in the Euro top.
- Layer 4 – Gel Memory Foam. For cooling pressure relief.
- Layer 5 – Transitional Foam. Foam with a slightly firmer feel to assist with spinal alignment.
- Layer 6 – Innerspring Unit. Where pocketed coils allow for cooling airflow and the springs are reinforced along the edges.
- Layer 7 – Base Layer. Stable foam forms the bottom layer of the bed.
- Layer 8 – Bottom Cover. All of the inner layers are contained within a lower cover, which also features handles for intuitive transport.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Cheap King-Size Mattress
As my fellow tester Emma remarked, “the Signature Hybrid mattress is where affordability meets quality.” This king-sized bed can be had for hundreds less than $2,000, making it one of the most affordable king-size mattresses on this list. Our team typifies it as an eminently sensible (if not overly fancy) option.
What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is 11.5 inches tall with five inner layers underneath its cover. You can order it in a Soft, Medium, or Firm feel—the firmness you choose will determine how thick each layer is.
- Layer 1 – Quilted Top. Allows for some cushion while also preventing long-term sagging or body impressions.
- Layer 2 – Comfort Foam. Designed for both pressure-relief and springy responsiveness.
- Layer 3 – VariFlex™ Foam. Adds support and transitions into the bed’s innerspring unit.
- Layer 4 – Innerspring Unit. Coils flex individually in fabric pockets, and reinforced springs along the sides help the edges stay strong.
- Layer 5 – Foam Base. High-density foam acts as a long-lasting foundation.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best King-Size Mattress for Back Pain
If you’re looking for a king-size bed that can help relieve back pain, I’d like to nominate the WinkBed. It has more back-friendly features than most other beds I’ve reviewed, including zoned coils and a specialized foam “LumbarLayer™” that both lend the low back some enhanced support.
What’s more, it’s a mattress with handcrafted touches and an especially durable innerspring unit beneath its softer foams. Testers Sean and Mark both loved how customizable it is, and also complimented its superior craftsmanship.
What’s the WinkBed Made Of?
The WinkBed has four firmness options you can choose from: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus, the last of which is designed for heavier sleepers. Regardless of the feel you pick, it’ll stand around 13.5 inches tall.
- Cover. A Tencel™ cover with breathable fabric made from Eucalyptus wood pulp.
- Euro Pillow Top. Plush foam for cushioning and pressure relief.
- Comfort and Support Layers. Additional foam layers—including a LumbarLayer™ that support the lower back—eventually lead into the innerspring unit.
- Coils. Split into zones that offer increased pressure relief or pushback, depending on where they’re located. Reinforced along the edges to maximize your usable sleep space.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Nolah Evolution Earned Best King-Size Mattress for Couples
At 15 inches tall, a king-size Nolah Evolution cuts a striking figure in any bedroom. Its opulent construction includes seven total layers, plus an upper gusset that encourages heat to leave the mattress. With all of that material, it’s no surprise that it stands up well to the challenges of partnered sleeping.
“This is an excellent mattress for couples,” said our tester Stuart. “You could build your house on Nolah’s edge support.” Another one of our reviewers, Liz, added that these sturdy edges made getting in and out of bed a breeze, even though the mattress is so tall. Stuart also complimented the Evolution’s motion isolation, which should prove advantageous to light sleepers who snooze alongside a loved one.
What’s the Nolah Evolution Made Of?
Listing the materials inside the Nolah Evolution is no easy feat, as this mattress has seven layers (including its top cover) and is 15 inches thick. You can order this mattress in one of three firmness levels: Plush, Luxury Firm, or Firm.
- Layer 1 – Cover. An organic cotton cover with heat-transferring fibers.
- Layer 2 – Pillow Top. A Euro topper quilted with breathable foam and encased by a gusset that further dispels unwanted warmth.
- Layer 3 – AirFoamICE™. Graphite-infused foam reputedly beats memory foam with its capacity for pressure relief, cooling, and standing up to wear and tear.
- Layer 4 – High-Resilience Foam. A firmer foam that supports the softer layer above.
- Layer 5 – Transition Foam. Adds some bounce and responsiveness to the mix.
- Layer 6 – Coil Unit. three regions that provide specialized amounts of pushback to different parts of the body. Thicker coils around the bed’s perimeter lend the mattress its memorable edge support.
- Layer 7 – Base Layer. A robust foundation made from recycled plant fiber.

90 nightsWhat is a King-Size Mattress?
A standard King-size mattress is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. These dimensions make king beds a full 16 inches wider than Queen beds — they give you more than a foot of added lateral space.
Although these are the typical dimensions of a King-size mattress, there are nuances when it comes to the type of King bed you buy.
Types of King Beds
Type of Mattress | Dimensions (inches) |
Standard King | 76″ x 80″ |
California King | 72″ x 84″ |
Wyoming King | 84″ x 84″ |
Texas King | 80″ x 98″ |
Alaskan King | 108″ x 108″ |
Split King | 30″ x 80″ and 30″ x 80″ |
Standard King
A standard King-size mattress measures 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. You may also hear it referred to as an Eastern King. This is the most common incarnation of a King-size bed.
California King
A California King mattress is slightly narrower and longer than a standard King, measuring 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. It’s also known as a Western king, Cali king, or Cal king.
What’s the Difference Between a King and a California King?
A standard King-size mattress is wider than a Californa King, whereas a California King is slightly longer.
So, why you might buy a California King over a King? Certain sleepers — especially tall ones — appreciate the extra length. Its dimensions may also work better with your bedroom setup. The King vs. California King debate is long and storied, with good arguments on either side.
Split King
A Split King mattress is exactly what it sounds like: a King-size bed, split down the middle into two separate sides.
Split Kings are ideal for couples who want to sleep beside one another but have notably different preferences in terms of comfort. For example, maybe you like a soft mattress, but your partner prefers an extremely firm bed. With a split king, you wouldn’t need to compromise.
Often, a split king will be two Twin XL mattresses lined up side by side. This setup works well with a split adjustable base — sleepers not only get the feel they want from their bed, but they can also manipulate the position of each mattress independently. You can also find some Split California Kings, though they’re a bit tougher to find than standard Split Kings.
Other King-Size Mattresses
There are a few more specialized king mattresses that are a bit rarer than the ones we mentioned above, and quite a lot bigger.
The Wyoming King is a square mattress that measures 84 inches by 84 inches, a whopping 7 feet by 7 feet. A Texas King mattress is a rectangle, and it measures 80 inches by 90 inches. It’s essentially 6.5 feet by 8 feet. And finally, the gargantuan of king-size mattresses, the Alaskan King, is 108 inches by 108 inches. That’s a 9 foot by 9 foot square!
These mattresses are harder to find, and naturally much more expensive. But some folks may want the extra space and luxury.
What to Consider in a King-Size Mattress
As the name suggests, King mattresses are large, and they will take up a good bit of space. Therefore, you will want to make sure that your bedroom can accommodate it and any other furniture that you may want to add.
Once you have established that you have a room that can house this substantial piece of furniture, you will want to decide what type of King bed you want. Although there are now a host of super-sized Kings, such as the Texas King and the Alaska King, we are going to concentrate on three of the most popular: King, California King, and Split King.
After you have that narrowed down, you’ll want to consider other important preference-based features.
Type of Mattress
Innerspring Mattresses
Traditional innerspring mattresses can use an interconnected coil system, though more recently, many bed-in-a-box brands now use a pocket coil that keeps the bounce while isolating motion.
Innerspring beds can offer great support, bounce, airflow, and affordability. However, they’re not as great for pressure because they don’t have substantial comfort layers.
Hybrid Mattresses
Hybrid mattresses are a mashup of foam and coils. With upper layers made of foam or latex, sleepers can receive contouring pressure relief, and the durable base layer of coils can allow for better support and easier repositioning.
The coils also provide airflow, which helps keep the mattress cool. Many hybrid bed manufacturers also use gel-infused foam, aeration, and other cooling technologies to provide additional temperature-regulating properties. The construction and materials used in hybrid mattresses can often make them more expensive than other models.
Memory Foam Mattresses
There are a lot of different types of memory foam mattresses out there. Often, these beds have memory foam at the top with firmer poly foam toward the bottom.
Memory foam mattresses can be excellent for pressure relief, support, and motion isolation. They are also a more affordable option. While memory foam has a reputation for trapping heat, many manufacturers now add cooling features to help offset this.
Latex Mattresses
Latex mattresses are made out of latex, which is a type of rubber foam. There are typically two types – Talalay and Dunlop latex. These differ in construction but have a very similar feel and quick responsiveness, gently contouring to sleepers’ bodies and cradling their curves.
Latex is temperature-neutral, durable, and great for pressure relief. In the case of naturally-made latex, it’s also eco-friendly. The main downside to latex, though, is its high price point.
Bedroom Size
A king mattress is a lasting investment but it also takes up quite a bit of space. Since king beds measure (on average) 76 inches by 80 inches, you want to make sure that a royal-sized mattress can fit in your room. Even if it can fit, you might still want to reserve square footage for other furniture, like a bureau or desk.
A good alternative to save space is a queen, which is only a foot or so smaller, and still perfect for couples. Some single folks may even be able to get away with a full-size mattress.
Budget
King beds are one of the largest and most expensive mattresses on the market. Therefore, if you are shopping on a budget you may want to consider smaller sizes. However, if you are set on a King-size mattress, there are more affordable options that can still provide you with a high-quality product. Shopping online can also help you save money on a King-size bed by purchasing directly from the manufacturer.
Trials
Trial periods are helpful when purchasing a new king-size mattress as they can eliminate many of the “what-if”s while providing an “out” if it doesn’t pan out. Most online mattress companies offer a minimum trial period of 100 nights, as that should be enough to “break in” a new bed and see if it works for you. (Some companies might be more generous and offer year-long trials.) During this timeframe, if something doesn’t check out, you can return the bed (usually for free) for a refund or an exchange. This is useful if it’s a small correction you need: like a size or firmness discrepancy.
Returns
Some folks prefer to try before they buy—and when they can’t, they want the option of a free return. Most online mattress brands offer free returns, but some will have you pay a shipping or removal fee (typically around $99) in order to return the bed. If you’re not sure you’ll be completely sold on your king bed, make sure to check the company’s return policy.
Warranties
Warranties refer to the guarantee offered by a mattress manufacturer to either refund or replace parts or the entirety of your mattress in the event of any defects. A warranty is a great way to determine how long a king mattress should last, but it can also provide an extra layer of protection if anything goes wrong.
Ten to 15 years is the average lifespan of a mattress, and it’s also a common warranty length. Some brands are more generous and offer lifetime warranties. If you want a lasting mattress, it’s important to understand the manufacturer’s warranty to get your money’s worth.
How We Test King Size Mattresses
Sleeping Position
How you sleep can influence what will work best for you in a mattress, alongside how a bed feels to you. There are three main sleeping positions: side, back, and stomach—and some folks even rotate through a few, called combination sleepers.
We test mattresses in each of these positions and in a variety of body types, ensuring we get an accurate reading for how a bed will perform. Here’s what we look for when it comes to each sleeping position:
Side sleepers typically like a soft bed that can relieve pressure from their hips and shoulders, as these areas put more pressure into a bed over a smaller surface area.
Back sleepers, on the other hand, usually enjoy something that can help distribute their weight evenly over the surface of the bed. A medium feel often works for these folks as this will fill in the gap between their hips and shoulders without throwing off their alignment.
Stomach sleepers often drift towards a firmer bed. These types of mattresses keep their hips elevated and level with their shoulders. An overly soft bed could cause their hips to dip too low into the mattress.
Combination sleepers need a bed that targets at least several sleeping positions, usually, something with a medium feel and more responsiveness to help them move around.
For more information, see our article on the Best Sleeping Positions.
Weight/Body Type of Sleepers
The dimensions of a King-size bed should work for most body types, but you’ll also need to take your weight and how it will interact with the materials, firmness, and other features into consideration. Many people sleep comfortably on a bed with a medium firmness, but those who are on the lighter side are often more comfortable on softer mattresses as this helps pressure from building up. Meanwhile, heavyweight sleepers will require something with additional support and firmness to help keep their spines aligned.
How do we test body type?
We have testers representing each body type test our mattresses: lightweight (under 130 lbs), average weight (between 130 lbs and 230 lbs), and heavyweight (over 230 lbs). This way, we can get an accurate feel of the mattress for each.
Firmness
The firmness of your mattress is going to affect how you sleep. Something overly soft can leave you feeling stuck in bed, while something too firm can feel like concrete.
Beds are usually categorized as Soft, Medium, or Firm, with some variance in between. Certain brands may use different firmness titles, so reach out if you are unsure. For more info, check out our complete mattress firmness guide.
How do we test firmness?
For firmness, we consider what a mattress company has claimed their bed to feel like, and compare it to our own findings. We see how the bed’s support and pressure relief affects how firm or soft it feels, then we give it a rating from 1 to 10—1 being soft as a cloud and 10 being hard as a rock.
Cooling
The size of a mattress doesn’t necessarily affect its ability to keep you cool, but before making a major purchase like a King-size bed, you will want to consider its temperature-regulating capabilities. This is because staying cool throughout the night is one of the most important factors when it comes to getting restful and restorative sleep.
Memory foam is a popular choice for many consumers because of how it cradles your body, but it has a tendency to sleep hot. Fortunately, many manufacturers have taken note of this issue by infusing gel into the foam. Latex is a cooling material and it can be a good choice when it comes to drawing heat away from your body. Additionally, innerspring and hybrid mattresses’ coil units allow air to flow freely.
How do we test cooling?
We use a temperature gun to figure out a bed’s cooling capability. First, we’ll take the surface temperature of the mattress (which is usually at most 74 degrees Fahrenheit in our studio). Then, a tester lies on the bed for five minutes, and we take the temperature again. After another five minutes, we take the temperature to see how much it has changed (if at all). Usually, a bed that maintains temperature within five degrees is a sign that it can keep cool.
Motion Isolation
Co-sleepers have to not only be concerned about their sleeping preferences but also the movements of their partners. If the nocturnal movements of your spouse, child, or pet are transferred from their sleeping area to yours, it can disturb your sleep.
King-size beds should give you plenty of room to move around, but if your bed doesn’t isolate motion well, the size won’t matter as much. Memory foam and hybrid mattresses both do well at keeping motion from one side of the bed to the other.
How do we test motion isolation?
We use a seismograph app to record movement across the mattress surface. The graphs look like a line with a lot of waves; smaller waves or straight lines mean little to no disturbance, while bigger waves mean bigger, more noticeable movement. We’ll also lie side by side to corroborate our findings.
Pictured above is the seismograph from the Nolah Evolution’s motion isolation test.
Sex
Sexually active people will have an expanse of real estate to utilize during their intimate moments when sleeping on a King-size bed. However, to make the most out of your space, you will want to consider how the mattress’s materials will support your endeavors.
Traditional innerspring mattresses are durable and provide great bounce. However, they may not provide enough cushioning, and they can be noisy. Latex is an excellent choice for sexually active folks as it is extremely responsive and allows for ease of movement, but these beds can be expensive. Hybrids are also helpful for this.
How do we test for sex?
Since a bouncy bed is better for sex, we’ll test out a bed’s responsiveness to determine if it’s good for sex. We bounce both a lacrosse ball and a weighted medicine ball on the bed to see how quickly the surface bounces back. Of course, we also jump on the bed ourselves!
Pressure Relief
Beds that make the aches and pains of the day melt away can bring restorative sleep. That is why pressure relief is important to consider when purchasing your King-size bed.
The contouring yet supportive nature of memory foam and latex offers incredible pressure relief because the foam cradles around your body and keeps pressure from building up. However, if you’re a fan of the durability of innerspring mattresses, you may want to consider a hybrid model. Hybrids provide more cushioning between you and the metal coils than traditional innerspring beds.
How do we test for pressure relief?
We do a pressure map test for each bed we try. This map is color coded to show in what areas of the body there’s increased pressure buildup: blue and green means less pressure, while red and yellow means more pressure. We have testers of each body type lie on their back and side to get an accurate reading for each position.
Edge Support
How well-supported you are around the perimeter of your bed may not be a major consideration when choosing your new King-size mattress. However, even in a large bed, good edge support is beneficial, particularly to co-sleepers and those with mobility issues.
Co-sleepers will be able to use the entire bed without feeling that they are falling out of it. Reinforced edges can give those with mobility issues a solid base to get in and out of bed. Memory foam and latex mattresses can be designed with sturdier foams around the edges, whereas innerspring and hybrid beds typically have exemplary edge support by extending their coils or putting stronger ones around the outside of the bed.
How do we test edge support?
We test out edge support in two positions: one of our testers sits on the edge and ties their shoes, then they lie on the edge for about a minute. Then, they’ll record how much sinking or slipping they feel or see.
Durability
All mattresses have a lifespan, and it can be annoying to deal with a mattress that starts sagging long before its warranty is up. If you want a durable king mattress, you’re going to need to find a bed that’s made of high quality, durable materials. We generally recommend beds with coils over those with foam, since foam can sag more egregiously.
Related: Best Mattress That Won’t Sag
How do we test durability?
During testing, we take into account what we’ve learned from observing the bed’s performance, its construction, and the quality to form an opinion about how long it’ll last. Most mattresses have a lifespan of about 10 years, and if we think that a bed is built to last longer than that, we’ll let you know.
Should I Buy a King or Queen Size Mattress?
Some shoppers may struggle between choosing a king or queen mattress, as the price difference (depending on the brand) can be anywhere from a couple hundred bucks to a thousand dollars.
There are generally two things to consider if you’re waffling between a king- and queen-size bed, the first is space, and the second is price.
When we say space, we mean both the mattress space and the space you have in your room. If you have a smaller bedroom, a queen bed may give you more square footage to fill with other furniture. If you have a partner, you’ll still have room on a queen mattress, but it’ll be snugger than a king. And if you’re a single person, a queen-size mattress may feel too empty.
For price, sometimes a queen can save you up to one thousand dollars, depending on which bed you’re buying. If price is important to you, you may want to size down to a queen, but if you have the extra cash, splurging on a king can give you a truly royal sleep experience.
Who Should Buy a King Mattress?
- Couples. The best part about a king mattress is the amount of space you’re getting. Couples who want to have their own sides of the bed may prefer the added inches a king offers.
- Pet owners. In the same vein, folks who allow their pets into the bed may want the extra space to ensure everyone’s comfortable and there’s no squishing.
- People with large bedrooms. One drawback of a king-size bed is that it can take up a lot of space. If you have a fairly big bedroom, though, a king might be the perfect fit. Sometimes, a queen or full can look too small in larger rooms.
- Shoppers looking for a long-term bed. Since a king bed is an investment, it’s important to consider if this is going to be the mattress that stays with you for a long time. For example, if you plan on moving soon, a king sized mattress may be difficult to transport or fit into your new home.

King-Size Mattress FAQs
How big is a King-size mattress?
A standard King-size mattress is 76 inches in width by 80 inches in length. This means that while many people should fit comfortably on this bed, those who are over 6 feet tall may want to ensure that this bed will give them enough room to stretch out if they choose. California King-size beds provide 4 more inches in length, but their width is 4 inches shorter.
How much does a King-size bed cost?
When purchasing a King-size mattress, you can expect to pay at least around 1,500 to 2,000 dollars for a quality product. That said, there’s a lot of variability in price depending on what you’re looking for in your bed.
When considering the cost of a King-size mattress, you’ll want to weigh your budget against what features are most important to you. Certain luxury models can cost more than 5,000 dollars Hybrids and latex beds also tend to be more expensive than foam and innerspring beds.
Are there any cheap King-size beds?
King-size mattresses are typically more expensive, so a less expensive model could present huge savings. There are cheaper models out there, but be careful that you are not confusing “cheap” with “affordable.” So you can get the most out of your money, research different brands and materials. That way, you’re sure to find the best budget mattress.
Is a King-size mattress worth the money?
Yes and no; some beds are going to be far more expensive than other brands that sell similar or identical beds. Again, this is where it is important to compare brands to make sure you are getting a fair deal. There are plenty of good King-size mattresses out there that are worth the price tag.
Should I use a King-size mattress topper?
If you are buying a new bed, you may as well buy it right the first time and get what you are looking for in a mattress and not spend additional money on a topper. If you currently have a King mattress and think it needs just a slight adjustment, a quality mattress topper could be a good way to get the feel you want.
Is a King-size mattress better than a Queen-size mattress?
The answer to this question depends on your unique circumstances. A queen mattress is big enough to fit two people comfortably, or for one person to spread out. A king is a bit bigger (about a foot of extra square footage) and can allow for extra space for couples who might need it, such as those of a larger size or weight. Both have their pros and cons, but it ultimately comes down to what you’re looking for, alongside your available budget and space.
