Who We Recommend The Sleep Number 360° i8 For:
- Hot sleepers – Air beds are known for sleeping cooler than all-foam models, but this mattress also has a breathable and cooling Smart 3D fabric cover, which is 50 percent more breathable than many other covers.
- Back sleepers – While its adjustable firmness makes it incredibly versatile, back sleepers in particular report sleeping well on the i8, as it offers a great balance of plushness and support.
- Couples – Many couples could love the cooling technology, great motion isolation, good edge support, and the ability to customize firmness on each side of the bed.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Sleep Number 360° i8 For:
- Budget shoppers – Technology doesn’t come cheap, and at 3,899 dollars for a Queen, the i8 won’t be within everyone’s budget. Shoppers needing a cheaper option should check out our picks for the best affordable mattresses.
- People who like the feel of a traditional bed – Sleep Number beds aren’t for everyone. Despite the 6-inch comfort layer, this still won’t feel like a mega plush memory foam or super responsive hybrid mattress due to the air support system, which can take some getting used to.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: Adjustable
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
We rate mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest. However, we did not give Sleep Number 360° i8 a specific firmness rating, as it offers a choice of 20 firmness levels.
The air chambers inflate or deflate according to the Sleep Number, and beds in Full size and up feature two air chambers, which can be individually customized according to the sleeper’s needs. This is one of Sleep Number’s plusher beds, so while it’s suitable for many, some heavyweight sleepers may find it too plush, even on a lower firmness setting.
How Does It Feel?
The Sleep Number 360° i8 starts with a soft, breathable poly-blend Smart 3D fabric cover, which feels cool to the touch. Lying down on the bed, you’ll feel the seven-zoned comfort foam gently cradling your body from head to toe, while the plush quilted pillow top offers a cozy feel. While you can decrease the firmness to slightly increase bounce, be aware that this bed still isn’t very bouncy — if that’s important to you.
What We Like About the Sleep Number 360° i8
- Sleep tracking technology – Pressure sensors in the mattress measure biometrics like heart rate, breathing rate, and movement to assess how well you’re sleeping. They provide these details through the SleepIQ® app, which offers a Sleep Score every time you wake.
- Responsive Air® technology – Change positions a lot in the night? Turn on Responsive Air® technology, and the bed will adjust firmness hourly while you sleep, based on your movements.
- Great pressure relief – The i8 was made with pressure relief in mind, with its cozy pillow top and soft PlushFit foam that features seven zones of contouring to keep you comfortably cradled from head to toe.
Our Sleep Number 360° i8 Complaints
- Reported breakdowns – Some customers have reported multiple issues with the hose or pump breaking, the bed losing air, and the SleepIQ® technology not working. On top of this, people have mentioned customer service not being very responsive.
- Very limited warranty – The warranty only covers the full cost of repair in the first year. After that, a percentage of the cost must be covered by the consumer, and this percentage increases every year, which could prove costly if the bed keeps breaking.
- Lack of bounce – The i8 has many great features, but bounce isn’t one of them. Any springiness that could come from the air chambers is muffled by the thick comfort layer, which could pose issues for combination sleepers, those with limited mobility, and couples seeking a bouncy mattress for sex.
Testing the Sleep Number 360° i8 Mattress: How it Performed
When testing a mattress, we assess multiple features that are valuable to consumers, such as support, edge support, bounce, cooling, pressure relief, and motion isolation. Additionally, we test out the bed in multiple sleep postures, including on the back, side, and stomach.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
Sleep Number beds support a maximum of 400 pounds on each air chamber, which means the Twin XL can handle 400 pounds total, and Full and above can manage 800 pounds total.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should experience fantastic contouring and pressure relief on the i8, thanks to its zoned support, adjustable firmness, and 6-inch comfort layer.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should sink far enough into the comfort foam to find comfortable pressure relief while still feeling supported by the air chambers.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – This bed could work well for many heavyweight side sleepers, but since this is one of Sleep Number’s softer beds, some heavier people may find themselves sinking too far into the comfort foam, causing a buildup of pressure.
Explore the Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers tend to experience mattresses as firmer than those who weigh more, so lighter back sleepers should be able to find a firmness level that provides great support, along with excellent pressure relief.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers will make the most of the seven-zoned comfort foam that will support their entire body while soothing sensitive joints.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Most heavyweight back sleepers should feel well supported on a higher Sleep Number setting, although those who prefer a firm mattress for back sleeping might be put off by the plush comfort layer.
Browse the Best Mattresses for Back Sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – We think lightweight stomach sleepers will be able to make the most of the seven contouring zones, which should ensure they’re well-supported and comfortably cushioned at the hips, chest, and shoulders.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers should be able to find a firm Sleep Number setting that provides plenty of support while the comfort layer offers soothing pressure relief.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – We think many heavyweight front sleepers could find enough support from a high Sleep Number setting, although some may find themselves bottoming out into the thick comfort foam, which could cause lower back pain over time.
Discover the Best Mattresses for Stomach Sleepers.
Pressure Relief & Pain
The Sleep Number 360° i8 is designed for exceptional pressure relief, with its seven-zoned comfort foam offering gentle cradling at the head, shoulders, lower back, hips, knee, lower legs, and feet. This should leave most sleepers feeling comfortably cushioned, although some heavier individuals may actually find a buildup of pressure at key areas like the hips and shoulders if they bottom out and sink too deeply into the foam.
Back Pain – Most sleepers with back pain should be incredibly comfortable on this plush yet supportive mattress, although some heavier sleepers may not find the bed supportive enough – particularly when sleeping on the front – which could worsen lower back pain.
Find more mattresses for back pain.
Hip Pain – Those with sensitivity at the hips should experience great pressure relief from the comfort layer on the i8, but heavier sleepers might find their hips sinking into the air chamber, which could increase pressure in that area.
Shoulder Pain – This plush mattress is a great choice for most side sleepers, featuring extra contouring in that area for pressure relief. However, some heavier side sleepers may find themselves sagging into the foam, causing excess pressure on the shoulders.

Support
The Sleep Number 360° i8 offers great support for most sleepers, thanks to its adjustable air support system and seven-zoned comfort foam. The zones offer body contouring from head to feet, gently cradling you while keeping your spine in its correct alignment, which should suit most back, side, and stomach sleepers.
However, as this is one of Sleep Number’s softer beds (due to the thicker comfort layer), some heavyweight sleepers may find it doesn’t offer adequate support, even on the highest Sleep Number setting. This could lead to them bottoming out in the foam.
Motion Transfer
A bed with good motion isolation is essential for people who share their bed with a partner or pet and tend to wake up easily, as it means that any movement is kept to that side of the bed. Sleep Number beds designed for two people feature two air chambers, which makes for great motion isolation, and the i8 has a thick comfort layer, which further minimizes motion transfer.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
The i8 features a Smart 3D cover that’s 50 percent more breathable than other covers, helping to keep you cool.
On top of this, air beds are known for sleeping cooler than all-foam mattresses, so this could be a great option if you tend to sleep hot or live in a warm climate.
Performance for Couples
Couples with differing firmness preferences may struggle to agree on a mattress, but with the i8’s dual air chambers allowing you to customize firmness on both sides of the bed, that shouldn’t be an issue. The mattress has great cooling and motion isolation, as well as good edge support, but it lacks bounce, which could be an issue for couples sharing a bed who something responsive for sex. Couples who like to cuddle in the center could also struggle with a gap that often appears between the two air chambers.

Preference-based Features
Adjustable Firmness
Not only do you have a choice of 20 firmness levels for each air chamber, but the Responsive Air® technology will even adjust firmness hourly throughout the night through sensors that respond to your sleeping position.
Smart Technology
As well as automatically adjusting firmness, the sensors measure biometrics and deliver the data to the SleepIQ® app to give you insights into your sleep quality. The app even offers tips on how to get better sleep according to your data.
Good Edge Support
Despite its plush comfort layer, the i8 offers good edge support, thanks to a high-density foam wall perimeter that’s built into the mattress. This is great news for couples that like to spread out and people with limited mobility who need extra security when getting in and out of bed.
Adjustable Base Compatible
The Sleep Number 360° i8 can be used with an existing adjustable base, although Sleep Number sells three versions of its own FlexFit™ Smart Base. These bases are non-refundable and are not included in the 100-night trial.
Browse our picks of the best adjustable bases.
Construction: What’s Inside Sleep Number 360° i8?

The bed has a 6-inch comfort layer, consisting of a pillow top and a layer of comfort foam.

- PlushFit Foam makes up the rest of the comfort layer, featuring seven zones that are designed to contour the entire body, offering soothing pressure relief.
- The support system features 24-gauge vulcanized rubber air chambers, with one chamber in Twin XL size and two chambers in Full size and above. The bed’s firmness is programmed through the remote control or SleepIQ® app, and a hose and pump system is used to inflate or deflate the air chamber(s). Additionally, foam perimeter walls offer edge support.
- The base layer features 1 inch of high-density foam to give the air support something to bounce off.
The bed is also equipped with sensors that record biometrics to assess sleep quality and adjust firmness automatically via Responsive Air® technology. This bed requires an electrical source within five feet, as well as a wifi connection to make use of the SleepIQ® technology. If your wifi fails, the bed can be controlled via Bluetooth.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Worried about setting up this high-tech bed? Don’t be – Sleep Number smart beds must be delivered using their premium home delivery service, which includes the setup of your new bed and a demonstration of how to use it.
As with all beds containing foam, there could be a slight off-gassing odor. However, the odor is harmless and is caused by chemical byproducts in foam escaping after being trapped in packaging.

- Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a 360® Sleep Number cost?
The most affordable Sleep Number beds are in the Classic range, with the cheapest being the Sleep Number 360® c2, at 1,099 dollars for a Queen. The most expensive mattress-only 360® beds are in the Innovation range, with the i10 and iLE both costing 5,399 dollars for a Queen.
Does the Sleep Number 360® i8 have cooling?
Air beds naturally sleep rather cool, but the i8 also features Smart3D fabric in the cover, which feels cool to the touch and is 50 percent more breathable than many other covers, helping to dissipate body heat.
How deep is the Sleep Number 360® i8?
The i8 is 12 inches deep, with a 6-inch comfort layer.
Is a higher Sleep Number softer?
If you’re talking about the Sleep Number firmness setting, then a higher number means a firmer feel. If you’re referring to the names of the beds, then a higher number means a softer bed, as beds with higher numbers feature thicker comfort layers. So, for example, the Sleep Number 360® i10 will feel much softer than the Sleep Number 360® c2, as it has a 7-inch comfort layer compared to the c2’s 2-inch comfort layer.

Overall Summary
The Sleep Number 360° i8 is a pretty versatile choice for those looking for a smart air bed, and we think light to average-weight sleepers will get the most from it.
Side Sleepers
4/5
This bed features a thick 6-inch comfort layer that’s designed for pressure relief, so could be perfect for side sleepers, with the seven-zoned contouring foam cradling their entire body and soothing the hips. That being said, some heavier side sleepers may experience too much sinkage, which could cause a buildup of pressure at the hips and shoulders.
Back Sleepers
4/5
Most back sleepers should find this bed a treat, with its plush comfort layer offering pleasant cushioning, while the seven-zoned contouring provides lumbar support. However, heavier sleepers who love a firm bed for back sleeping may find that this softer Sleep Number model doesn’t offer adequate firmness, even at its highest setting.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
Although this is one of Sleep Number’s softer beds, the seven-zoned contouring and adjustable firmness could still make it suitable for most stomach sleepers, who should feel well-supported and cushioned. Having said this, some heavier front sleepers may find their hips sagging into the thick comfort foam, causing misalignment of the spine.
Combination Sleepers
4/5
This bed is particularly suitable for light to average-weight sleepers who switch positions during the night, especially as Responsive Air® technology allows for automatic firmness adjustment while you sleep. However, with its thick comfort layer, it doesn’t offer much bounce, which could make changing positions a little difficult.
Couples
4/5
The i8 suits a wide range of sleepers, with DualAir technology letting you customize the firmness on each side of the bed. It has great cooling, motion isolation, and edge support, but it doesn’t offer much bounce for intimacy. Customers have also reported a gap between the two air chambers, which may make cuddling in the center uncomfortable.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
We think many heavier sleepers could feel comfortable on the i8, although some stomach and back sleepers could find the comfort layer too plush to offer the required support, even on the highest Sleep Number setting. Some side sleepers could also find themselves sinking too far into the foam, causing a buildup of pressure at the shoulders and hips.
Lightweight Sleepers
5/5
We think lightweight sleepers could find this mattress incredibly comfortable in all sleep positions, thanks to its plush pressure-relieving foam and adjustable firmness. Side sleepers, in particular, could appreciate the soft, quilted pillow top and contouring foam, proving cozy pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Sleepers
5/5
Average-weight sleepers should be able to find great comfort on the i8, no matter their sleeping position. It might be one of Sleep Number’s softer models, but the ability to adjust firmness should mean most sleepers are able to find a setting that provides good support and gentle cradling.
Overall Value
3/5
The i8 packs in a lot of technology, but it’s expensive and may not be the most durable, with some customers complaining of malfunctions. The warranty is also rather limited, which could cost you in the long run if things do go wrong.
Our Verdict
If plush pressure relief, 20 levels of adjustable firmness, and sleep-tracking technology excite you, then the Sleep Number 360° i8 could well be the bed for you. Light to average-weight sleepers should find this a dream, and we would recommend it for these sleepers.
While there are customer reviews complaining of these beds breaking, there are just as many saying they’ve had the best night’s sleep of their lives, so if this bed has caught your attention, make the most of the 100-night trial to see if you like it.
