Who I’d Recommend the Original Casper For

  • People with joint pain – Those dealing with joint pain should appreciate the pressure relief of this memory foam mattress, which contours the body and gives that “hug” sensation that memory foam is known for.

  • Hot sleepers – Memory foam beds can trap heat, but because this one has a top layer of perforated foam, it should be more breathable than other all-foam options.

  • Sensitive sleepers – People who sleep with a partner could benefit from this all-foam bed’s excellent motion isolation. This means if your partner moves at night, there’s less of a chance you’ll feel anything.

Who I’d Recommend the Casper Hybrid For

  • Those who want more bounce – Since this mattress has both foam layers and a support layer of coils, it will be a bit more supportive and a lot bouncier than the all-foam options.

  • Combination sleepers – With the added bounce, this mattress can make it easier to change positions throughout the night.

  • People with back pain – The Casper Hybrid includes zoned support, meaning it is firmer around the hips, lower back, and stomach, while being softer around the shoulders.

Who I’d Recommend the Casper Nova Hybrid For

  • Hot sleepers – The Casper Nova Hybrid contains several features that could be advantageous for hot sleepers, such as proprietary Airscape™ foam and coils.

  • Affordable luxury shoppers – Shoppers who want luxury at a competitive price will appreciate the high-end elements of this mattress, including the eco-friendly cover, zoned support for the back, and a cloud-like feel.

  • Partners who prefer a soft bed – This bed has a rare combination of both good bounce and motion isolation. For couples who love a softer bed, this should help them sleep soundly and have more ease in changing positions.

Who I’d Recommend the Casper Wave Hybrid For

  • People who need advanced back support – This mattress has even more advanced zoned support than other Casper models, making it an excellent choice for those with back pain or who need help keeping their spines properly aligned.

  • Combination sleepers – This mattress is an excellent fit for back, side, and stomach sleepers. It is also bouncy and responsive enough to make changing positions easier.

  • Luxury shoppers – This mattress comes with luxury features like increased spinal support, advanced cooling technology, and more layers of supportive and pressure-relieving foam. This makes it the most expensive Casper on this list.

Comparing the Casper Models: Top Similarities

  • They’re all medium-firm – All of these mattresses rate somewhere between a 5 and a 6.5 on our mattress firmness scale, making them medium-firm beds. As a result, these beds are suitable for most sleepers.
  • They work for side sleepers – While some of these mattresses might be too soft to support some back sleepers, they should all work well for side sleepers.
  • They are cooling – All Casper mattresses feature AirScape™ foam with thousands of perforations to help keep you cool at night.

Comparing the Casper Models: Key Differences

  • Materials – The Casper Original is an all-foam bed, making it more contouring and “hug-like,” whereas the Hybrid, Nova Hybrid, and Wave Hybrid all include an innerspring layer in addition to foam, making them bouncier.
  • Price – There is a significant difference in cost between the Casper Original (the least expensive on this list) and the more advanced Wave Hybrid.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

Mattress firmness reflects how soft or firm the bed feels, which we rate on a 1 through 10 scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest. In this group of Casper mattresses, the Nova Hybrid is the softest at a 5 out of 10. The rest of the mattresses all have similar firmness levels, rating at around a 6 out of 10, making them medium-firm mattresses.

Even though they have similar firmness levels, they will feel different based on their construction.

Support

The Casper Original, Hybrid, Nova Hybrid, and Wave Hybrid all have zoned support, which means they are more supportive beneath the lower back and hips. While this can be beneficial to many people, it doesn’t mean each of these beds will be supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers.

The Wave Hybrid will offer the most advanced support of them all and rates better for heavier sleepers. However, heavyweight stomach sleepers could still prefer something firmer than a Casper bed to ensure their hips remain lifted.

Feel

The Casper Original is the only all-foam mattress on this list, and it will have that traditional, memory foam “sinking in” feel. It also won’t have any bounce and won’t feel quite as cooling as the other mattresses.

The rest of the mattresses are hybrids and will feel bouncier, more supportive, and breathable. The Wave Hybrid will feel the bounciest because of the latex, and the Nova Hybrid stands out in that it has a plush top layer, making it quite soft.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

Generally, memory foam mattresses provide more sinkage, whereas mattresses that include coils have more bounce. If a mattress also contains latex, a naturally buoyant material, it will have even more bounce.

The Casper Original has the most sinkage, as it’s made of only foam. That said, you shouldn’t sink in so much you’ll feel “stuck” in the mattress, though heavyweight sleepers could experience too much sinkage.

The three hybrid models include a layer of coils, giving them that extra bounce. The Wave Hybrid also includes a layer of latex, making it the bounciest of the mattresses.

Comparing Motion Transfer

Motion transfer describes the amount of movement you’ll feel if somebody is moving on another part of the mattress. Having a limited amount of motion transfer is important for those who share a bed, especially for sensitive sleepers.

In general, Casper does a great job of keeping motion isolated. The two all-foam mattresses have limited motion transfer, as you’d expect from mattresses without any springs. However, Casper’s hybrid mattresses also have limited motion transfer. This combination of bounce and limited motion transfer makes the three hybrids excellent beds for couples, both for sleep and intimacy.

Comparing Cooling

All of Casper’s mattresses take cooling into consideration since they all use their proprietary AirScape™ foam at the top. This foam is perforated to increase airflow and keep you cool at night.

However, the hybrid mattresses are going to be even more cooling, because in addition to the perforated foam, they have a layer of coils, which increases airflow.

The Casper Wave Hybrid takes this one step further, though, including an additional layer of cooling gel at the top, as well as a layer of latex beneath that. Latex is a naturally cooling material.

Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)

Casper Original Construction

All Casper mattresses are bed-in-a-box products, which means they will ship to you in a box. They will take about 48 hours to decompress and off-gas. Once the original Casper decompresses, it will measure 11 inches tall. Its cover is made from a durable polyester fabric encasing each of the layers.

  • The first foam layer is made from Casper’s AirScape™ foam. It is perforated, giving the mattress more breathability and temperature control.
  • The middle foam layer is 2 inches of Zoned Support™, a firmer transition foam. This foam is denser beneath the hips and softer around the shoulders, to promote proper spinal alignment.
  • The base layer is a unit of dense foam that lends durability, provides support, and creates the overall foundation of the Casper mattress.

All the foams in the Casper Original are CertiPUR-US® certified to ensure you’re getting a quality and safe product. This is true of the additional Casper beds as well.

Casper Hybrid Construction

The Casper Hybrid is also 11 inches tall once it decompresses fully. The cover is made from a polyester blend, and beneath the cover are two layers of foam and a coil base.

  • The first layer is made from AirScape™ foam; perforated to increase airflow. It is also contouring to relieve pressure and conform to your body, but it’s not so soft that you’ll feel “stuck” in the mattress.
  • The middle layer is a Zoned Support™ memory foam that features three zones to optimize spinal alignment. As such, it’s softer underneath the shoulders and firmer under the hips, waist, and lower back.
  • The base of this bed is a foundation of durable pocket coil springs that provide edge-to-edge support and more bounce than an all-foam mattress. These coils are surrounded by foam to provide edge-to-edge stability, allowing you to use the entire surface of the bed without sinking.

Casper Nova Hybrid Construction

The Nova Hybrid includes more layers, so it stands slightly taller at 12 inches high once it has decompressed. Like the other models, it uses a polyester cover and all foams in its construction are CertiPUR-US® certified.

  • The first layer is a top layer of puff fabric that cradles the body and gives this mattress a much more plush and “cloud-like” feel. This layer is also perforated to keep you cool.
  • Next, is a zoned support layer. This layer, which is also aerated to keep you cool, is designed to keep your spine in proper alignment.
  • The third layer is what makes this bed unique. It’s an additional layer of contoured memory foam with seven support zones for enhanced spinal support.
  • Finally, the bottom layer features durable, steel coils with a firm foam border to provide excellent edge support. This bottom layer makes the bed bouncy and even more breathable.

Casper Wave Hybrid Construction

The Casper Wave Hybrid is the most luxurious of these models, and it also has the most layers. This also makes it the tallest of these beds, measuring 13 inches tall once it’s fully decompressed after unboxing.

  • The first layer is made from Casper’s perforated AirScape™ foam. This layer also includes a cooling gel to keep you even cooler at night.
  • The second layer is an additional 1.5 inches of perforated AirScape™ latex foam. The latex will be slightly firmer and bouncier than the topmost layer.
  • The middle layer is the first of two Zoned Support layers. This memory foam layer includes three areas of Zoned Support™ Max.
  • The fourth layer is another Zoned Support layer, including 1.5 inches of poly foam. This layer also includes gel pods underneath the waist and lower back.
  • The base layer is a 7-inch foundation of durable pocket coil springs, surrounded by a firm foam encasement for excellent edge support.

Final Thoughts

Casper has been making quality mattresses for nearly a decade, and if you’re looking for your next mattress, it might be tempting to ask, “Which is the best?”

The answer to this is complex. It depends on your budget, your preference between cushioning and bounce, and other factors like what position you sleep in.

For example, if you want a softer mattress and you have a higher budget, the Casper Nova Hybrid is the best. If you want a memory foam bed and cost is a factor, the Casper Original is ideal.

Whatever you decide, any of these Casper mattresses will be a high-quality choice from a reputable company.
